Three Congressmen in Crystal Lake Saturday, Peter Roskam Makes First Political Foray to McHenry County Part of His District

February 04, 2012 By: Cal Skinner Category: Al Salvi, D'Andrea, Don Manzullo, Elizabeth Roskam, Joe Walsh, Kathy Salvi, Patroits United, Peter Roskam, Randy Hultgren

What may have been the major political event of the run-up to the March 20th primary election took place Saturday morning at D’Anrea’s Saturday morning.

Politicians everywhere courting voters.

It was the third annual Pro-Life Unity Breakfast put on by Patriots United.

Congressmen Joe Walsh, Peter Roskam and Randy Hultgren

With reapportionment having sliced and diced McHenry County, three of the four United States Congressmen who have present or future ties with the area were in Crystal Lake.  Congressman Don Manzullo, the 19-year U.S Representative in whose present district the banquet hall lies, was in LaSalle County duking it out with freshman Congressman Adam Kinzinger

Elizabeth and Peter Roskam

Making his first foray into the McHenry County part of his 6th congressional district (Algonquin Township) was Peter Roskam.

Roskam, as Deputy Whip in the House Republican Leadership, is in high demand all over the country.

It’s his job to rev up the Republican base and he did a good job of it at the sell-out crowd of almost 300 people.

Peter Roskam renews acquaintances with Kathy Salvi.

With Roskam, his wife Elizabeth, and his former colleague Al Salvi, plus bride Kathy, and yours truly, it was almost old home week for conservatives elected to the Illinois House in 1992.  Only Tom and Ginny Johnson were missing.

I wish my wife had been there, but she down the road at a retreat run by the United Methodist Women of the First United Methodist Church of Crystal Lake.

Peter Roskam

Roskam was the first speaker.

“The Left wants to disarm you.

“It want’s to convince you that can’t make a difference,” Roskam told the crowd.

He pounded on President Barack Obama’s denigration of the Conscience Clause.

He cited Obama’s controversial speech at the University of Notre Dame in which Obama famously said, “We can agree around those issues of conscience.”

“He has not just moved away from (from that position), but he is “thumping us on our chests saying

‘We’re going to jab you in the chest.  What are you going to do about it?’

“That is a provocation that cannot go unanswered!”

Peter Roskam

Roskam was referring to the announcement that the Catholic Church’s hospitals, universities and other non-church institutions would have to provide birth control in their health insurance in contravention to Church teachings.

Roskam recommended a book by Britisher Paul Johnson, “A History of the American People.”

Summarizing, Roskam told of the author’s comparison of the leadership in England and America during the Revolutionary War.

American had “all of the A-Team…unbelievable gifted people.

“But was unique was their ability to come together.”

Roskam said conservatives have to be able to do that this year, because “the most important thing is the people who are in charge at the top.”

He was on a rhetorical roll.

“Our choice is to recede (or go forward).

“It’s just too big (an opportunity) to squander.  We can’t squander the Freedom God has given us…the opportunity (to keep) economic freedom, political freedom and economic opportunity.

“That’s what this crowd is all about.

“Thank you for what you’re doing in these sharp-elbowed times.

“We need you to work together (and not to be defensive about being a conservative.”

There was much more, of course.  I try to get to it in the coming days.

A Barack Obama Halloween mask.

Wear the mask of your favorite or least favorite politician, suggests State Rep. candidate Barb Wheeler with regard to her October 22nd fund raiser hosted by her brother Al Salvi and her sister-in-law Kathy Salvi.

The event will be held at JJ Twigs Pizza & Pub at 1200 North Main Street in Wauconda.

The date is October 22nd.

The event is being billed as a

Mask-or-Aid

No specific donation is requested.

It appears to be a “give what you can” event.

It should be interesting to see what Lake County politicians attend.

Daily Herald Reports Long Grove Village President Maria Rodriguez Considering Taking on Melissa Bean

August 25, 2009 By: Cal Skinner Category: 8th Congressional District, Kathy Salvi, Long Grove, Maria Rodriguez, Melissa Bean, National Republican Congressional Committee

I have long thought that the only way to beat 8th District Democratic Party Congresswoman Melissa Bean was with a woman.

That’s one reason I supported Kathy Salvi in her 2006 attempt to win the Republican primary election. She lost to Barrington’s David McSweeney, who lost to Bean in the fall election. Moderate Party candidate Bill Scheurer was also on the ballot. The results in percentage terms follow:

  • Bean 50.9%
  • McSweeney 44%
  • Scheurer 5.1%

Note that Bean won be about seven percentage points. That does not prove that Salvi could have won, but the gender issue would not have been there with woman versus woman.

The rationale behind my advocacy of a female candidate is that since 1966 when I ran five percentage points behind a Chicago bank secretary for McHenry County Treasurer, I have observed women having a five percentage point advantage over men in the Northwest suburbs.

Now, the Daily Herald has an article by Russell Lissau reporting that Long Grove Village President Maria Rodriguez has been to Washington, D.C., to talk to the National Republican Congressional Committee.

Those are folks who can make sure significant sums of money get allocated to an 8th District.

Rodriguez is Long Grove’s Village President.

The Green Party is running Bill Scheurer in the 8th District.

Part 4- Notables at the Illinois Republican Party Convention

June 12, 2008 By: Cal Skinner Category: Bill Brady, Bob VandenBosch, Dan Eglar, Demetra DeMonte, Jim Durkin, Kathy Salvi, Ken Law

This is the fourth part of how I occupied my time at the 2008 Illinois Republican Party Convention in Decatur the end of last week.

Right after we left the McHenry County Republican Party caucus, we spotted the head of the John McCain campaign in 2002 and 2008, Jim Durkin, in the hall. I got this shot.

We went looking for more food that we got at the Comfort Inn and found the brunch was sponsored by State Senator Bill Brady. I figure if he was going to pop for some good scrambled eggs, I should take his photo. Here he is talking to two men whose names I would be happy to put in the article, if anyone will identify them.

Although like most newspaper reporters, former Chicago Tribune Springfield reporter, who handled Bill Brady’s press for his gubernatorial campaign in 2006 was found talking to Lee Newspapers report Ken Law.

Afterwards, we found Kathy Salvi again, this time talking to a woman who turned out to be Demetra DeMonte. I prevailed upon them for a photo.

The Rev. Bob VandenBosch from the Quentin Road Baptist Church in Lake County was present to give the invocation. Would you believe he was bold enough to invoke the name of Jesus Christ? Of course, if you knew him, you would know he would be that bold.

Part 3 – Notables at the Illinois Republican Convention

June 11, 2008 By: Cal Skinner Category: Andy McKenna, Decatur Convention Center, Gene Dawson, Illinois Republican Party, Kathy Salvi, Mike Tryon

I haven’t mentioned how wet it was in Decatur last weekend for the Illinois Republican Party Convention.

Since there were pans collecting water on the convention floor, it seems appropriate.

It was pouring Saturday morning as delegates were arriving.

The next morning Republican Party State Chairman Andy McKenna spoke to our McHenry County Republican caucus.

Platform committee chairman Gene Dawson, the Barrington Township Republican Committeeman, who is also the 8th congressional district State Central Committeeman, explained the proposed 12-page platform. I asked him if it would be posted on the web site and he said it would.

McHenry County State Rep. Mike Tryon qualifies as a notable. I got his photo, but, for some reason didn’t take them of State Senator Pam Althoff and McHenry County Board Chairman Ken Koehler. Sorry about that, guys.

Kathy Salvi, whom I wanted the chance to vote for on the convention floor spoke to us, informing us that she had agreed to accept the offer of the woman the committee had recommended be selected Republican National Committeewoman, Demetra DeMonte, to be her deputy. It’s a good fit since DeMonte is from near Peoria and Salvi is from Lake County.

GOP Chairman Andy McKenna Lashes Jim Thompson and Bob Schillerstrom

June 08, 2008 By: Cal Skinner Category: Andy McKenna, Carol Smith Donovan, Dan Cronin, Dave Millner, Demetra DeMonte, DuPage County Republican Party, George Ryan, Jim Thompson, Kathy Salvi, Kirk Dillard, Mary Jo Arndt, RTA Sales Tax

A dramatic declaration of independence was issued by Illinois Republican Party Chairman Andy McKenna in Decatur on Saturday at the GOP state convention.

McKenna tongue lashed both former Governor Jim Thompson and either DuPage County Board Chairman Robert Schillerstrom or DuPage GOP Party Chairman Dan Cronin.

Taking on Thompson’s continuing show of support of incarcerated former Republican Governor George Ryan, McKenna said,

It disappoints me with a former governor lobbies the president to pardon a former governor.

No names were used, but there was certainly no doubt about the identities of the former governors to whom McKenna was referring. Thompson did not attend the convention.

McKenna then took on either DuPage County Board Chairman Robert Schillerstrom or County Republican Party Chairman and State Senator Dan Cronin for his pushing DuPage County State Senators Dan Cronin, who is DuPage County party chairman, Kirk Dillard, who just retired as party chairman and newly-elected David Millner to vote

  • to double the sales tax for the Regional Transportation Authority for the collar counties from one-fourth of a percentage point to one-half a percentage point, plus
  • impose of a new quarter of one percent sales tax to be used for law enforcement, as well as transportation purposes, as originally was envisioned.

State Senator Carol Pankau and Randy Hultgren were the only DuPage County state senators to vote against the 300% increase in the RTA sales tax.

It disappoints me when a county chairman goes to Springfield to lobby for a sales tax increase,”

McKenna said in his speech to the convention. (Since Cronin is there all the time in his role as state senator, I tend to think McKenna was talking about Schillerstrom.)

McKenna, as state party chairman, had openly and vociferously criticized Democrats for proposing the tripling of the RTA sales tax in the collar counties.

Cronin’s, Dillard’s and Millner’s flip to the tax hike side of the roll call in order to obtain more money for DuPage County State’s Attorney Joe Birkett and, presumably, the DuPage County Sheriff’s Department, undermined McKenna’s effort to differential between the Republican and Democratic Parties.

The decision by the tax hiking DuPage County Republicans obviously motivated McKenna to risk a major schism with the county whose politicians dominated legislative politics for so long under Senate President Pate Philip and House Minority Leader Lee Daniels.

DuPage County GOP Chairman Cronin was reportedly quite angered and his delegations behavior later in the convention may have been pay back for the criticism.

There was a floor effort to reverse a committee’s nomination of Pekin’s Demetra DeMonte as Republican National Committeewoman.

The incumbent Mary Jo Arndt of DuPage County had endorsed Chicago’s Carol Smith Donovan for the office. Former congressional candidate Kathy Salvi was also seeking the office, but after she lost to DeMonte, DeMonte agreed to appoint Salvi deputy national committee woman.

During a floor fight, supporters of Donovan from DuPage County were yelling,

“Roll call! Roll call!”

After the vote, which DeMonte won 358-263, I noticed the seats of the DuPage County delegation were empty.

I assume they walked out.

If Schillerstrom was the target of McKenna’s wrath, his effusive praise of subsequent speaker Joe Birkett seemed a bit strange.

Birkett was every bit as much in favor of tripling the RTA sales tax to finance his office as Schillerstrom.

On top right, Illinois Republican State Central Committee Chairman Andy McKenna can be seen listening to the McHenry County Central Committee caucus before Saturday’s state convention in Decatur. The smaller picture of Jim Thompson was taken at the John McCain Addison rally in February. The two women are, on the right, Demetra DeMonte, Illinois’ new Republican National Committeewoman, and, to her right, Kathy Salvi, who ran second to Dave McSweeney in the 2006 8th congressional district primary election. McSweeney supported Salvi in her national committeewoman campaign. DuPage County State’s Attorney Joe Birkett can be seen to the left.
