Here is what appeared in Jack Higgins’ editorial cartoon in the Chicago Sun-Times yesterday.

I don’t have a key for a lightning bolt or a cent sign, but the rest is

Cartoon Network Obama

January 25, 2009 By: Cal Skinner Category: Barack Obama, Cartoon, Cartoon Network, Inauguration Day

“Hey, Dad. Barack Obama’s on Cartoon Network.”

I ran in with my camera, but missed it.

“Don’t worry. It’ll be on again. Obama is on between every program.”

“Call me the next time,” I said.

It was Inauguration Day and between every program this was what our kids saw.

The Senate Democrats’ Racism Problem

January 06, 2009 By: Cal Skinner Category: Backyard Conservative, Cartoon, Day by Day, Racism, Roland Burris, U.S. Senate

Maybe I overestimated the amount of pressure that it would take for blacks to get white U.S. Senate Democrats to seat Illinois Roland Burris.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid hinted at a deal on Sunday.

Look at this cartoon from

only one panel of which you see here.

Thanks to “Backyard Conservative” for leading me to it.

Northwest Herald "Rubes" Cartoon Cutback Roils Cartoon Readers

September 01, 2008 By: Cal Skinner Category: Cartoon, Cartoonist, Leign Rubin, Northwest Herald, Rube

The Northwest Herald has decided to drop Rubes, one of its more popular cartoons.

The cartoon has no central character so it relies on the strength of its humor each day,” cartoonist Leigh Ruibin says. “For me that is the great challenge and the most fun. Rubes is populated with an ever changing cast of characters whose sole mission is to bring a smile each day to readers around the country.”

I looked at some http://www.creators.com/comics/rubes.html?comicname=rub of them and found I really related to this one.

It’s about a coin-operated machine.

I have called them “money grabbers” whenever my son asks for a coin.

And the answer is always,

“You know I don’t spend money on ‘money grabbers.’”

Cartoonist Leigh Rubin captures my feelings so well with this cartoon of a money grabber offering a big sucker, a sucker too big to get out of the machine.

The cut line is

“In time, Benny would learn to appreciate irony.”

Indeed.

So, what should you do if you want to try to change the minds of the decision-makers at the Northwest Herald?

You could call decision-makers like Senior Managing Editor Dan McCaleb’s at 815-459-4040 ext.4603. McCaleb’s email address is dmccaleb@nwherald.com.

Managing Editor Chris Krug’s email address is ckrug@nwherald.com. His phone number is 815-459-4122.
