Why Cutting and Pasting Doesn’t Always Work

May 18, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: Education, Education Reform, McHenry County Repubican Central Committee, McHenry County Republicans, Memorial, Mike Tryon, Strike, Teacher, Teacher Negotiations, Teacher Strike

Yesterday, I took from the McHenry County Republican web site something State Rep. Mike Tryon had put up about educational reform.

It contained “Talking Points for Educational Reform.”

Undoubtedly handed out to all Republican members of the Illinois House.

The new educational reform bill does nothing to deter strikes by teachers outside of Chicago. This is a picture of Huntley teachers meeting durring their strike.

One point, however, does not apply outside of Chicago:

“Averting teacher strikes is another key component of these reforms.”

There is a requirement for an extraordinary majority to authorize a strike in Chicago, but not impediment elsewhere in Illinois can be found in the bill.

Oops.

Message of the Day – A Memorial

When I saw the way the snow looked on the Vietnam War Veterans Memorial in front to the McHenry County Administrative Building, I knew I had to publish it sometime.

It is appropriate that you see it this Veterans Day.

What does the snow on the McHenry County Vietnam Veterans Memorial say to you?

Woodstock’s Memorial Day Ceremony Moved Indoors

With the gully washer McHenry County had Monday, it is no surprise that the concurrent Memorial Day Parade was canceled.

Not canceled was the ceremony performed by the Woodstock Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Woodtock VRW members lined up in front of the Opera House.

It appears taps were blown outside the Opera House.

The photo of the VFW members and the stunning one above of a memorial display above were taken by a member of the Mike Mahon for McHenry County Sheriff staff.

Mahon, his family and friends were all set to march in the parade, but had to settle for the picture in front of the Civil War Memorial that you see above.

Message of the Day – Grief

Vanessa Tobey Memorial on Huntley Road south of Waterford Cut in Crystal Lake the night of April 13, 2010.

As I was driving to Huntley for Grafton Township’s Annual Town Meeting, I noticed a memorial on Huntley Road south of Waterford Cut.

That’s apparently near where the place where the car crash that killed Vanessa Tobey took place.

I was a bit late, so I didn’t stop and turn around to take a picture.

On my way back to Crystal Lake a bit after ten o’clock, I saw a couple of cars and some young people standing around the memorial.

I stopped and asked if I could take a picture. A couple were shy, so I asked if I could just photograph their legs.

I asked if they were from Arlington Heights and they said they were.

What you see is the top of the McHenry County Vietnam War Memorial.

It seems appropriate to feature it today. The photo was taken yesterday.
