State’s Attorney Lou Bianchi’s 2012 Fund Raiser a Sell-Out

August 24, 2012 By: Cal Skinner Category: Festa Italiana, Jim Harrison, Lake County Sheriff, Lou Bianchi, Mark Curran, McHenry County Sheriff, McHenry County State's Attorney, Mike Mahon, Zane Seipler

“You made it possible” [to run unopposed after withstanding two criminal trials],” McHenry County State’s Attorney Lou Bianchi told supporters at his fund raiser.

Last year’s fund raiserfrom McHenry County State’s Attorney Lou Bianchi was a victory celebration.

It was also the day he announced his candidacy for a third term in office.

It came within days after his second criminal case was dismissed without having to put on any evidence.

Judge Joseph McGraw had rendered his second directed verdict and 300 or so of Bianchi’s loyal supporters gathered at the Boulder Ridge Country Club for a big party.

This summer’s Festa Italiana was even bigger.

Seats were hard to find this year.

People who came after six had trouble finding seats.

There was a festive mood at the Festa Italiana.

Some estimated that the number attending was one-third more than in 2011–around 400.

After the speech, people again started to meet, greet, exchange gossip and information.

It was a consolidation of power party.

Lou Bianchi addresses the Boulder Hill fund raiser crowd.

Indeed, in his speech to the crowd Bianchi talked about “winning the war.”

“You can win the battle, but lose the war.

“We won two huge battles in a grand manner,” the State’s Attorney said.

“But I wasn’t sure we would regain the confidence of the community and the voters.

“You are the ones who made sure the community would Stand by Lou.

He characterized the lack of a Republican Primary Election opponent and a November Election opponent as “confirmation” that the bond of trust with the community had been reaffirmed.

Bianchi argued that trust was “proof that putting good people who have good intentions on the ballot and into office” was the way to good government in McHenry County.

As previously, Bianchi outlined his accomplishments.

He summarized the keeping of his 2008 campaign goals in that year’s slogan:

Promises kept. Justice for all.

He pointed out that

  • the State’s Attorney’s Office had gone from the five trials a year during his predecessor’s years to “fifty per year”
  • $500,000 a year is being saved by having in-house attorneys do work that outside attorneys used to perform
  • he had helped establish the
      - Mental Health Court
      - Drug Court
      - First Offender Program
  • $272,000 had been recovered from people who wrote bad checks (one woman who benefited from the program wanted me to take her picture with Bianchi)
  • a program he helped start has resulted in the collection of $494,000 in fines that otherwise wouldhave gone unpaid
  • his office was enforcing new statutes to take gangs off the street

McHenry County Deputy Sheriff Zane Seipler, who challenged the man who fired him, Sheriff Keith Nygren, and future Coroner Dr. Anne Majewski chat at State’s Attorney Lou Bianchi’s 2012 fund raiser.

Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran

Politicians aplenty were in attendance.

The man mile award went to Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran.

He wasn’t the only one from out of the county, but he was the only elected official I noticed.

McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren was missing.

So was Undersheriff Andy Zinke, a declared candidate for Sheriff in the 2014 Republican Primary Election whom Nygren has endorsed to replace him.

Announced candidate Jim Harrison did attend.

Announced Sheriff’s candidate Jim Harrison and his wife Carolyn were greeting people at Lou Bianchi’s fund raiser.

So did 2008 candidates for Sheriff Zane Seilper, whom Nygren beat and Democrat Mike Mahon.

2010 Democratic Party Sheriff’s candidate Mike Mahon chatted with Des Plaines Police Commander Bill Prim.

I spied Judges Bill Caldwell and Michael W. Feetterer.

Anne Majewski, the uncontested GOP candidate for Coroner, was the only countywide candidate I spotted.

County Board members and candidates (asterisks next to their names) included

  • Bob Bless
  • Tina Hill
  • John Jung
  • Ken Koehler
  • Donna Kurtz
  • Nick Provenzano
  • Michael Rein*
  • Sandy Salgado
  • Mike Walkup*

State Senate candidate Karen McConnaughay and State Rep. candidate David McSweeney were at the event.

There were some municipal officials, including Woodstock Mayor Brian Sager, McHenry Alderman Andy Glab and Hebron Trustee Mark Shepherd.   Probably others whom I did not recognize.

I noticed Grafton Township Trustees Rob LaPorta and Betty Zirk, Clerk Harriet Ford, plus newly-announce candidate for Grafton Township Supervisor Marty Waitzman.

There were lots of Republican Precinct Committee. They got the deal of the night. $25 for two. And that included beer and wine.

Missing was McHenry County Republican County Chairman and State Rep. Mike Tryon and State Senator Pam Althoff.

Thursday night, McHenry County State’s Attorney Lou Bianchi announced his candidacy for a third four-year term.

Distributed was “A Special Thanks to all of our Sponsors” leaflet.  It contained a list of contributors of $250 or more.

Two people gave $2,000, although one is listed as “Anonymous.”  Since all contributions over $1,000 must be reported to the Illinois State Board of Elections, I pulled up Bianchi’s information and discovered the following:

“Anonymous” was Thomas Lee Cooper from Wonder Lake.

The other $2,000 contribution was from Stanley and Tanza Kubacki from McHenry.

Nygren Winning Big

November 02, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Gus Philpott, Keith Nygren, McHenry County Sheriff, Mike Mahon

With only five precincts missing, incumbent Keith Nygren is leading by 16,126 votes.

Having Green Party candidate Gus Philpott in the race apparently made no difference is determining who won the race for McHenry County Sheriff.

Incumbent Republican Keith Nygren is getting over one and a half votes for every vote Democrat Mike Mahon is receiving

Two-Page Ad Against Nygren Runs in Northwest Herald

November 01, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Ad, Boss Hog, Gus Philpott, Keith Nygren, McHenry County Sheriff's Department, Mike Mahon, Northwest Herald

Saturday night McHenry County Blog gave reads an advance look at the $5,000 “Boss Hog” ad to be run in Monday’s Northwest Herald.

This version is easier to read, but below you see what I saw when I put it on the floor and took a picture of it:

Two pages of hits on McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren ran in the Northwest Herald today.

Will the beneficiary be Democrat Mike Mahon or the Green Party’s Gus Philpott…or both?

Cal Skinner in Two Places at One Time

November 01, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Gus Philpott, Keith Nygren, McHenry County Sheriff, Mike Mahon, Woodsock Advocate

You have to read this story by Gus Philpott on his Woodstock Advocate to believe it.

I did see someone who looked like what I think I look at the Johnsburg parade during the 1970′s when I represented all of McHenry County in the Illinois General Assembly.

McHenry County Tea Party Endorses Mike Mahon

November 01, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Endorsement, Gus Philpott, Keith Nygren, McHenry County Sheriff, McHenry County Tea Party, Mike Mahon, TEA Party

Below is the press release received today from the Mike Mahon for Sheriff campaign:

McHENRY COUNTY TEA PARTY ENDORSES MIKE MAHON FOR SHERIFF

Seen left to right, Gus Philpott, Mike Mahon and Keith Nygren debated for McHenry County Tea Party members and others at McHenry County College.

Mike Mahon has been endorsed by the McHenry County Tea Party for Sheriff of McHenry County in the general election Tuesday.

In a message to its members issued Sunday, the McHenry County Tea Party released a statement saying they believe Mahon and the other endorsed candidates “will fulfill our mission, to promote and defend the Constitution, our freedom and liberty, limited government, sound money, and free markets.”

Mike Mahon responded: “I thank the Tea Party steering committee for their endorsement and assure them that I respect their public spirit and willingness to get involved. I look forward to working with them and with all citizens.”

Mahon is running against incumbent Sheriff Keith Nygran and Green Party candidate Gus Philpott.

Nygren Goes on Name ID

October 31, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Gus Philpott, Keith Nygren, McHenry County Sheriff, Mike Mahon

I wasn't aware the Sheriff needed more name identification, but that's how he spent his campaign money here.

On the front page of the Sunday Northwest Herald, McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren has paid for the placement of a sticker right below the masthead.

How do I know?

I picked up a free copy at Colonial Cafe.

A stack of free Northwest Heralds at Colonial Cafe.

Some time last week, I noticed that the NWH was leaving about twenty copies at the restaurant.

But, back to the Nygren story.

The Sheriff did the same thing the snowy Sunday before the February 2nd Republican primary election, as you can see here.

Well, it worked for him then.

But GOP opponent Zane Seipler wasn’t planning to run a two-page ad in the NWH the next day, the way an opponent of Nygren is tomorrow.

Boss Hog Ad Coming in Northwest Herald

October 30, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Ad, Boss Hog, Gus Philpott, Keith Nygren, McHenry County Sheriff, Mike Mahon, Northwest Herald

The following two-page is scheduled to appear in the Northwest Herald Monday. If the image on your screen is not large enough, click on it and it will get bigger.

The ad is obviously intended to assist someone other than incumbent Sheriff Keith Nygren to win the election, but there is no indication of whether Mike Mahon or Gus Philpott is favored by the ad placer.

I have divided the text under the headings into two images for each page.  Click to enlarge.

Mahon Decries “Grudge Match” Against Employees like Zane Seipler

October 29, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Bob Schlenkert, Keith Nygren, McHenry County Sheriff, McHenry County Sheriff's Department, Mike Mahon, Zane Seipler

Mike Mahon, who is facing off against McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren has issued the following press release:

NYGREN’S LEGAL GRUDGE MATCHES AGAINST EMPLOYEES COSTING TAXPAYERS HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS

Zane Seipler

Mike Mahon

News that McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren will appeal a court ruling reinstating Deputy Sheriff Zane Seipler means that County taxpayers will be on the hook for additional tens of thousands of dollars in attorneys’ fees, Candidate for Sheriff Mike Mahon said Friday.

The Sheriff has already blown hundreds of thousands in fruitless legal forays against Seipler and another Deputy Sheriff, Robert Schlenkert, who has since returned to work.

The protracted legal battles arose when Nygren disputed various rulings, only to see the original decisions upheld by courts at various levels.

Schlenkert is awaiting his back pay award of more than $200,000 and Seipler’s back pay will be well over $100,000 when he likewise collects it.

When the final bill for back pay hits the taxpayers, it will be more than $400,000, and that is before legal fees, which will also likely total more than $100,000.

“The County, and by extension taxpayers, are not only out the legal fees in these two cases, but there have or will be substantial awards for back pay, which means taxpayers are left holding the bag for hours that were never worked,” Mahon said. “And now Sheriff Nygren expects taxpayers to ante up for another hopeless paper chase.”

Whatever the merits of either case, it is clear that Nygren is tilting at legal windmills on the taxpayer’s dime, Mahon said.

“It’s not as if these cases were marginal and could have gone either way,” Mahon said. “One involved a recommended three-day suspension and the other a dispute about testing procedures for reinstatement to duty. In both cases, Nygren’s hard line did nothing but run up the bill for taxpayers, who shouldn’t have to reach for their wallets every time the Sheriff has a snit.”

Also relevant to the Sheriff’s race are Zane Seipler’s latest postings on his blog.

One article says, in part,

I promise the taxpayer this, after I win (and I will win) I will pay off my debts and then I will use some of the money I receive to make McHenry County a better place.

First order of business will be to run Keith Nygren and his boys out of town.

Then we have to rebuild the Republican party with quality candidates who believe in the rule of law and don’t campaign on lies and intimidation.

I’ll have money ready to donate to those candidates when the time comes.

Heck, it will be your money anyway.

Nygren and Mahon Mail Voters
