I guess I’ve slipped off State Senator Pam Althoff’s press release list, but, fortunately, I discovered on < that one of McHenry County’s legislators is endorsing her colleague Matt Murphy for Lieutenant Governor.

Murphy started off running for governor, then hooked up with former GOP state party chairman Andy McKenna and switched to the second spot.

His first campaign appearance in McHenry County, as far as I know, was on July 9th at Nick’s Pizza in Crystal Lake.

He was a national convention delegate candidate for Fred Thompson in 2008.

He favors a structural change in the General Assembly that I promoted in my 2002 Libertarian Party gubernatorial campaign—Term Limits for Legislative Leaders.

In the debate when Illinois Senate Democrats passed a 67% income tax hike, Murphy was a true star.

Murphy is from Palatine.

The following press release from the presidential campaign of Fred Thompson announces that State Senator and third place finisher in the 2006 Republican gubernatorial primary election, Bill Brady, will chair former U.S. Senator Fred Thompson’s campaign for president in Illinois.

Local Congressman Don Manzullo (16th district) will serve as vice chairman.

The press release follows:

Thompson Campaign
Announces Illinois
State Leadership

McLean, VA – Senator Fred Thompson’s campaign today announced its top leadership for its operation in the State of Illinois. State Senator Bill Brady of Bloomington will serve as the Chairman of the campaign’s state organization and Congressman Don Manzullo will serve as its Vice-Chairman.

“The groundswell of support that we’re seeing among Illinois Republicans makes me very excited to be a part of this organization,” Senator Brady said.

“Senator Thompson’s consistently conservative record and his willingness to take on America’s most pressing challenges uniquely prepares him to not only lead our party, but also win a general election, ensuring that our nation’s military will remain strong, our families safe, and our taxes low.”

“I’m honored to serve as Vice Chairman of Fred Thompson’s Illinois operation. Fred Thompson has the clear vision and common sense conservative principles that we need in Washington to address the modern challenges facing our nation,” said Congressman Manzullo.

“These two leaders bring a wealth of experience to our Illinois organization,” said National Political Director Randy Enwright.

“Senator Brady and Congressman Manzullo and their combined experience in the state will help us lead a strong campaign in the state of Illinois.”

Senator Brady has served in the Illinois Senate since 2002 and previously served in the state House of Representatives from 1993 to 2001. He was a candidate for the Republican nomination for Governor in 2006 and has continued to travel throughout Illinois to help build a stronger state Republican Party. He has been a leader in urging stronger state ethics laws, promoting a stronger business climate in Illinois and in defeating massive tax increases proposed by the current Democratic administration.

Congressman Manzullo was first elected in 1992 to serve the people of the 16th Congressional District of Illinois, which includes the counties of Winnebago, Boone, Stephenson, Jo Daviess, Ogle, Carroll, the majority of McHenry County and parts of DeKalb and Whiteside counties.

In the 110th Congress, he sits on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, where he is the top Republican on the Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific and the Global Environment and a member of the Subcommittee on International Terrorism, Nonproliferation and Trade. He continues to serve on the Financial Services Committee, where he sits on the Subcommittee on Capital Markets, Insurance and Government Sponsored Enterprises and the Subcommittee on Domestic and International Monetary Policy, Trade and Technology.

GOP Straw Poll Shenanigans at the State Fair?

August 16, 2007 By: Cal Skinner Category: Fred Thompson, Illinios State Fair, Illinois, Illinois Repubilcan Party, Mitt Romney, Ron Paul, Straw Poll

The big news about Republican Day at the Illinois State Fair will be that Mitt Romney got 40% of the vote.

But the bigger news would have been that libertarian, anti-war Republican presidential candidate Congressman Ron Paul came in 2nd.

Incredibly, who had how many votes was visible by the folks running the straw poll…and others.

At 3:30 a Ron Paul supporter saw the totals. His candidate had 151 votes. He was in second place.

Fred Thompson was in third place at 148 votes.

Although the party rules said the polls would be open from 11 AM to 4 PM, an announcement was made that, because of the rain, the polls would be kept open until 4:30.

Does that sound like what the Democrats do in St. Louis?

Then someone in authority said the polls would close at 4:15.

But at 4:08, the voting ended.

I guess the Establishment folks must have been able to round up enough votes to push Thompson ahead of Paul.

When I listened to Channel 7’s Andy Shaw at 5, he said that Romney had won with 40% of the vote.

I asked my source who got how many votes. He said the GOP didn’t release numbers, just percentages.

I find no results on the party web site.

Being able to trust the vote counters is essential to making a democracy work.

A lot of the new folks who came to Republican Day are leaving with a bitter taste in their mouths.
