Barb Wheeler greets Fred and Lynn Wickham at her Wauconda fund raiser.

Teeni Weenie Bikini” was the come-on for State Rep.-to-be Barb Wheeler Saturday in Wauconda.

There may have been some at Lindy’s Landing on Bangs Lake, but they were covered up.

State Rep. and McHenry County GOP Chairman Mike Tryon and Vice Chairman John McCrory, who is heading up the local Romney for President campaign.

Some people might wonder why people running unopposed for the Illinois General Assembly need to hold fund raisers.

Nunda Township Trustee Joni Smith, husband Precinct Committeeman Brent Smith, County Board member Tina Hill, County Board candidate Mary McClellan and her husband Ed.

In the case of all Republican legislators, their leaders expect contributions that can be used elsewhere in Illinois in the goal of winning control of the chamber in question.

County Board candidate Michael Carbone and State Senate candidate Joe Neal

Wheeler, for example, is expected to pony up $5,000 a year.

Former State Rep. Al Salvi hugs his sister Barb Wheeler.

Her more senior McHenry County colleague Mike Tryon is assessed $10,000 per year.

Joe and Barb Wheeler

And State Senator Pam Althoff, because of her unpaid leadership position as the one who chairs the Senate caucus, needs to come up with $20,000 per year.

Nunda Township GOP Vice Chairman Mike Shorten and his wife Cheryl were in attendance.

There were plenty of Lake County politicians. Lake County Recorder of Deeds candidate Bob Bednar was there, for instance, as were State’s Attorney candidate Mike Nerheim and County Board candidate Tom Weber.

Gifts Sought for Underprivileged Nunda Township Children

A press release from Nunda Township Trustee Joni Smith:

Gift Donations Needed for Underprivileged Children

Nunda Township Family Working to Collect Gifts

Prairie Grove, IL- Nunda Township Trustee Joni Smith and her family have taken up a personal mission to make sure that all children in Nunda Township have a present from Santa underneath their tree this year and they are seeking help from the local community to make Christmas wishes come true.

Working off a list that provides only the ages gender of kids in Nunda Township who’s families are struggling to keep food on their table as well as the heat and lights on in their homes, Smith, her husband Brent and their children Zach, Chelsi, Krista and Derreck are working to collect gifts; however they have been overwhelmed by the number of needy families.

Joni and Brent Smith

“There are 102 children in Nunda Township who’s families are clearly struggling to get by. Oddly enough there are equally 51 boys and 51 girls who’s ages range from 7 months to 18 years of age,” Joni said.

“My family and I have collected just about 30 items so far, but we have a long way to go in a very short time to collect the entire 102 gifts for these children.”

Working in cooperation with the Nunda Supervisor’s office, Smith said that she will not know which families will be receiving the gifts, “Even though we will not see who is enjoying our gifts we can all take a moment on Christmas day to know that a child in Nunda Township who has no control over the economy or what has been dealt to them can have a moment of joy knowing Santa Clause made it to their house this year.”

Anyone who would like to help can contact Joni Smith via cell phone at 815-245-0836 to arrange for pick up unwrapped gifts for a boy or girl between the ages of 7 months and 18 by December 15th.

For more information, please contact Joni Smith by calling 815-245-0836, or e-mail Joni at coonpy@att.net.

John O’Neill Holds Fund Raiser

Johnsburg School Board member Steve Rooney, Assistant State's Attorney Demetri Tsilimigras and John O'Neill converse his O'Neill's fund raiser.

Prairie Isle Golf Club was the site for a Tuesday fund raiser for District 3 McHenry County Board candidate John O’Neill.

Political consultant Bryan Javor chats with State Rep. and McHenry County Chairman Mike Tryon.

O’Neill is one of five Republican candidates vying for four slots on the fall 2012 ballot.

Nunda Township Trustee JonI Smith and Nunda Townshlp GOP Chairman Brent Smith were sharing views.

With incumbent Barb Wheeler running for State Representative, only two Republican incumbents remain–Nick Provenzano and Mary Donner. Both are running for re-election.

Star of the evening was baby Teddy O'Neill, here being held by GOP Precinct Committeeman Joyce Story.

Two non-incumbents besides O’Neill have made their intentions know–Nunda Township Trustee Jim Schlader and former District 2 County Board member Lyn Orphal.

It is expected that Democratic Party incumbent Kathy Bergan Schmidt will be running for re-election.

Nunda Township Republican Party Chairman Reacts to Munaretto’s Request to Change County Remap Lines

May 25, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: Brent Smith, Dan Duffy, Joni Smith, Marc Munaretto, McHenry County, McHenry County Board., Nunda Township, Nunda Township Republican Central Committee, Nunda Township Republican Picnic, Nunda Township Republicans, Reapportionment, Redistricting, Remap

Yesterday, McHenry County Blog published an email request from Algonquin McHenry County Board member Marc Munaretto to spin the boundaries counterclockwise in the Southeastern part of McHenry County.

This is the reaction of Brent Smith, the Republican Township Chairman of Nunda Township:

Nunda Township Republican Central Committeeman Brent Smith and his wife, Nunda Township Trustee Joni Smith, converse with State Senator Dan Duffy at last fall's Nunda Township GOP Picnic.

I OPPOSE the latest proposed changes to the re-map by County Board Member Dist 1 Marc Munaretto.

I was 1 of 3 residents for Dist 3 that stood up in front of the County Board that APPROVED the proposed redistricting map for Dist. 3.

In my opinion taking in consideration the amount of time that was already put into the redistricting map, Marc Munaretto should have worked with his constituents prior to last weeks County Board meeting to make these changes, like we did.

Is this going to result in another public hearing to approve these proposed changes in next months meeting?

County Fair Politicians

August 08, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Bill Baruth, Bob Kaempfe, Brent Smith, Don Manzullo, Gordon Graham, Jack Franks, Jesse White, John O'Neill, Joni Smith, Libertarian Party, McHenry County Democratic Central Committee, McHenry County Democrats, McHenry County Fair, McHenry County Regional Superintendent of Education, McHenry County Republican Central Committee, McHenry County Republican Party, McHenry County Republicans, McHenry County Sheriff, McHenry County Sheriff's Department, Melissa Bean, Nancy Shepherdson, Sally Wiggins

The McHenry County Fair is a place that a politician can meet a lot of people. I loved working them while I was running for County Treasurer and in that office from 1966-70. Not to mention the 16 years I served as state representative in the 1970′s and 1990′s.

Yesterday afternoon, I arrived just after 5.

Before I got in the gate, I saw 8th District Congresswoman Melissa Bean greeting people outside the ticket gate.

Congresswoman Melissa Bean greeted voters and gave away candy outside the ticket booth of the McHenry County Fair late Friday afternoon.

Pretty much everyone without a pit pass for the tractor pull had walk past her and her aide. A real “pressing the flesh” event. She was giving away something with sugar in it, which, amazingly, I was able to pass up.

Joe Williams, unopposed Republican candidate for Regional Superintendent of Schools was attending with his family.

The next candidate, Joe Williams, introduced himself at the ticket booth. Having no fall opponent for the office of McHenry County Regional Superintendent of Schools, he was in family mode. Just taking in the fairgrounds’ experience.

Never can predict where one will run into a candidate. John O'Neill had just bought corn on the cob for his kids.

Republican candidate for State Representative John O’Neill, a McHenry Grade School Board member and McHenry Library Trustee, had paused to buy corn on the cob from the Knights of Columbus of Woodstock and McHenry.

The tent for Jack Franks is strategically placed at the intersection where people either head to the livestock or go south to the commercial buildings.

I passed Jack Franks’ booth, but he wasn’t there. I did get a smiley face from a young man staffing his well-placed tent, however.

Independent judicial candidate Sally Wiggins stands in front of her tent.

Sally Wiggins, the Independent candidate for judge, had a tent on the way to the main place politicians were gathered.

Sally Wiggins was not wearing high heels at the McHenry County Fair.

I discovered she was not wearing high heels, as she has been every other time I have seen her.  She was wearing boots.

Sally Wiggins was distributing 20 different stickers to people who stopped by her County Fair tent. Click to enlarge any image.

She was passing out stickers with multiple messages.  I imagine most of her campaign themes, experience and background are included.

This is the first time I have ever seen any candidate distribute more than one sticker at an event.

That’s a campaign technique I have never seen before. So, that makes two innovations (three, if you could running as an “Independent”):

  • roses at parades and
  • stickers with multiply messages

Mike Mahon wore his campaign tee shirt.

Walking past Wiggins’ booth was Democratic Party candidate for sheriff, Mike Mahon.

Nunda Township Trustee Joni Smith and her son were wearing Kieth Nygren tee shirts.

Nunda Township Trustee Joni Smith came walking down the path. She and her son were wearing Nygren tee shirts, so I got photos to balance this story.

Nunda Township Republican Party Chairman Brent Smith, an avid Keith Nygren supporter, confronts Mike Mahon, Nygren's Democratic Party challenger.

Slightly behind was husband Brent Smith. He confronted Mahon asking if he had been arrested for DUI.

“Have you read my press release?” Mahon replied.

This went on for a while until a women in the booth next door chided them for not setting a good example for the children at the fair.

In any event, I sense the subject of a forthcoming hit piece against Mahon.

Flashing lights drew people to the Sheriff's Squad Car.

I passed two vehicles from the Sheriff’s Department that were right outside the Sheriff’s Department’s official booth.

Sheriff Keith Nygren engaged kids passing his booth.

A uniformed Sheriff Keith Nygren was standing right inside the door at one of two booths (three, if you count the vehicles outside) being sponsored by the Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff Keith Nygren engages children while their parents watch the interchange.

Nygren was in campaign mode, aiming his pitches at children.

Keith Nygren bounces a ball to a little boy.

He gave some high fives to kids and bounced a ball for younger ones to catch.

Republican Party booth at the McHenry County Fair.

Right around the corner was the GOP booth.

Gordon Graham was handing out nail files and Teddy Grahams. The Teddy Grahams hit ths spot.

Gordon Graham was passing out nail files and Teddy Grahams. Showing good campaign technique was the positioning of his wife on the other side of the aisle in front of an unmanned booth. That way, if someone turned away from the Republican booth, she could approach them from the other side.

GOP State Rep. candidate John O'Neill, having finished his corn, was in campaign mode in front of the GOP booth.

Jack Frank’s opponent John O’Neill was passing out job fair brochures.

Congresswoman Melissa Bean's booth early Saturday evening.

Almost across the aisle was Melissa Bean’s booth. Like last night, it was unstaffed.

In the other building I found the Libertarian Party booth.

The Libertarian Party booth.

People were asked to put glass tokens into jars that represented their opinion of governmental expenditures.

Crystal Lake's Bill Barth was manning the Libertarian Party booth.

There were actually a couple in the jar that said government always spends money wisely. Most, however, were in the “never” or “rarely” jars.

Nancy Shepherdson and Bob Kaempfe were manning the Democratic Party booth.

The Democrats were across the aisle. That’s where I found Mike Tryon’s opponent Bob Kaempfe.

8th State Central Committeewoman Nancy Shepherson was with him.

Jesse White also had a booth.

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White still had enough money in his budget to pay for a County Fair booth, but it wasn’t manned Saturday night.

From the photo I was sent yesterday, I know Congressman Don Manzullo had a booth and was told he was there earlier, but I didn’t see the booth.

The McHenry County Fair continues through Sunday evening.

Nunda Township GOP Snags Politicos for Celebrity Cook Fund Raiser

Missing from the picture, but attending, are Zachary Smith, Chelsi Smith, Bob Halloway, Mark Daniel, James Jirasek, organization Vice Chairman Jon Heideman.

Under Brent Smith’s leadership, the Nunda Township Republican Central Committee has held the first of its monthly meetings.

There was even a commemorative cake.

Now, Nunda Township Republicans are rolling out a fund raising raffle, the prize for which will be a politician to cook dinner for the winner in his or her home.

I bought my ticket in between getting signatures for the “Fair Map” reapportionment constitutional amendment petition at the Crystal Lake Business Expo.

I figured the only woman on the list, Barb Wheeler probably would provide the best meal, so she’s going to learn where the Lakewood home with the tree house is, if I win.

Below is the flyer for the fundraiser:

Sheriff Keith Nygren is sitting at the picnic table in the top shot looking right. His wife Marge is sitting across from him. Standing behind Nygren in that same picture is County Treasurer Bill LeFew. STAR 105 FM radio newsman Stew Cohen is standing next to LeFew, facing the end of the table. YR Jon Heideman, who is running for Republican precinct committeeman in Nunda 19, is in the foreground right looking away from the camera. He was the grill master.

Saturday’s Young Republican Rally

April 07, 2009 By: Cal Skinner Category: Bryan Javor, Erica Poremba, Jim Schlader, Joni Smith, Kay Stanish, McHenry County Young Republicans, Mike Tryon, Rally, Rob Lee, Salvatore Cucinella, Woodstock VFW

A bit late to report on the YR’s VFW rally last Saturday night, but there’s no competition from the local daily papers, so here’s what I have.

First we have Young Republican President Bryan Javor talking to Crystal Lake city council candidate Kay Stanish.

Next you see two Nunda Township candidates posing some YR’s in attendance.

From left to right, they are Nunda Township Trustee candidate Joni Smith, YR Kristin Culley, RY Vice Chair Erica Poremba, YR Membership Chair
Salvatore Cucinella and Nunda Township Trustee and candidate for re-election Jim Schlader.

Finally, here is a photo of State Representative and McHenry County Republican Part Chairman Mike Tryon talking with District 300 school board candidate Rob Lee.

Over 50 attended the rally.

Team Nunda Uses Northwest Herald Insert as Last Shot

April 07, 2009 By: Cal Skinner Category: Barb Wheeler, Bill LeFew, Dan Duffy, Dennis Jagla, Don Kopsell, Ed Dvorak, Jim Slader, Joni Smith, Keith Nygren, Kick Klemm, Lee Jennings, Mary Donner, Mike Tryon, Nunda Township, Tom Palmer

Slim advertising have apparently loosened standards for political inserts at the Northwest Herald.

I can’t remember the campaign (one in the Cary area pops into my mind), but a former managing editor pledged that a political insert would no longer be allowed the day before an election.

The Republicans in Nunda Township, labeling themselves “Team Nunda,”
paid for an insert that I didn’t get, but discovered while reading the paper at the First United Methodist Church of Crystal Lake. The church is located just north of the Algonquin-Nunda Township line, which is Crystal Lake Avenue.

So, it appears the local GOP candidates didn’t waste their money on the Algonquin part of Crystal Lake.

The Team Nunda sign is reproduced on both sides of the three color campaign piece.

Endorsements from

  • former State Senator Dick Klemm
  • current State Senator Dan Duffy
  • State Rep. Mike Tryon
  • McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren
  • McHenry County board members Ed Dvorak, Mary Donner and Barb Wheeler

are featured on one side.

The other side has endorsements from

  • State Senator Pam Althoff
  • McHenry County Treasurer Bill LeFew
  • McHenry County Board Chairman Ken Koehler
  • McHenry County Auditor Pam Palmer
  • McHenry County Coroner Marlene Lantz
  • Bryan Javor, Young Republicans Chairman

And there’s a big

Make Your
Vote Count!

Tuesday, April 7th

on both sides.

Nunda Township Republicans Pamphlet Includes Endorsements

March 23, 2009 By: Cal Skinner Category: Algonquin Township Republican Central Committee, Don Kopsell, Jim Slader, John Heisler, Joni Smith, Lee Jennings, Nunda Township, Nunda Township Republican Central Committee, Tom Palmer

Not only Algonquin Township, but Nunda Township rolled out campaign literature at the Crystal Lake Expo.

Both were found at the Algonquin Township Republican Central Committee booth, which was right on the first aisle of the exhibition.

The booth looked more like a Nunda Township-sponsored one than one put up by the Algonquin Township folks.

That was because all the township trustee candidates had yard signs. You see Nunda Township Trustee candidate Lee Jennings above.

True, you could see a sponsor’s sign on top, but the six Team Nunda red and white yard signs dominated the booth. Here you see Algonquin Township Trustees Linda Lance and Lowell Cutsforth, both running for re-election, at the booth.

But, back to the literature.

There’s a side with “Team Nunda” candidates listed, even the ones who are not opposed. An “Early voting begins March 16th” is highlighted in pale yellow.

The values the Republicans tout as sharing with constituents are

  • Teamwork
  • Managed Growth
  • Fiscal Responsibility
  • Quality Road Maintenance
  • Promoting Programs to Assist Residents

The reason for ignoring the two Democratic Party candidates for township trustee who are on the ballot (not phrased that way, obviously):

We have the experience and desire to maintain a strong and secure township government for Nunda Township residents.

The other side of the folded 8½ by 11 inch sheet of paper has a pitch for voting for Team Nunda, a web site address and another reminder of early voting.

Strangely, Township Supervisor John Heisler is missing from the candidates listed on the sign, but he is in the endorsement list. Township Clerk Bridgett Porvenzano is not mentioned at all. Both are unopposed, but so are Township Highway Commissioner Don Kopsell and Assessor Dennis Jagla and they are on the sign.

There’s a panel of endorsements and supporters surrounding and above the 4 by 4 foot sign that first appeared prior to the primary election.
They include

  • Dick Klemm, former State Senator
  • Dan Duffy, State Senator
  • Mike Tryon, State Representative
  • Keith Nygren, McHenry County Sheriff
  • Ed Dvorak, McHenry County Board
  • Mary Donner, McHenry County Board
  • Barb Wheeler, McHenry County Board
  • Pam Althoff, State Senator
  • Bill LeFew, McHenry County Treasurer
  • Ken Koehler, McHenry County Board Chairman
  • Pam Palmer, McHenry County Auditor
  • Marlene Lantz, McHenry County Coroner
  • John Heisler, Nunda Township Supervisor
  • Bryan Javor, Chairman, McHenry County Young Republicans

For those of you who don’t know much about townships, they perform three basic functions: assessing, road maintenance in unincorporated areas and hand out local welfare, called General Assistance. Crystal Lake is in four townships. The two major ones are Algonquin and Nunda. The horizontal dividing line is Crystal Lake Avenue. The western part of Crystal Lake (west of our home in Lakewood on Meridian Street, in fact, is Grafton Township. The far Northwestern corner is in Woodstock-dominated Dorr Township.)
