Crystal Lake Middle School Fight Club?

March 19, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Crystal Lake, Crystal Lake Grade School District, Crystal Lake Grade School District 47, District 47, Fight Club, Lundalh Junior High School

That’s what sprang to mind about noon as I was listening to the robo-call from Crystal Lake Grade School Director of Communications Lori Parish.

Read what she said and see if you come to a similar conclusion:

“School administrators have been contacted by Crystal Lake authorities and notified that some middle school students have been engaging in off campus fighting.

Lundahl Middle School serves junior high school students on Crystal Lake's south side.

“We are cooperating fully with the Police Department as they investigate these incidents.

“While the events have occurred outside of school property, the school environment has been disrupted.

“The information is the majority of the students involved in the fighting reside in the south end of town.

“However, we have information that leads us to believe that students form the other D47 middle schools may have been involved.

“It is our expectation that this behavior will stop immediately.

“Fighting can be considered mob action and is punished as a felony.

“The police will determine what, if any, charges may be filed based on the outcome of their investigation.

“Please talk with your child of the inappropriateness of this type of behavior.”

Most children on the south side of town attend Lundahl Middle School.

Crystal Lake Has More Men Looking for Grade School Kids – License Plate of Older Black Car has 646 on It

February 17, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Child Abduction, Coventry, Coventry Elementary School, Crystal Lake, Crystal Lake Grade School District, Crystal Lake Grade School District 47, District 47

Last week, parents and personnel at West Grade School in Crystal Lake had a scare when a guy tried to talk a nine-year old girl into getting into his car.

Yesterday after school, a similar event occurred.

At 11:24 this District 47 parent got another call from Lori Parrish, the school district’s Director of Communications.

The “important message,” also translated into Spanish, follows:

“On Tuesday, February 16th, 2010, at approximately 3:50 a student of Coventry Elementary School was approached in the area of Birkshire Drive near Coventry Lane, Crystal Lake, by two unidentified male subjects driving what was described as a black 2-door older model vehicle with a boxy back and a partial license plate of 646.

“The subjects within the vehicle attempted to engage the child in a conversation; however, the child ran away, notified a parent and was not pursued by the suspicious vehicle.

“Children are reminded not to approach individuals they do not know and report suspicious activity to their parents, school faculty and/or police.

“This matter remains under investigation by the Crystal Lake Police Department.

“Thank you.”

West School Child Abduction Attempt Report

February 11, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Briarwood, Child Abduction, Crystal Lake, Crystal Lake Grade School District, Crystal Lake Grade School District 47, Crystal Lake Police, Kidnap, McHenry County Sheriff, McHenry County Sheriff's Department, North Avenue, West Elementary School, West School

West Elementary School, Crystal Lake, Illinois

Parents of District 47 children are receiving phone calls about an attempted abduction of a 9-year old girl at the corner of Briarwood and North Avenue on the west end of Crystal Lake.

The girl was walking to school when a 20-40 year old male with tan skin and dark brown hair asked her if she wanted a ride to school.

She said, “No,” and ran down the street several blocks to West Elementary School.

The intersection of Briarwood and North Avenue long after the 13 police officers, mainly Sheriff's Deputies, had left.

The man, driving a tan 4-door sedan, was described as wearing as clean shaven and wearing not glasses or jewelry.

The abduction attempt occurred between 8:35 and 8:47 AM.

Lori Parrish, the Crystal Lake Grade School Communications Director, made the phone call. She asked that parents discuss with their children the problem of “stranger danger.”

No wonder so many parents insist on driving their children to and from school.

Apparently, the crime took place outside of Crystal Lake’s city limits, because the Crystal Lake Police Department is reporting that the McHenry County Sheriff’s Department has primary jurisdiction.

When I took the photos I measured the distance from North Avenue to the school.  It was two-tenths of a mile.

Who’s Gong to Win?

February 02, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Crystal Lake Grade School District, Crystal Lake Grade School District 47, Crystal Lake Park District, Lundalh Junior High School, Sign

Although the Crystal Lake Park Board won't allow signs on park district property in front of a polling place on election day, Crystal Lake's Grade School District 47 seemed to have no problem with the concept today at Lundahl Junior High School.

A loyal reader wonders I haven’t asked who the most politically intelligent residents in McHenry County think is going to win the election.

So, here goes.

In the comment section, list who you think will win for governor and senator in both parties (OK, the GOP pick is a give away), 8th District GOP congressional nomination, McHenry County Sheriff and county board for each district on which you care to speculate.

Go at it.

Dave Jenkins, Please Call Your Former Employer

January 04, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Crystal Lake Grade School District, Crystal Lake Grade School District 47, Dave Jenkins, District 47, Huntley School District 158, email

Former Huntley School District 158 Technology Officer and, then, Chief Operating Officer Dave Jenkins recently went to work for Crystal Lake’s Grade School District 47.

Looking at the front page announcement on the Huntley School District’s web page makes me wond4er if Jenkins has gotten a phone call from his previous employer.

Administrators Leaving Huntley School District

Ferrier, Tersa looking left head shotFirst it was Teresa Ferrier. She was the Fiscal Services Director at Huntley’s District 158 until she was hired by Cary Grade School District 26 in mid-June of this year. T. Ferrier (as she likes to be known) started July 1st. Her base salary is $98,000, plus Teachers Retirement System and insurance benefits.

Jenkins on far left of 8-3-9 bd meeting video

Dave Jenkins is on far left of this Sept. 3rd board meeting video.

Now I am informed by Crystal Lake Grade School District 47 Chief Financial Officer Susan Shepard that Huntley’s Chief Operations Officer David Jenkins has been hired to be 47’s Director of Technology, the field from which he was came. His salary is also $98,000 a year. Stewart, Glenn looking leftJenkins was chosen by Huntley Superintendent John Burkey when Chief Operations Officer Glen Stewart unexpectedly resigned. There’s a board meeting on Thursday, but I can’t find anything about Jenkins’ leaving in the board packet’s personnel report…yet. And no one can blame Larry Snow for being the reason these two top administrators resigned, since he left the Huntley school board in May.

Barack Obama Will Not Have Captive Audience in Huntley Schools

September 04, 2009 By: Cal Skinner Category: Barack Obama, Captive Audience, Crystal Lake Grade School District 47, Huntley School District 158, John Burkey, September 8

At the end of the Huntley District 158 school Board meeting, I asked Superintendent John Burkey if President Obama’s speech was going to be shown his students.

His answer was succinct:

“Nope.”

A bit different than what is happening in Crystal Lake’s grade schools.

Porkulus Update and Federal Money Tailor-Made for Huntley

August 10, 2009 By: Cal Skinner Category: Academic Drive, Bob Blazier, Crystal Lake, Crystal Lake Grade School District 47, Huntley School District 158, John Burkey, Nature Center, Reed Road, Veterans Acres

How many thousands of people in Illinois could receive low cost catastrophe health care for $13 million?

If the Obama administration is looking to save money, they might look at the money giveaway going on within their own administration.

What struck me is this press release from Governor Pat Quinn’s office:

Gov. Quinn announces $13 million is awarded to communities to create Safe Routes to School

CHICAGO – Governor Pat Quinn today announced $13.1 million in Safe Routes to School grants to schools and communities across the state. This 100 percent federally funded program is designed to enable and encourage children to walk and bike to school.

What’s it for?

  • Enable and encourage children, including those with disabilities, to walk and bicycle to school;
  • Make bicycling and walking to school a safer and more appealing transportation option, encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle from an early age; and
  • Facilitate projects and activities that will improve safety and reduce traffic, fuel consumption, and air pollution in the vicinity of primary and middle schools(Grades K-8)

When you see what current spending priorities are, does it give you confidence in how our government run our health care system?

The press release does make this interesting observation:

“With Illinois ranked fourth in the nation for childhood obesity rates, providing children with a safe and secure means of walking to school is an important tool to improve the health of our children.”

Locally, we have 100 percent of Huntley District 158’s students eligible for free transportation.

This is true even for the subdivisions like Covington Lakes, which is literally a stone’s throw from the schools off of Reed Road. You can see buses travelling through that subdivision when school starts. That’s where Superintendent John Burkey’s family lives.

Academic Drive through the corn field is also in need of about $900,000 of repair. It wasn’t built as a permanent road, just for emergency access, but it has become a major access route.

It is a “shovel ready” project with the engineering already done.

Did Huntley administrators already apply for this grant money? Academic Drive not only needs repair, but probably would qualify for sidewalk money, too, since it doesn’t have one.

If school district administrators did’t apply for this grant money, Huntley taxpayers will likely end up picking up the final road repair cost.

Another snippet from the Governor’s press release:

“IDOT Secretary Gary Hannig stated that the agency received almost 200 applications adding up to $27.9 million in requests,” Hannig said.”

Is your McHenry County school district one of those that applied?

Superintendent Burkey has opposed hiring a part time (but experienced) grant writer saying it was not necessary, that his staff was more than capable of doing the job.

Let’s see how much money Huntley gets from funded federal grant tailor made for Huntley.

Picking up grant money was a skill Crystal Lake Grade School District 47 excelled at.

The Crystal Lake Park District’s Nature Center in Veterans Acres was built with federal money that Bob Blazier snagged.

And when the free text book program began in Illinois, District 47 was johnny-on-the-spot after I alerted it. It got money during the pilot stage of the program, which was aimed at subdizing private schools.

Teachers were not allowed to picket on school property. Here you see them picketing at the entrance to Academic Drive.

District 47 Victim of Wire Fraud

July 10, 2009 By: Cal Skinner Category: Bank Fraud, Crystal Lake Grade School District 47, District 47, Wire Fraud

A friend noticed an important story that popped up on the Northwest Herald web site this afternoon.

From what I can gather, “significant” money has been illegally transferred from grade school district bank accounts to points unknown.

The Daily Herald reports,

“Because bank deposits are guaranteed by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the FBI is also working on the case.“

Guess I’ll have to get on the press release list for the elementary school district.
