Santorum Campaign Rolls Out 6th, 8th & 10th Congressional District Delegate Petitions

December 29, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: Bonnie Quirke, Dan Sugrue, David Rickert, Rick Santorum

Under the mew congressional map, the 6th District covers McHenry County’s Algonquin Township and points south and southeast all the way to Wheaton and, maybe, beyond.

The Rick Santorum campaign has released the petition for Presidential Convention Delegates and Alternates on the internet for the 6th. You can find it here.

These are the 6th District Delegate candidates:

  • Todd Hartwell – Elgin
  • Robert N. Tiballi – Elgin
  • Edward Novak – Bartlett

These are the 6th District alternates:

  • Michael Howard – Palatine
  • Rusty Popp – Wheaton
  • Susan Ejzak – Palatine

None are from McHenry County, but these are the folks who will be on the ballot, if they get enough signatures by the deadline of Friday, January 6th.

In the 8th District, the candidates’ for Delegate are

  • Michael Machlet – Schaumburg
  • David J. Rickert – Elgin
  • John Schmitz – Bloomingdale

10th District Rick Santorum Delegate candidate poses with former State Rep. and GOP National Committeewoman Penny Pullen, one of those working to put together a slate of Republican Convention Delegates and Alternates.

Alternate Delegate candidates in the 8th are

  • Greg Bare – Hoffman Estates
  • Letitia Reeks – Streamwood
  • Ed Southwell – Elgin

In the 10th District the Delegate candidates are

  • Tony Raymond – Lake Villa
  • Bonnie Quirke – Libertyville
  • Dan Sugrue – Green Oaks

Alternate Delegates in the 10th follow:

  • Jim Quirke – Libertyville
  • Rachael McCarthy – Libertyville
  • Michele Raymond – Lake Villa

In his post on the Illinois Santorum web site Thursday, Jon Zahm relays encouraging news for his candidate out of Iowa:

  1. Romney – 25%
  2. Paul – 22%
  3. Santorum – 16%
  4. Gingrich – 14%
  5. Perry – 11%
  6. Bachmann – 9%

The petition to put Santorum on the state’s public opinion poll ballot, which results in no delegates, is here.

The home page of the web site is here.

Congressional Candidates Court McHenry County Pro-Lifers

June 26, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: Arie Friedman, Barb Wheeler, Cheryl Hammerand, Chris Lauzen, Dan Duffy, Dan Sugrue, Irene Napier, Joe Gottemoller, Joe Walsh, John O'Neill, Larry Oakford, Lou Bianchi, Maria Rodriguez, Marie Chmiel, Mary Alger, McHenry County, McHenry County Board., Michael Chmiel, Nancy Cole, Patriots United, Pro-Life, Pro-Life Pig Roast, Randy Hultgren, Rich Evans, Robert Dold, Shawn Green, Sid Mathias, Steve Rooney

The annual Pro-Life Pig Roast was held at Irene Napier’s Valley View Road farm northeast of Crystal Lake Sunday and there were candidates galore.

Crystal Lake Tea Party leader Mary Alger and McHenry County Pro-Life Matriarch Irene Napier listen to Congressman Randy Hultgren.

With Governor Pat Quinn’s having just signed the Democrats’ reapportionment bill for for congressional districts, the two incumbents living in the new 14th District showed up.

Joe Walsh, who lives between McHenry and Johnsburg, arrived first.

He worked the crowd, then spoke to it.

He and other elected officials were drafted to auction off donated items.

Randy Hultgren, from the DuPage County end of the new 14th District came with his family.

Congressman Randy Hultgren spoke to those attending the Pro-Life Pig Roast.

After speaking to those gathered, Hultgren also became a celebrity auctioneer.

State Senator Chris Lauzen

State Senator Dan Duffy

State Senators Dan Duffy and Chris Lauzen told what was happening in Springfield.

Then, they were also impressed to be auctioneers.

Two people whose names have been mentioned as potential candidates for the Republican nomination for State Representative in the new 64th district, which is divided about 50-50 between McHenry County and Lake County were sighted.

Barb Wheeler making a big point at the Pro-Life Pig Roast.

John O'Neill

Retiring McHenry County Board member Barb Wheeler was in attendance, as was McHenry Grade School and Library Board member John O’Neill.

Democrat State Rep. Jack Franks flattered O’Neill by removing the Spring Grove precincts where O’Neil beat him last year from the boundaries of his newly-drawn 63rd District.

Both are possibilities, as is attorney Joe Gottemoller.  Wheeler and Gottemoller have Crystal Lake addresses.  O’Neill lives in McHenry.

Rich Evans (on the right) discusses a run for Congress in the new 8th District with incumbent Joe Walsh.

A potential candidate for the 8th congressional district is Rich Evans.

A CPA, Evans has contacts in the 8th District, although he now lives in Crystal Lake.

Incumbent 8th District Congressman Joe Walsh is not expected to run for re-election in the new district.

John and Josie Jung.

In addition to Barb Wheeler, three McHenry County Board
members were in attendance:

  • John Hammerand of Woodstock,
  • John Jung of Bull Valley and
  • Nick Provenzano of McHenry

McHenry County Board member John Hammerand spoke with potential District 6 candidate Shawn Green of Coral Township.

A potential candidate for District 6, former Huntley School Board President Shawn Green, attended with his toddler and pregnant wife Angela.

Other elected officials were also chowing down.

Johnsburg School Board member Steve Rooney and State Senator Chris Lauzen converse.

Judge Mike Chmiel

Included were

  • McHenry County State’s Attorney Lou Bianchi,
  • Wonder Lake Fire Protection District Trustee Cheryl Hammerand, and
  • Johnsburg School District Board member Steve Rooney.

Judge Michael Chmiel was there with his wife, Marie, a former McHenry County Board member.

Newly-named Patriots United Executive Director Maria Rodriguez converses Right to Life McHenry County leader Nancy Cole at the Pig Roast.

Patriots United announced that Maria Rodriguez has been hired as Executive Director.

Out of the ordinary was the appearance of two guys not seeking office,

  • physician Arie Friedman and
  • former State Rep. candidate Dan Sugrue.

Arie Friedman and Dan Sugrue have a conversation.

After his run against an incumbent Democrat in Lake County last year, Mike Madigan put the woman who beat him in a district with incumbent Republican Sid Mathias.  Any chance that Sugrue could win in the Green Oaks district where he lives is minimal.  He was elected the the village board his past spring, however.

Friedman ran in the 10th congressional district Republican primary against Robert Dold.  He has often spoken in public forms against Obamacare.

2010 Family PAC Cruise – Part 3

August 22, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Bill Brady, Dan Sugrue, Family PAC, Jim DeMint, Joe Scheidler, John Curry, Kirk Dillard, Sandy Rios, Tom Morrison

When we left my Family PAC cruise experience yesterday, I hadn’t even gotten on the boat.

I saw Cook County Commissioner Liz Gorman talking to someone on the pier.

Cook County Commissioner Liz Gorman

Sandy Rios isn’t a politician, but since she is well-known and has attended so many Family PAC cruises, I include her photo, too.

Pro-Life Action League Founder Joe Scheidler and Sandy Rios had a heart-to-heart talk.

Finally, I made it on board.

Maria Rodriguez and Bill Brady hold a spirited conversation on board while 32nd Ward Republican Committeeman observes.

It’s a good thing gubernatorial candidate Bill Brady stayed for the cruise, because a lot of people wanted to talk with him.

State Senators Bill Brady and Randy Hultgren talk before the boat left the dock. Compare the tans. Who do you think has knocked on more doors?

Paul Caprio talked to State Senator Kirk Dillard prior to Dillard’s introduction of the man who barely beat him for the Republican Party nomination for governor.

After the introduction, Brady addressed the crowd.

Who else did I see?

Family PAC Chicago River Cruise Features Conservative Politicians, Activists – Part 6

August 29, 2009 By: Cal Skinner Category: 14th Congressional District, Adam Andrezejewski, Bill Foster, Dan Sugrue, Family PAC, Jeff Danklefsen, Kathy Ryg, Kirk Dillard, Margo Sugrue, Paul Caprio

This is article number 6 that McHenry County Blog has published about the people who attended Paul Caprio’s August Family PAC cruise.

In the first, U.S. Senator and Dr. Tom Coburn’s take on the health care debate.

The rest are full of pictures of participants:

Part 5

Near the end of the cruise 14th congressional district GOP aspirant Jeff Danklefsen approached me. You see him handing me his card. He seeks to replace Democrat Bill Foster, who replaced former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert.

The boat was docked and emptying out when I saw Dan Sugrue. He is running for the second time in Lake County against Democrat Kathy Ryg. He tells me she voted for Governor Pat Quinn’s 50% income tax hike bill. Since the cruise Ryg has announced that she is taking another job. That certainly to increase his chances of gaining the seat.

GOP gubernatorial nomination seeker Adam Andrzejewski was also downstairs near the end of the cruise. Sugrue’s wife Margo was talking with him.

As I left the boat, GOP gubernatorial aspirant Kirk Dillard was chatting with Family PAC Executive Director Paul Capiro.

Thus endeth the 2009 Family PAC cruise photos. This fundraiser is the one I enjoy the most. You don’t get a view of the Sears, oops, Willis Tower from the South Branch of the Chicago River like this on an expressway.

Join us next year.

Dan Sugrue’s Chances of Winning State Rep. Seat in Lake County Skyrocket

August 17, 2009 By: Cal Skinner Category: 50% Income Tax Hike, Dan Sugrue, Kathy Ryg, Lake County, Pat Quinn, State Representative

At last year’s Pro-Life Pork Roast at Resurrection Center, I met Dan Sugrue. He was running for state representative against Kathy Ryg.

You see him giving his 2008 pitch.

That’s his daughter Vivian by his side. (Had I been quicker, I would have gotten a shot of a great leg hug.)

His was a pretty hopeless quest in the Year of Obama, I thought.

He ran the race and told me, when I met him and his wife Margo on Paul Caprio’s Family PAC cruise last Tuesday, he told me he was challenging Ryg again.

Sugrue told me that Ryg’s voting record would give her big time trouble this year.

In one of Illinois most wealthy counties, you see, Ryg voted for Governor Pat Quinn’s 50% income tax increase. There were other instances of poor representation that I didn’t jot down.

The boat was docked and emptying out when I saw Dan Sugrue. Usually, you can’t get me to take a posed photo, but it was late and dark. Here’s what Sugrue looks like now.

Had he known that Ryg was going to “retire,” as she announced today, his smile would have been broader.

She says she’s stepping down to head up Voices for Illinois Children.

I figure she’s quitting early because she knows she couldn’t get re-elected.

Since there is an open seat and next year looks like a Republican year, I would expect Sugrue to have GOP primary challengers. But, he will have a head start because of his campaign last year.

State Senator Pam Althoff (R-McHenry) praised Ryg in a Tribune article.

Part 2 – Candidates Cruising with Family PAC

July 31, 2008 By: Cal Skinner Category: Anita Forte-Scott, Brendan Appel, Dan Sugrue, Darlene Senger, David McAloon, Dwight Kay, Family PAC, Lawrence Bruckner, Mike Sweeney, Paul Caprio, Phyllis Schlafly, Terri Ann Winterrmute

Tuesday, I put up an article about Phyllis Schlafly’s receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award on Paul Caprio’s Family PAC cruise.

Yesterday, I followed up with the congressional candidates, state senate incumbents and the Republican candidate for Cook County State’s Attorney.

Today, we move onto the challengers.

Running on the North Shore is Brendan Appel. The Glenview resident is emphasizing property tax reform, fighting correction, requiring a two-thirds super majority to raise taxes, “two strikes and you’re out and enforcing immigration laws.

I saw Terri Ann Wintermute early in the evening, but she disappeared to the lower level of the boat. That’s the place to be if it’s raining, but it wasn’t. I finally got a photo of her when she was disembarking. You will remember that I met her in Decatur at the State Republican Convention.

Wintermute has more money than Linda Holmes, the Democratic Party incumbent she is challenging and to whom she lost in 2006 when Republican State Senator Ed Petka retired.

Wintermute had $102,000 at the end June, while Holmes had $49,800.

The final senate candidate (hope I didn’t miss any) was Mike Sweeney. I remember him because he is running for the 33rd district seat. The 33rd district was the one I represented in the 1970′s

Now it is in the Mount Prospect, Elk Grove Village area. Sweeney is Elk Grove Township Clerk. He is an assistant manager of a Walgreen’s store.

His palm card stresses he is the only

  • lifelong resident of the district,
  • one who will refuse to accept pay raises,
  • candidate that will protect small business against Gov. Blagojevich’s policies of driving jobs and opportunities to surrounding states,
  • one that will NOT vote to re-elect Gov. Blagojevich’s closest ally as Senate President,
  • candidate who will hold the line on taxes by reigning in out-of-control spending,
  • one who will demand the state pay existing bills before spending more tax dollars.

Among the candidates for state representative was Anita Forte-Scott, the one who will challenge Paul Froehlich, the Republican incumbent who decided to become a Democrat. She has a healthy resume, which includes the presidency of the Schaumburg Township District Library Board, owner/administrator of the Bright Stars Academy, founder and president of the Poplar Creek Watershed Planning Coalition. She is a member of the Schaumburg/Hoffman Estates Rotary Club. I can’t find a web site.

She has hardly any money in the bank, but House Republicans are pretty incensed about Froehlich’s party switching, so abundant money could flow.

Dan Sugrue, the Lake County man running against super liberal Kathleen Ryg and who attended the Pro-Life Victory Committee’s pig roast at Resurrection Center, was on the boat.

Sugrue’s platform includes property tax relief, eliminating the state sales tax on gasoline, requiring a balanced budget, repairing and rebuilding roads without allowing the money to be diverted to other purposes (as Democrats have done this century), increasing higher education scholarships and “establish(ing) the nation’s toughest ethics laws and root(ing) out government corruption.” I can’t find a web site.

Dwight Kay came all the way up from Alton for the cruise. The GOP candidate for the 112th district against Jay Hoffman, one of Governor Rod Blagojevich’s close buddies. In 2004, Kay was finance committee chairman for Illinois Supreme Court Justice Lloyd Karmeier. That was the race that set the Metro East trial lawyers back on their rear ends.

Kay was the first candidate for state representative to call for impeachment hearings for Blagojevich. He obviously has more courage than incumbent house members, none of whom have introduced such a resolution. Kay is senior vice-president of Cassens Trucking.

The Metro East area is looking more and more like the outer suburbs in Chicagoland. Kay can’t pull off an upset with the $17,000 he has on hand, but with an infusion of money he might follow in the footsteps of Frank Watson and Ron Stephens. I hope he is calling all of those Karmeier contributors.

Naperville City Councilman Darlene Senger was another candidate courting conservatives on the boat. She is running to replace retiring Republican State Representative Joe Dunn.

Senger is a financial advisor. If she can translate that into sensible advice on the state budget, her election could be worth the price of admission.

Looking at her web site shows a mix of local concern —opposition to the Canadian Northern’s takeover of the EJ&E Railroad, which will increase suburban congestion along its entire length—and statewide concerns, e.g., fighting political corruption. She has Democratic and Green Party opponents, both women.

Dave McAloon can be seen in the top photo talking to Phyllis Schlafly. He is running for state representative against incumbent Careen Gordon. Gordon’s campaign was financing oh so much by Chicago money.

McAloon is from Kankakee County and has been active in conservative causes for years.

The only other candidate I remember meeting was Lawrence Bruckner. He is running against Mike Boland, an ally of Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn from the Quad Cities area.

Bruckner was a shot from my past. He reminded me that he had met me when I was the Republican candidate for State Comptroller.

That was 1982.

What a memory.

He must have been at the press conference that then-State Rep. Tim Bell set up for me so we could both pledge to work against an income tax increase which we, incorrectly, it turns out, said was most likely to occur if Adlai Stevenson III beat Jim Thompson for re-election.

Democratic Party Candidate for Coroner Dave Bachmann Attends Pro-Life Pig Roast

June 23, 2008 By: Cal Skinner Category: Dan Duffy, Dan Sugrue, Dave Bachmann, Irene Napier, Joe Birkett, Lou Bianchi, Steve Greenberg, Steve Sauerberg

The most interesting political development at the Resurrection Center Pro-Life Victory PAC Pig Roast was the appearance of Dave Bachmann, Democratic Party candidate for McHenry County Coroner.

Bachmann was even allowed to give a speech like the other statewide (actual and potential), legislative and countywide candidates.

The others were all Republicans.

Bachmann’s was the last speech and a lot of people had left, but my impression was that it was well received.

Bachmann repeated the personal story that was first published here on McHenry County Blog.

For those of you who have not followed the details of Bachmann’s campaign, here are articles (most of which contain content from his keyboard):

That’s what the Crystal Lake Herald, Woodstock Sentinel, McHenry Plain Dealer, Marengo Republican, Harvard Herald, River Valley Clarion, Richardson’s Publications, etc., did in the past.

My goal is to allow candidates to speak directly to voters…the way they used to be able to in newspapers.

As the Republican speakers gave their pitches, Bachmann sat listening, as can be seen in the next photo.

Dr. Steve Sauerberg, the GOP candidate for U.S. Senate against Dick Durbin spoke, as did Joe Birkett, the man in the next photograph. He is thinking about running for statewide office for a third time.

State Rep. McHenry County Republican County Chairman Mike Tryon spoke, as did McHenry County State’s Attorney Lou Bianchi and 8th congressional district candidate Steve Greenberg. You can see Greenberg pointing proudly to his family, who appear at the bottom of this explanation of the pictures.

Next is Dan Duffy, who is running for an open state senate seat being vacated by State Senator Bill Peterson.

Finally, Dan Sugrue can be seen with his daughter Vivian at his side. I missed getting a photo of a great leg hug.
