A Letter from Libertarian Party Chair Dave Brady and More Crystal Lake TEA Party Pictures

Illinois and McHenry County Libertarian Party Chair Dave Brady, who lives in Wonder Lake, sent the following press release about the Crystal Lake TEA Party. (All photos can be enlarged by clicking on them.)

Let us just say that the Crystal Lake Tea Party was an overwhelming success. This event had 550 people stretched down route 14 making their corporate voice heard loud and clear.

It started at 11:45 and ended at 1:15 and we were met by WIND radio broadcasting from our location for a about 30 minutes. (This is WIND Senior Marketing Consultant Chuck Barham. In the background, you can see former State Senator Jack Schaffer and McHenry County Republican Central Committee Treasurer Fred Wickham.)

The focus on this rally hovered around the oppressive tax the federal and state governments impose us it’s citizens, while bloating the size and scope of government with no shame or apology.

While there the Norwest Herald tracked me down and in addition to the above quotes they also got the admonitions to move this focus and purpose to the ballot box and show our elected officials we are done with this abusive tax system.

As a pleasant surprise I fielded a phone call from USA Today or US News and World Report (it was so noisy it was hard to tell) telling me that heard that the LP Illinois came up with the concept, and even though others may have high-jacked it from us how I feel about the event.

I told him plainly that high jacked or not was not important. the important thing is that people came together with a solid purpose to tell our government leaders that we have had it with their oppressive and abusive tax policies, and again, the increase of size and scope of government.

The tea party concept is the outcome of their own actions.

And not to be forgotten, I gave credit to

  • Mike Folgelsanger,
  • Josh Hanson,
  • Chris Jenner,
  • John Kramer &
  • Kent McMIllan

for their hard work.

See Libertarians give credit when credit is due for hard work, unlike other groups stepping on each other claiming credit for personal glory.

If I missed anyone I apologize.

Thank you Jim Young and Bill Baruth for being there with me.

Those of you who couldn’t be there remember you are doing a good job as well at your work place supporting a struggling economy.

Thanks All.

Libertarians Encourage Participation in TEA Parties

April 10, 2009 By: Cal Skinner Category: Illinois Libertarian Party, Libertarian Party, McHenry County Libertarian Party

I received this press release from Dave Brady of Wonder Lake, the president of the Illinois and McHenry Libertarian Parties.

Libertarians Urge TEA Party Participation

McHenry County Libertarian Party is urging McHenry residents to join millions of libertarians and other advocates of economic freedom at one of thousands of “Tea Parties” being held on April 15.

The “tea party” concept started with the Libertarian Party of Illinois (LPI)who began organizing a 2009 Tax Day ‘Boston Tea Party’ in Chicago back in December of 2008 and created a Facebook group for it on Feb. 10, 2009.

“Nine days later, CNBC’s Rick Santelli, broadcasting from the floor of the Chicago stock exchange, popularized the concept.

“Americans agree with the Libertarian Party that taxes and spending are out of control, and that bailouts and nationalizing industries destroys freedom and prosperity.

“The Libertarian Party is the only party supporting shrinking budgets, lowering tax burdens, eliminating deficits and getting government out of the way of recovery,” said David Brady.

“We will be joining other liberty minded McHenry residents for a demonstration at the intersection of Main Street and Route 14 in Crystal Lake between 12 noon and 1 pm on April 15. We plan to be on the southeast corner on the public sidewalk around the Home State.”

Nunda Township Open Space Referendum

April 05, 2009 By: Cal Skinner Category: Brian Weaver, Cathy Bergan Schmidt, McHenry County Libertarian Party, Nunda Neighbors for Open Space, Nunda Township, Open Space, Shallow Aquifer

In 2006, there were two open space referendums on the ballot in Nunda Township.

One passed and the other narrowly lost.

You can see the parcels that were identified two years below (click to enlarge this image or any other):

The one to authorize the open space district passed by 132 votes. 51.5% to 48.5%. That was the easy one.

The referendum asking whether voters were willing to pony up the money—$20 million—failed by 27 votes. 49.7% to 50.3%.

Supporters organizing themselves for the campaign as “Nunda Neighbors for Open Space” obviously thought the vote was close enough to try again. This time for $15 million.

Their web site estimates that a $350,000 home would pay $63 annually for the 20-year period the bonds would be outstanding.

The issue re-surfaced at the Nunda Township meeting last year when Democratic Party Chair Kathy Bergen Schmidt made the motion to put the funding referendum on the ballot. Brian Weaver, who ran in the Republican primary for township assessor, seconded the motion. According to the comment left below by Schmidt, the vote to put the referendum on the ballot was unanimous. She reports that all of the “Team Nunda” candidates attended the meeting.

That motion obligated the township to place the issue on the ballot.

The two Democrats running for trustee endorse the proposal, while the opposition Republican slate —Team Nunda— isn’t:

“Team Nunda remains neutral on the Open Space Referendum to sincerely support the choice made by the Nunda Township voters rather than promote any personal agendas.”

It appears the GOP slate is trying to put a little distance between themselves and the tax hike effort.

Meanwhile McHenry County Libertarians are putting on a campaign against the referendum.

An article on the party blog says, in part,

“While unemployment is skyrocketing, the stock market crashing and people worry from day to day about finances our leaders close their eyes to reality and suggest more taxes. Some people say, ‘but Dave, it’s only $$$ a year, what’s the big deal?’ I answer that with this question … ‘Ok , ____, give me a tax number that is enough then.’”

Endorsing the referendum, according to proponents’ direct mail piece, are

  • McHenry County Conservation Foundation
  • The Land Conservancy
  • Boone Creek Watershed Alliance
  • USDA Natural Resources Conservation District
  • The Sierra Club
  • McHenry County Audubon Society
  • Friends of the Fox
  • Environmental Defenders of McHenry County
  • Bull Valley Association
  • McHenry County Farm Bureau
  • McHenry County Soil & Water Conservation District
  • Open Lands Project
  • McHenry County Board member Barb Wheeler
  • McHenry County Board member Kathy Bergen Schmidt
  • State Senator Pam Althoff

Below is the additional information that proponents have mailed out:

The pitches being made include one that more open space will preserve shallow aquifer rainwater recharge areas, as well as curtailing demand in the area. (Remember to click on the image to make it large enough to read.)

Another is that it is cheaper to buy the land and pay the cost of its purchase over 20 years than to subsidize the houses that otherwise would be built on the properties. The argument is made that it costs 31 cents for every tax dollar collected to provide services to open space, but $1.11 for each tax dollar to service homes.

Nunda Neighbors for Open Space Committee members are Ders Anderson, Crystal Lake

  • Nancy Schietzelt, Crystal Lake
  • Michael Kutnick, McHenry
  • Lori McConville, Crystal Lake
  • John MacDonald, McHenry
  • Louise Reinier, Crystal Lake
  • Tom and Carolyn Lillegard, Crystal Lake

The committee argues that with the depressed price of real estate and the low interest rates, this is the best time to buy land.

Other Illinois townships buying open space:

  • Dundee Township in Kane County – 862 acres
  • Compton Township in Kane County – 781 acres
  • Libertyville Township in Lake County – 1,500 acres
  • Homer Township in Will County – 200 acres

Wonder Lake Resident to head Illinois Libertarian Party

October 08, 2008 By: Cal Skinner Category: Dave Brady, Illinois Libertarian Party, McHenry County Libertarian Party

Who says there’s not upward mobility in Illinois politics?

Wonder Lake resident David Brady, chairman of the McHenry County Libertarian Party has been named head of the state party Sunday afternoon.

The party’s press release follows:

Libertarians Elect Brady, As Chair, Illinois Libertarian Party

The Libertarian Party of Illinois elected David A. Brady as Chair at their yearly meeting held in Oakbrook near Chicago yesterday afternoon.

“Good things are to come in the next two years”, said Brady, a 45-year-old resident from Wonder Lake in McHenry County. “We know the issues in our state, counties and towns. We accept the challenge and refuse to fail.”

In his statements during the meeting Brady said that he is committed to Rejuvenating, Revitalizing, Reorganizing and Repackaging the Illinois Libertarian Party. “We have the right message for our times. We need more messengers to stand up and say; Here I am, send me!”

In addition to this position, Brady is the Chair of the McHenry County Libertarian Party and a member of the Libertarian National Committee. Brady has also been the former Eastern Vice-Chair & Chair of the Libertarian Party of Pennsylvania. Brady is an 18 year veteran of the US Armed Forces, to include service with NATO.

Founded in 1971, the Libertarian Party is the third largest political party in the state and the nation, with over 500 elected and appointed officials currently serving in office nationwide. Like the Founding Fathers, Libertarians believe that you have a God-given, inalienable right to conduct your life as you see fit, without interference, so long as you respect the rights and property of others. As a result, Libertarians favor a small, responsible government. Libertarians agree with the traditional Republican values of economic freedom and low taxes, and with the Democratic values of personal freedom and civil liberties.

For more information about the Libertarian Party of Illinois, the public is invited to contact the LPI at www.lpillinois.com or at 800-735-1776.
