Democratic Party Chairman Mike Bissett Comments on the Election

November 13, 2012 By: Cal Skinner Category: Democratic Party, Kathy Bergan Schmidt, McHenry County, McHenry County Board., Mike Bissett, Monopoly, Nick Chirikos, Paula Yensen

Mike Bissett

I asked McHenry County Democratic Party Chairman Mike Bissett for his take on the election.  His reply is below:

“I’m sure it’s no coincidence that the Democratic candidates who worked the hardest won.

Paula Yensen

“I’m proud of Nick Chirikos and Paula Yensen for putting in the long hours required to ensure their election.

“Paula has been an incredibly hard-working and conscientious board member for District 5 over the past four years.
“She has earned the respect of her peers and the public, regardless of party affiliation.
“She deserved re-election, and we need more people on the board like her.

Nick Chirikos

“I am also pleased that the voters in District 1 chose to elect Nick as their representative.

“Nick is an earnest and thoughtful man who will be a very strong and vocal contributor with an independent point of view.

Cathy Bergan Schmidt

“I was disappointed that Kathy Bergan Schmidt was not able to retain her seat.

“Whether you agreed with her or not, she took her responsibilities as a county board member very seriously.
“Her dedication to environmental protection and honesty in government will be missed.
“While McHenry County still leans Republican, Paula and Nick both proved that quality Democratic candidates who are willing to work hard will win.
“Voters in McHenry County are becoming more receptive to our local Party’s message of
  • fiscal responsibility
  • accountability and
  • transparency in government
“We don’t expect to change the county overnight, or even in a few years.

“The Republican oligarchy still has to run its course, but the open-minded voters of McHenry County who care about good government are with us, not them.”

Bissett and Yensen are married.
Frankly I missed the McHenry County Monopoly piece that was mailed out four years ago.

Dietitians Seek Monopoly to Give Health Food Advice in Illinois Senate Bill 2936

February 20, 2012 By: Cal Skinner Category: Dietitician, License, Monopoly, Pam Althoff

In the 69-page Senate Bill 2936 introduced by Chicago Democratic Party State Senator Iris Y. Martinez, dietitians are seeking to exclude everyone but their licensed selves from giving advice about health food.

Before I go into the details, let me speak from 16 years in the Illinois House and 8 more closely observing the process.

Licensing is never, never about anything but conveying special privilege upon some class of people. That was made most obvious by legislation requiring nail technicians and tree trimmers to be licensed. These are businesses that someone with nothing can start.

Now the privilege may be just upon those who provide the training, but, in all licensing bills, following the money is where to start.

Below is what legislators will read in their Digest listing of Senate Bill 2936. Boy is it long. Eyes glaze over time.

It's pretty obvious who is behind the curtain of Senate Bill 2936.

Remember the Wizard of Oz’ saying, “Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain?”

Remember what Dorothy says?

“You’re a very bad man.”

Here’s the synopsis:

Amends the Dietetic and Nutrition Services Practice Act. Changes the short title to the Dietitian Nutritionist Practice Act.

Provides that any person who practices, offers to practice, attempts to practice, or holds oneself out as being able to provide dietetics and nutrition services without being licensed under the Act shall, in addition to any other penalty provided by law, pay a civil penalty to the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation in an amount not to exceed $10,000 (instead of $5,000) for each offense as determined by the Department. [Emphasis added.]

Reduces the number of members on the Dietitian Nutritionist Practice Board to 5 (instead of 7). [Concentrates power in the hands of dietitians.]

Provides that to qualify for licensure as a dietitian nutritionist, the number of hours completed in a dietetic internship or documented, supervised practice experience in dietetics and nutrition services is a minimum of 1,200 hours (instead of 900 hours). [Increases money going to those who educate dietitians.]

Provides that the Department may, with regard to any license, refuse to issue or renew or may revoke, suspend, place on probation, reprimand or take other disciplinary or non-disciplinary action as the Department may deem proper, including imposing fines not to exceed $10,000 (instead of $1,000) per violation, for any one or any combination of specified offenses.

Creates a provision concerning the confidentiality of all information collected by the Department in the course of an examination or investigation of a licensee or applicant. Repeals provisions concerning transition and deposit of fees and fines. [No Freedom of Information access here.]

Makes other changes. Amends the Regulatory Sunset Act to extend the Dietitian Nutritionist Practice Act from January 1, 2013 to January 1, 2023. Effective immediately.

There are no paragraph breaks in the summary as legislators will see it on their computer screens.

So, what’s going on?

What to guess where most health food advice comes from now?

My guess would be health food stores or on-line or telephone sources.

Dr. Joe Mercola, are you listening?

Being a tenacious Osteopathic Physician researcher may not be good enough. Maybe your order takers will have to be able to do more than read your hard-found advice. Maybe they will have to be dietitians, if this bill passes.

Have you emailed your Illinois list a message asking them to contact the Senate Committee on Licensed Activities, which–how coincidental!–is chaired by the sponsor of this bill to restrict health food advice-giving?

  • Chairperson Iris Y. Martinez (D)
  • V.C. Emil Jones, III (D)
  • Annazette R. Collins (D)
  • Gary Forby (D)
  • Michael W. Frerichs (D)
  • William R. Haine (D)
  • Martin A. Sandoval (D)
  • Minority Spokesperson Ron Sandack (R)
  • Pamela J. Althoff (R)
  • Kirk W. Dillard (R)
  • Christine J. Johnson (R)
  • Kyle McCarter (R)

The bill would require these categories of advice givers to be a “Dietitian Nutritionist.”

What kind of advice?

“Dietetics and nutrition services” means the integration and application of principles derived from the sciences of food and nutrition to provide for all aspects of nutrition care for individuals and groups, including, but not limited to

  • nutrition counseling
  • nutrition assessment
  • medically prescribed diet
  • medical nutrition therapy
  • restorative

You have to read the all-inclusive definitions of these headings to comprehend the extent of the all-encompassing scope of the power grab by the dietitians. [Start on page 12.]

And, what organization is going to certify that one is capable of providing the nutritional advice?

Why the “accrediting body of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, formerly known as for the American Dietetic Association.”

What a surprise.

And, just in case you have figured out the monopoly purpose of this legislation, read this on page 17:

“No person may engage for remuneration in the practice of dietetics and nutrition services nutrition services practice or hold himself or herself out as a licensed dietitian nutritionist unless the person is licensed in accordance with this Act.”

Pam Althoff

The licensing board will no longer have a doctor or a nurse on its board, if this bill passes.

Don’t want anyone with different and broader medical education taking part in the licensing decisions, do we?

Four dietitians and a lay person. That’s good enough.

Lots of pages about penalties. One about making disciplinary information top secret, hush, hush. Wouldn’t want pesky reporters to find out how such hearings go down.

The power to issue subpoenas goes from “shall” to “may.”

All in all a bill in search of a problem that does not exist.

Let the free market work, dietitians.

That’s my advice.

When asked about the bill, State Senator Pam Althoff characterized it as “ridiculous.”

She said her Senate staff had heard from no opponents. She though chiropractors, naprapaths, health food stores and others in the business would have made contact by now.

Message of the Day – Broke

January 15, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: Income Tax, Income Tax Hike, Message of the Day, Monopoly

This is the tee shirt that Illinois Democrats tried to wear when they voted to hike income taxes 67%.

This tee shirt was found in Disney World, an appropriate place.

In the future, it may be worn by their constituents.

Another Monopoly Board Game

August 14, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Barack Obama, Grafton Township, McHenry County, McHenry County Democrats, McHenry County Republicans, Monopoly

I was extremely impressed with the McHenry County Monopoly game board created by McHenry County Democrats two years ago.

Now comes a similar take-off on the Democrats.

While the provenance of the local version is clear, I don’t know who created the satire on Obama.  You can click on images to enlarge them.

Will there be a 2012 version of McHenry County Monopoly?

“The Game of One-Party Rule.”

More about “Real Change.  No Games.”

With Sarah Palin having made the “hopey, changey” remark.

If there is a reincaration of McHenry County Monopoly this year, the Democrats won't be able to use the first issue you see on the right above. The McHenry County Board did not increase salaries of county officials this year.

Or one for the Grafton Township elections in 2013?

Here are the stories I wrote about the 2010 version:

How Is Your Town Ranked by Local Democrats?

How Is Your Town Ranked by Local Democrats?

October 31, 2008 By: Cal Skinner Category: Fox River Grove, Marengo, McHenry County, McHenry County Democrats, McHenry County Monoploy, Monopoly, Ringwood, Wonder Lake

McHenry County Democrats have sent out an imaginative post card based on the game of Monopoly.

They obviously want people to think that McHenry County Republicans have a monopoly on local office.

While that is not true—think of the Democrats on school boards—the partisan offices at the county level are dominated by Republicans, even though at least one used to be a Democrat.

All of the countywide officials are Republicans and only one of twenty-four county board members is a Democrat (Jim Kennedy of Lake in the Hills in District 5).

This article will address where your town has been placed on the McHenry County Monopoly board.

What town is where Boardwalk is? Who’s Park Place?

I would have thought Boardwalk would have been Bull Valley or Barrington Hills and Park Place one of those two as well.

But, that’s not the case.

So, this isn’t exactly a reality game.

Marengo is where Boardwalk usually appears and Ringwood is identified as McHenry County’s Park Place.

Crystal Lake, Huntley and Lakewood are the placed where the next most valuable lots are on the real Monopoly board.

The yellow lots just before where the “Go To Jail” sign on regular Monopoly appears are Algonquin, Hebron and Lake in the Hills.

McHenry, Trout Valley and Prairie Grove are the red lots next to where free parking.

Do you notice a lack of uniformity in what appears to be almost a random placement of village and city names?

The orange ones are labeled McCullom Lake, Cary and Woodstock.

Oakwood Hills, Richmond and Harvard are on the same side next to the jail.

Spring Grove, Union and Johnsburg are right before the jail, but they aren’t the color I remember on the original board (but I’m color blind to some extent, maybe I’m wrong).

The two cheapest properties on the regular Monopoly board were named Wonder Lake and Fox River Grove. I wonder if residents there will take offense.

Democrats Go for Republican Vulnerabilities – 4

I’m not sure what the last COMMUNITY CHEST substitution has to do with McHenry County Republicans.

But, what the heck.

This is a political piece and most won’t look at it as closely as I am.

Let’s cut them some slack even though it was the Clinton Administration that pushed for loosening mortgage qualifications.

It has the guy pulling his empty pants’ pockets out again with the message

MORTGAGE
DEFAULT

COLLECT $3000

Where Luxury Tax usually appears are another three monkeys.

This time it says,

CANCER
COVERUP

MCCULLOM
LAKE SCANDAL

Water and air pollution are under the jurisdiction of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and the Illinois Pollution Control Board, but the McHenry County Health Department did prepare a report that was far less than complete.

Before returning to the “STOP” game starting place, the Democrats have replaced the last CHANCE SPOT with something a bit different

A CHANCE SPOT near Boardwalk and Park Place still has a question mark, but above it is the word

CHANGE

That’s what the advertising piece is designed to push people toward, isn’t it?

Voting Democrat, rather than Republican.

Change.

And between Boardwalk and Park Place is another card with a bag of money.

$5,000 this time.

What’s that?

Democrats Go for Republican Vulnerabilities – 3

October 28, 2008 By: Cal Skinner Category: Dan Regna, Dave Bachmann, Lisa Madigan, Lou Bianchi, McHenry County Democats, McHenry County Monoploy, McHenry County Republicans, Monopoly

Today we look at the third side of the McHenry County Monopoly board.

Where the second CHANCE space usually appears after FREE PARING. the same man with his hands pulling out his pockets.

SALES
TAX

$5000

The Dems could have done something with Crystal Lake Mayor Aaron Shepley’s 75% city sales tax hike that took effect on July 1st.

No ballot box vote was required because Crystal Lake is a “Home Rule” unit and its ordinances generally are as important as state law because of that special status that can only be challenged by passing a petition seeking a vote on whether to repeal Home Rule status.

Shepley is an appointed Vice Chairman of the county GOP–for “Community Outreach,” of all things!

That huge sale tax hike went into effect on July 1st.

And, after all, all of the city council members are Republicans.

But they are elected on a non-partisan basis. Maybe that is why the Democrats gave them a pass.

Where the third railroad would be is a third bag of money.

GOOD OL’
BOYS CLUB

$2500

is written above and below it.

Oh, I get it.

Each board side’s money bag is $500 more than the one before.

The utility just before the regular “GO TO JAIL” has three more monkeys,

HUGE
SALARIES

EVERYONE GETS
A RAISE!

One candidate for office, the Democrat’s man for County Coroner, Dave Bachmann, has said he won’t take the authorized raise during the first year, should he win election.

The “Go to Jail” space at the next corner has been replaced with

GO
TO LUNCH

AT TAXPAYER’S
EXPENSE

I would have put the apostrophe after the “S,” but that’s a small quibble.
