Skillicorn Seeks Greater East Dundee Transparency, Vows “No” Vote on Expenditure Not on Web Site

December 04, 2012 By: Cal Skinner Category: East Dundee, Transparency

Allen Skillicorn

A press release from Allan Skillicorn concerning his strategy to get accounts payable posted on the East Dundee web site prior to village board vote:

“In an effort to promote greater transparency and accountability, municipalities need to post all accounts payable, vendor payments, and employee salaries on their websites.

“The greatest portions of our property taxes go to local municipalities and school districts.

“Abuse is much more likely if taxpayers cannot see bids, vendor payments, and employee salaries.

“As an elected Trustee in East Dundee, I demand greater transparency for the people I serve.

“You cannot improve, what you cannot measure.

“Starting in January 2013 I pledge to vote against expenditures which are not published on the village website.

“I encourage other taxpayers and elected officials to take a similar stand.

“The public deserves better accountability at all levels of government.”

East Dundee News Update

Allen Skillicorn

Spring and summer are here and I wanted to give you an update about what is happening in East Dundee. The East Dundee portion of property tax bills actually went down slightly this year for residents. Even though my fellow trustees rejected my “Freeze The Levy” plan to provided more tax relief, they did compromise by hiking the levy a smaller amount than originally planned. I will continue pushing my “Freeze The Levy” plan to help all property owners during these tough economic times.

River Haven Subdivision

Construction of the Senior and Veteran Housing will begin this summer in the field just north of River Haven, where Dominick’s once was. The additional residents in that location should help us attract the full-service grocery store we desperately need.

Saturn Building

A large used car franchise, J.D. Byrider, has bought the vacant Saturn dealership. Renovation will begin this summer and they plan on hiring 25 employees.

Downtown along Rt. 72

Two new businesses are moving into the downtown area. Made to Measure, a quality control engineering firm has purchased and is renovating the vacant brick building at 302 E. Main. The building originally was built as a Buick dealership almost 80 years ago. Directly across River Street, Van’s Frozen Custard is moving in. Both buildings are trying to preserve historically accurate, yet current architecture.

Electrical Aggregation

Unless you opt out of aggregation, most homeowners should see a couple hundred dollars of savings over the next 12 months. Electricity and billing still comes from ComEd, the only difference will be slightly lower electricity bills. Homeowners will be automatically enrolled, so you don’t need to do anything to sign up.

New Drinking Water Treatment Plant

As you read this, the new lightly-softened village water system should be online. Our new water treatment plant offers better quality water than the previous well and system. Areas with older pipes and infrastructure will see additional cloudiness until the entire system is flushed clear. Feel free to contact me or the water department for more details.

I want to publicly thank the Robert Skurla and Doug Bergren of the Economic Development team for their hard work and accomplishments. I also need to thank Water Superintendent Tim Wilson for successfully implementing the water system.

Feel free to contact me directly at 847-417-5611 or allen@allenskillicorn.com.

East Dundee Village Trustee Allen Skillcom Endorses Tryon

May 26, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: Allen Skillcom, East Dundee, Mike Tryon, Reapportionment, Redistricting, Remap

Allen Skillcom, a Trustee for the Village of East Dundee who lives in the newly-carved 64th state representative district where House Speaker Mike Madigan has gerrymandered Mike Tryon, has endorsed the incumbent.

His endorsement follows:

Allen Skillcom

“To dispel any rumors, Incumbent 64th House District Representative Michael Tryon lives inside the 66th District on the legislative map proposed by the House Democrats.

“The Illinois Republican Party still demonstrates a lack of leadership in many areas, but State Representative Michael Tryon is not one of those areas.

“He has been an excellent resource to Crystal Lake and McHenry County.

“At this time I would have little reason to not support the reelection of Representative Michael Tryon.”

RTA Myths

May 09, 2009 By: Cal Skinner Category: CTA, East Dundee, McHenry County Conservation District, Milton Pikarsky, Park and Ride, Regional Transportation Authority, Route 12, Route 25, Route 72, RTA, Wisconsin

Every time we go to Milwaukee via the four-lane highway that connects with Illinois’ U.S. 12, I see the park and ride site on the Wisconsin side of the state line.

The article you see having the RTA announce a $100,000 study ($80,000 from the RTA) of the feasibility of a transit center in East Dundee at the intersection of Route 25 and 72 reminds me of a similar suggestion for the corner of Randall Road where CVS pharmacy now sits.

It probably would have been about where the McHenry County Conservation District is planning to build a parking lot for those wishing to enter the Lake in the Hills Fed from Crystal Lake.

It was going to be a bus station and a parking lot where commuters could begin carpools.

That plan was right up there in fantasy land with the first RTA (former CTA) Chairman Milton Pikarsky’s stood near the then-Crystal Lake Herald office (near the current location of Nick’s Pizzera) and announced that eventually train service would run from Crystal Lake to Gary, Indiana.

The bike path was then a railroad right-of-way. Every time we go to Milwaukee via the four-lane highway that connects with Illinois’ U.S. 12, I see the park and ride site on the Wisconsin side of the state line.

East Dundee Set to Raise Taxes by Creating TIF

November 13, 2007 By: Cal Skinner Category: District 300, East Dundee, Tax Increment Financing District, TIF

I never cease to marvel how municipalities seek to emulate the way Mayor Richard Daley has raped the tax base with Tax Increment Financing districts.

A TIF’s creation allows cities and villages to get all the benefit of growth for 23 years, although the General Assembly has increased that length in at least Peoria TIFs.

East Dundee residents who want to object may do so Tuesday night at the Village Hall Annex.

The TIF’s creation will raise the taxes of everyone in Carpentersville District 300, regardless of what village officials say.

The November 11th Rebecca O’Halloran article in Elgin’s Daily Courier News that inspired this post is here.
