Com Ed Power Grid Fails in Lakewood without an External Cause

May 13, 2013 By: Cal Skinner Category: Com Ed, Crystal Lake, Electric Outage, Electric Wires, Electricity, Lakewood

The brackets on this relative new Com Ed power line broke Sunday night about 8:30.

The brackets on this relative new Com Ed power line broke Sunday night about 8:30 causing about a six-hour power outage.

Com Ed had a power failure last night right in front of our Lakewood home.

My son was looking out the front window and saw two explosions.

He said looked like fireworks and startled him.

Here's a Com Ed crew fixing the same pole in August of 2006.

Here’s a Com Ed crew fixing the same pole in August, 2006..

After each one, the power went out, then came back on.

There was no wind and no rain.

No car hit a pole.

Simple failure of a couple of brackets, it appears.

I immediately call Commonwealth Edison and informed them.

It took about a half an hour for a truck to show up.

Even with the so-called Smart Grid Com Ed has succeeded in getting most local legislators to pass rate hikes to finance, the notice of the outage would not have brought the repair truck appreciably faster.

Although the cause of the damage was obvious–two brackets had collapsed from the pole, which is about fifty feet high–onto the wires causing them to short out, the truck went up and down the street looking at the rest of the line along Lake Avenue.

As I was beginning this story shortly after nine last night, the lights and the computer went dark again.

Over five hours later, our bedroom lights went on waking us about 2:15 AM.

And here’s what the repair to the electric system looked like this morning:

Here's the same pole after the five and a half hour repair.job.

Here’s the same pole after the five and a half hour repair job.

This section of Com Ed’s grid was installed about ten years ago. The part of Broadway cost a man his life.

Awaiting a call from Com Ed to answer my questions as to how many were affected and what the cause of the problem was.

Secret Shopper Scam of “at Least 665 Victims” Leads to Indictment of Crystal Lake Man

May 09, 2013 By: Cal Skinner Category: Crystal Lake, Michael Love, Michael Mackay, Secret Shopper

A press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office:

Crystal Lake Man Indicted in Fraud Scheme

ROCKFORD — A Crystal Lake, Ill. man was indicted yesterday on federal charges of mail fraud. MICHAEL S. MACKAY, 46, was charged with two counts of mail fraud for his role in a “secret shopper scheme,” where victims applied to work-at-home advertisements on the Internet believing they were being hired to work as a “secret shopper” or payment processor.

According to the indictment, from September 2011 to at least May 16, 2012, Mackay was involved in a scheme to defraud victims into falsely believing that they were hired as “secret shoppers” to evaluate and report their experiences with local businesses.

After applying for work, victims received a letter with at least one counterfeit negotiable instrument, such as a counterfeit money order.

The victims were instructed to deposit the counterfeit negotiable instrument in their financial institution, retain a certain percentage as payment for their services, go to the nearest Western Union and wire transfer the remaining proceeds as instructed.

The victims were also instructed to report their experience, believing they were hired as secret shoppers to evaluate local businesses, via email to an email address contained in the letter.

The participants in the scheme received the proceeds via the wire transfers before the victims learned that the money orders were counterfeit.

During the course of the scheme, Mackay received at least $2,000,000 in counterfeit negotiable instruments in packages sent to Crystal Lake from New York, Nigeria, and Ghana.

Each package contained counterfeit money orders, in amounts ranging from $900 to $2,000 each, that appeared to be issued by

  • the United States Postal Service
  • American Express
  • Capital One Bank
  • Citizens National Bank of Texas
  • First National Bank
  • Navy Federal Credit Union.

Mackay received email instructions attaching a “secret shopper” letter and United States Postal Service Express mailing labels.

According to the indictment, Mackay then placed a “secret shopper” letter in a United States Postal Service express mailing envelope along with at least two counterfeit money orders to at least 665 victims throughout the United States.

The indictment alleges that Mackay mailed over $1,000,000 in counterfeit money orders to the victims, receiving wire transfers of at least $10,000 from his victims and others involved in the scheme as payment for his role in the scheme before the victims learned that the negotiable instruments were counterfeit.

Each count of mail fraud carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, and a $250,000 maximum fine, or an alternate fine totaling twice the loss or twice the gain, whichever is greater, a period of supervised release of up to 3 years following imprisonment, and restitution. If convicted, the Court must impose a reasonable sentence under the advisory United States Sentencing Guidelines, as well as restitution.

The indictment was announced today by Gary S. Shapiro, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois; Pete Zegarac, Inspector-in-Charge of the Chicago Division of the United States Postal Inspection Service; and Gary J. Hartwig, Special Agent-in-Charge of Homeland Security Investigations in Chicago.

Members of the public are reminded that a criminal indictment contains only charges and is not evidence of guilt. The defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which the government has the burden of proving guilt of the defendant beyond a reasonable doubt.

Crystal Lake District 47 Grade School Board Has Three New Members

D47 Bd 5-13 top 3Just like McHenry County College, Elementary School 47′s Board has a major infusion of new blood.

Virginia Visin retired.

Incumbents Rob Routzahn and Ruth Scifo ran for re-election.

Pretty similar to the MCC Board of Trustees’ contest.

A former principal, Betsy Les was the third of what I have dubbed “the incumbent slate” for the District 47 Board.

Running from the outside were Donna Ricci and Eileen Palsgrove.

Les had lots of signs, four-by-four foot and regular yard signs.

Routzahn and Scifo shared yard signs. There were a good number.

I saw one joint sign for Ricci and Palsgrove.

Donna Ricca

Donna Ricci

D47 Bd 5-13 bottom 4Of the candidates, I only heard one in campaign mode.

That was Donna Ricci.

She asked for and received permission to speak to the Nunda Township Republican candidates’ night crowd.

Besides that and the signs, the only campaigning I saw was a post card.

It was sent on behalf of Ricci and Palsgrove by the Pro-Life Victory Committee.

I assume the Crystal Lake Elementary Teachers Association, CLETA, informed its members of its favorites.

The list used was probably the same one that Arne Waltmire used for his McHenry County College campaign mailing that hit my precinct on the Saturday before the election.

Waltmire is the Regional Director of the Illinois Education Association, but he came in seventh of nine candidates in the MCC Board of Trustees race.

Big Crystal Lake Police Presence in The Breakers’ Parking Lot

May 02, 2013 By: Cal Skinner Category: Crystal Lake, The Breakers

The Breakers is closed for repairs, but its parking lot was teaming with Crystal Lake Police cars around noon.

I think I counted eight police cars as I drove past The Breakers.

I think I counted eight police cars as I drove past The Breakers.

A friend of McHenry County Blog reported that a tanker truck with “Encompass” on the side was at the location when he drove by.

It was not by the time I got my act together.

I wonder if this massive police presence with merit a press release.
