Political Parties at the McHenry County Fair

August 07, 2012 By: Cal Skinner Category: Democrat, Democratic Party, Ersel Schuster, Jim Young, Libertarian, Libertarian Party, McHenry County, McHenry County Democrats, McHenry County Fair, McHenry County Republican Party, Republican, Republican Party

On the way to look for politics at the McHenry County Fair, I walked past this water fan. In the 90 degree heat, it was appreciated by all but those of use who wear glasses.

There were three political party booths at the McHenry County Fair:

  • Republicans
  • Democrats
  • Libertarians

McHenry County Board member Ersel Schuster was at the Republican Party booth Wednesday afternoon. Andrew Gasser stopped by.

Sometimes the Republican Party booth was manned (or womaned, as is the case above).

Sometimes it wasn’t.

When a friend of McHenry County Blog took this photo on another day, the GOP booth was empty, except for posters and pamphlets.

No indication that there is a Presidential election this year in the GOP booth.

Libertarian Party stalwart Jim Young, who ran for State Rep. once against Rosemary Kurtz, was at the booth.

Libertarians had a booth again, too, even though the party has no candidates on the ballot this year.

While the GOP booth had not indication that Mitt Romney was running for office, neither does the Democratic Party have a poster for President Obama. Perhaps someone will be kind enough to identify who is at the table.

The final party was the Democratic Party of McHenry County.

It appears that the GOP is not the only part with insufficient county fair resources.

Sometimes it was unmanned, too.

Franks Should Have Filed His Power Grab Petitions by Now

August 06, 2012 By: Cal Skinner Category: County Executive, Jack Franks, McHenry County Fair

Here’s the petition that was being passed.

The courthouse closed at 4:30.

That was the deadline for 500 petition signatures to be filed with the Circuit Clerk’s Office.

(Don’t ask me why it wasn’t to be filed in the County Clerk’s Office. Some difference in the law undoubtedly and Jack Franks’ law firm surely did the research to point him toward the right office.)

When last seen by a friend of McHenry County Blog, the Democratic Party’s only McHenry County State Rep. was seeking voters to sign his petition to hold a referendum in front of his tent.

A friend of McHenry County Blog caught Jack Franks in front of his tent waiting for voters to approach for their signatures.

Earlier, two of his employees were soliciting signatures at locations not approved in the contract his campaign signed with the McHenry County Fair Board, for which they were admonished.

This Jack Franks’ petition passer was not staying where the County Fair contract said he should be.

Undoubtedly Franks filed several times the number of petitions signatures needed to get the referendum on the ballot.

That number was 500.

People were being told by solicitors that signing would end cronyism in McHenry County.

When I heard that report, all I could think that if Franks were elected County Executive, it would shift cronyism from the Republican side of the political spectrum to the Democratic Party side.

Others suggested harsher consequences. Maybe they will add them in the comment section. (No personal attacks, please.)

Franks filed 169 petition pages yesterday afternoon.

Lobbying on Abortion at the McHenry County Fair

August 06, 2012 By: Cal Skinner Category: 1st Way Pregnancy Support Services, Abortion, McHenry County Citizens for Choice, McHenry County Fair, Mike Bissett, Paula Yensen

As last year, the McHenry County Fair had representatives from the Pro-Choice and the Pro-Life side of the abortion issue.

The McHenry County Citizens for Choice had a booth with a placard declaring, “Pro-Faith, Pro-Family, Pro-Choice.”  It was next to the Tupperware booth.

The Pro-Choicers, represented by the McHenry County Citizens for Choice, had their usual booth and the Pro-Lifers had three booths, the same as last year.

Peter’s Net returned to McHenry County’s Fair with it virtually life size models of a developing baby.

Visiting the Pro-Choice booth, as seen in the photo below, is McHenry County Democratic Party Chairman Mike Bissett and his wife, McHenry County Board member Paula Yensen.

Peter’s Net, the organization that gave fits last year to an organization across the aisle trying to capture teenagers email addresses in return for a chance for a scholarship again graced the McHenry County Fairgrounds.  This is also one of the Pro-Life organizations the Lake County Fair tried to ban.

1st Way Pregnancy Support Services had a corner booth.

1st Way Pregnancy Support Services, a crisis pregnancy center based in Johnsburg, had a booth again, too.

The biggest Pro-Life booth was sponsored by the

So did the Catholic Diocese of Rockford.  It appeared to be three booths wide.

It even said, “Vote Pro-Life.”

McHenry County Farmers Due for Federal Drought Help

August 03, 2012 By: Cal Skinner Category: Crop Insurance, David Christensen, Farm, Farmer, McHenry County Fair, Parade, Tractor

A press release from McHenry County:

McHenry County declared a contiguous disaster county by the USDA

WOODSTOCK, IL – In response to the current drought conditions, the McHenry County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) has reached out to the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA), the United States Farm Service Agency (FSA), the Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA), surrounding counties, and the McHenry County Farm Bureau.

McHenry County received a “contiguous” agriculture disaster declaration this week from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Part of the McHenry County Fair’s Tractor Parade.

The primary effect of this declaration is to address the crop loss by relieving some of the burden of the crop insurance premium.

For farmers who do have insurance, the USDA announced on Wednesday, August 1 that crop insurance companies have agreed to provide a short grace period for farmers on insurance premiums for 2012.

To help producers who may have cash flow problems due to natural disasters, USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack sent a letter to crop insurance companies asking them to voluntarily defer the accrual of any interest until November 1, 2012, on unpaid spring crop premiums by producers. To assist the crop insurance companies, USDA will not require crop insurance companies to pay uncollected producer premiums until one month later.

For farmers who do not have insurance, the FSA will provide emergency loans to help producers recover from production and physical losses due to drought, flooding, other natural disasters, or quarantine.

Emergency loans may be made to farmers and ranchers who own or operate land located in a county declared by the President as a disaster area or designated by the Secretary of Agriculture as a disaster area or quarantine area.

For physical losses only, the FSA Administrator may authorize emergency loan assistance.

Emergency loan funds may be used to: restore or replace essential property; pay all or part of production costs associated with the disaster year; pay essential family living expenses; reorganize the farming operation; and refinance certain debts.

For more information about FSA emergency loans, please contact David Petersen in the FSA Woodstock Services Center at 815-338-0444.

I called McHenry County EMA Director David Christensen for some clarification and he told me because Boone County has been designated that since we are next door we get designated, too.

Because the declaration is only by the Secretary of Agriculture, rather than by the President, local farmers are not eligible for grants.

With McHenry County Emergency Management Agency Director David Christensen’s having mention snow removal assistance from the Federal government (what is that all about anyway?) and the temperature being in the high 90′s, I thought it was time for a reminder of winter. This was taken on Main Street in Crystal Lake.

He said that happens with snow storm relief, too.

Seen in Downtown Ringwood.

Look what the Crystal Lake Tea Party just sent out:

In the spirit of American Patriots, the Crystal Lake Tea Party and Huntley Area Tea Party are collaborating to share resources and staff a booth at the McHenry County Fair.

With November (and October early voting) elections fast approaching, all of us are looking at various ways in order to educate our voters and promote our Tea Party values.

The Fair runs from Wednesday, August 1st, through Sunday, August 5th, and will require booth staffing from 10 am to 10 pm each of those days, except for the early close on Sunday.

If you’ve never had the experience of meeting neighbors and friends at this type of venue, let us assure you that it is a TON of fun!

People who attend the Fair are in a happy mood to begin with, so half your work is already done!

We’d love to make sure that we’re able to accommodate all volunteers with a two-hour time slot of their first choice, so please get back to me ASAP so we can reserve your time.

If you’d like to bring a personal friend with you to help keep you company, just let us know.

Our Tea Party people always work on the premise of the more, the merrier!

McHenry County Fair Board Avoids Bad Publicity Engendered by Lake County Fair’s Initial Refusal to Allow Pro-Life Booths with Gestation Models

July 20, 2012 By: Cal Skinner Category: Lake County Fair, Lake County Right to Life, McHenry County Citizens for Choice, McHenry County Fair, Peter's Net, Pro-Life

Last year Pro-Life forces had a powerful presence at the McHenry County Fair.

A new group called Peter’s Net had large models of gestation.

Models presented by Peter’s Net.

The models were so eye-catching that a commercial booth across the aisle which seemed to be trying to snag teen emails in exchange for a chance at a scholarship (reminding me of the odds at getting the top prize in most carnival games) complained to the point of getting another space.

I guess life is more interesting that college.

A larger booth consisting of several spaces also had models of developing babies.

These models were at another, larger Pro-Life exhibit.

When I got home from vacation, I read an article by Robert McCoppin in the Chicago Tribune.

Robert McCoppin’s Chicago Tribune article about the Lake County Fair Board’s attempt to kick Pro-Life booths out of the Fairgrounds. Intervention by attorney Peter Breen, who spoke at the McHenry County Pro-Life Pig Roast changed the Board’s decision.

He told of the problems Peter’s Net and Lake County Right to Life had in getting booths at the Lake County Fair.

A shortage of vendor space, don’t you know?

Even though the Lake County Right to Life organization had been there thirty-seven years!

The newcomer, Peter’s Net, had only been participating three years.

No intention of political censorship, of course, said President Kelli Kepler-Yarc.

The McHenry County Fair Board dodged this publicity bullet after initially attempting to take the same action as the Lake County Fair Board.

With Pro-Lifers in the ascendency, it seems allies of Pro-Choicers are afraid of facing Pro-Lifers in the public forum.

It should be noted that Pro-Choice folks had a booth sponsored by the McHenry County Citizens for Choice.

The McHenry County Citizens for Choice had this booth last year at the McHenry County Fair.

The McHenry County Fair – Political Angles

August 06, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: Barb Wheeler, Brent Smith, Don Manzullo, Eric Peterson, Glenda Miller, Jack Franks, Jim Young, Joe Walsh, Libertarian, Libertarian Party, McHenry County Auditor, McHenry County Citizens for Choice, McHenry County Democats, McHenry County Democratic Central Committee, McHenry County Fair, McHenry County Republican Party, McHenry County Republicans, McHenry County Reublican Central Committee, McHenry County Right To Carry Association, McHenry County Right-to-Life, McHenry County Sheriff, McHenry County Sheriff's Department, McHenry County Sportsman Association, Pam Palmer, Peter's Net, Pro-Choice, Pro-Life, Toby Levin

While the teen were exploring other parts of the McHenry County Fair on Friday, I went looking for things political.

Democratic Party State Rep. Jack Franks’ tent was first.  It was closest to the free parking.

Jack Franks staffer Parker Happ mans the Jack Franks tent, smiling as he did last year when my photo was good enough to end up on his Facebook’s front page.

Then,  I saw the Sheriff’s Department’s Crime Stoppers Trailer.

This Sheriff’s Department trailer was parked behind the arena.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s booth was at the front of the first building I entered, although Sheriff Keith Nygren had not yet arrived.

The Sheriff’s Department has a double booth just as one enters one of the display buildings.

McHenry County Citizens for Choice was way around the corner.

Marian Michaels, Dee Many and Toby Levin were staffing/visiting the McHenry County Citizens for Choice booth.

The McHenry County Republican Party booth was down the aisle to the right. My second time around I found Jack Franks’ staffer conversing with the folks behind the table.

Eric Peterson, Glenda Miller and Pam Palmer talk with Jack Franks’ staffer Parker Happ.

I found the Sheriff’s Department had a second booth location to the right of the main one.

This McHenry County Sheriff’s booth was unmanned when I walked by.

In the next building, the Libertarian Party booth was the first I saw.

Jim Young, who ran for State Rep. as a Libertarian, was asking people to put pennies into the jar which best represented their beliefs about the national debt.

Into which jar would you put a penny supplied by the Libertarian Party?

Most pennies were in the “Cut Spending” jar.

Next door was the best political story.

The negative reaction of a modeling agency, which was across the aisle, and a County Fair Official’s reported reaction to a complaint was the best story I found.  The complaining booth workers got another location.

The booth was called “Peter’s Net.” Those in it were clearly Catholics and they were explaining how Catholics were Pro-Life.

There were models of how large a baby was at various lengths of gestitation. This man was closely examining the part of the display at the early end of pregnancy.

Here’s a closer look at the models.

I particularly like the baby in God’s hands.

The booth renter across the aisle, described as a “modeling agency” complained about the medical models to Fair Officials. One came and, I’m told, said that the display might not be allowed next year.

The models at the other Pro-Life booth.

Since I vividly remember a similar display from 2000 at the McHenry County Right-To-Life organization, I have a hard time understanding such logic, assuming the story that reached my ears was correct.

It certainly makes no economic sense for the Fair, since another Catholic group, renting three or four spaces–as many as the Sheriff’s Department–also had in utero models.

Maybe it was the message on the button saying, “It’s a child, not a choice” that bothered the folks across the aisle or maybe the models were drawing too much attention from the young girls the complaining booth was targeting.

Just around the corner was the McHenry County Democratic Central Committee’s booth.

Terry Kappel and John Darger were staffing the Democrats booth.

They had an intimidating American history quiz that they were encouraging people to take.  I was told Jack Franks wouldn’t take it.

This “Hands Off my Medicare” sign was on the side of the Democrats’ booth.

I hesitated, read the questions on the front page and figured by 7th and 8th grade American history classes would stand me in good stead.  Then I started checking off the best answer.  I did find until I got to the national debt question.  It asked when the first debt ceiling had been passed.  That was not in any of the American history classes I took.  I won’t ruin the quiz. Suffice is to say that was my only wrong answer.

As I continued my political tour of the McHenry County Fair, I found a second large Pro-Life booth.

“Life is Sacred” is the largest print one sees as one approaches this booth from the south.

Young girls were looking at a display of baby booties and shoes called “Little Soles.”

“Little Soles” is the title of this Pro-Life display..

This is the other booth in which I found the in utero models seen above.

There is also a big banner proclaiming “Life Is Sacred” with a Bible quote.

The booth tee shirt.

Right across the aisle was the booth of the McHenry County Sportsman’s Association and the McHenry County Right to Carry Association.

With Illinois’ being the last state in the union where individuals are not allowed to carry firearms to protect themselves, the petition signatures gathered in past years may have been the reason that Jack Franks’ flipped from being opposed to being favor.

Barbara Wheeler, the only Republican candidate to have announced for the 64th State Representative District, talks with Anthony Lopez President of the McHenry County Sportsman’s Association at the booth his group and the McHenry County Right to Carry Association sponsored at the County Fair.

President Anthony Lopez was standing out front talking to Barb Wheeler, who was helping staff the booth. His wife Laura Rakers was behind the table with Richard Pere.

I went looking for Congressman Joe Walsh’s outpost.

Erin Westphal drew tent staffing duty for Congressman Joe Walsh.  At the Wauconda Town Hall Meeting, she was one bringing the microphone to those who want to ask questions or make statements.

It was on the midway in a corner tent.

I doubled back to the building with the Sheriff’s display in hopes of finding Sheriff Keith Nygren and was rewarded by his presence.

Sheriff Keith Nygren talking to two members of his staff.

I made another circuit and found Congressman Don Manzullo’s booth. Former Wonder Lake resident Marilyn Davis was behind the table.

Kathleen Davis was staffing Congressman Don Manzullo’s booth.

As I left the building, Nunda Township Republican Chairman Brent Smith and Sheriff Nygren were having a conversation.

On the way out, I saw John O’Neill, an announced candidate for McHenry County Board staffing the Ray Chevrolet tent.

McHenry County Fair Opens Wednesday

August 03, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: County Fair, McHenry County Fair, Skinner's Amusements

You can see rides from Skinner's Amusements behind the sign. My Skinner family--the newcomers--are not related to Maurice's offspring, who run the carnival.

Today’s the first day of the McHenry County Fair.

I’ll do my usual political tour of the Fair sometime this week and share the results with you.
