Obama Delegates in McHenry County Congressional Districts, One from Huntley

January 06, 2012 By: Cal Skinner Category: Barack Obama, Dasthuri Henry, Nancy Shepherdson

Nancy Shepherdson

It’s the last day of filing.

President Barack Obama’s campaign waited to file its petitions for the statewide vote and for delegates in Illinois’ congressional districts until Friday morning.

Looking at the 6th Congressional District, which has the Algonquin Township part of McHenry County, there are no candidates.

Those filing in support of Barack Obama in the 6th District follow:

  • Nancy Shepherdson – Deer Park
  • Zachary Carroll – Burr Ridge
  • Moises Garcia – West Chicago
  • Navreet Kaur Heneghan – Lombard
  • Marcuse Pitchford – Lombard
  • Sue Walton – Rolling Meadows
  • Sodiqa Williams – Wheaton

I see no Alternate Delegates listed on the State Board of Elections web site.

In the 14th District (all but Algonquin Township in McHenry County) the following are listed as delegates:

  • Mark Guethle – North Aurora
  • Dasthuri Henry – Huntley (the McHenry County part)
  • Michael O’Connell – Yorkville
  • Mark Pietrowski – Cortland
  • Mary Plata – Yorkville

The Grayslake School Board Incumbents’ Campaign (Email) Trail – Part 2

May 04, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: Alex Finke, Election, Ellen Correll, email, Grayslake Unit School District 46, IEA, Illinois Education Association, Kip Evans, Marchell Norris, Mary Garcia, Nancy Shepherdson, Postcard, Ray Millington, Rochelle Gordon, Ronald Jarvis, Shannon Smigielski, Sue Facklam, Suzi Schmidt, Yard Sign

I became interested in a series of emails from and to incumbent candidates running for re-election on the Grayslake Unit School District 46 Board.

They are of interest, first, because they were sent on two school district email accounts and, secondly, they give a pretty good indication of what happened when during a teacher union-backed election campaign.

2011 election returns for Grayslake Unit School District 46. Challengers Kip Evans and Shannon Smigielski ran second and first. Incumbent emailer Sue Facklam placed third. Her running mate Mary Garcia came in fourth.

I have noted previously that in low turnout elections, relatively small, but well-organized groups like teachers unions can have disproportionate influence on outcomes. In McHenry County, it would surprise me if any school district’s board did not have a majority whose members were not supported (officially or unofficially) by its local teachers’ union.

Yesterday, we looked at emails for the first week of March, a month before the April 5th election. (Part 3–the end of the campaign–can be found here.)

This week there was an action-packed meeting that you can read about here and here.

But let’s look at some more emails. As usual, you can enlarge any image by clicking on it.

First, let me post one from March 3rd that should have been in the first article.

Both the Illinois Federation of Teachers and the Illinois Education have a common interest in the re-election of the incumbents. Instructions are given to form a Political Action Committee "once you have raised $1,000."

Republican State Senator Suzi Schmidt shows up in this email.

As of March 7th Republican State Senator Suzi Schmidt is still in the loop.

The incumbents running for re-election sought help from Lake County Democrats. They wanted access to Votebuilder. Campaign consultant Alex Finke is identified as having worked on Democratic Party campaigns in McHenry County. An email sent to 8th Congressional District Committeewoman Nancy Shepherdson is included. 8th Congressional District Democratic Party Committeewoman writes Sue Facklam, "I fear the Tea Party in your race, as well." Of course, Tea Party activists have been blamed (credited) with Congresswoman Melissa Bean's 2010 defeat.

There is reference to a letter to Illinois Education Association (IEA) members in this email. the school district seems not have supplied an attachment.

Literature for Mary Garcia and Sue Facklam is discussed here. One signer of the piece is fellow Board member Ray Millington, who was elected President of the new board.

An exchange about yard signs and flyers from Grayslake School District employee Ellen Correll to North Chicago Unit School District Ph.D. Douglas Parks is in this email.

The teacher-supported candidates reveal why liberals only want written questions. It's so their liberal friends can screen out embarrassing questions. " I definitely want written questions," emails Sue Facklam, the incumbent who won re-election. "I do not want questions from the audience," writes losing Board member Mary Garcia.

School board member Ray Millington (now District 46 Board President) sends the opposition's post card via the Grayslake School District email server.

Sign placement was the topic of this email to Grayslake Village Trustee Ron Jarvis, who won re-election.

More tomorrow.

Democrats Urge Democrats to Attend “Accidental” Congressman Joe Walsh’s Town Hall Meetings

December 07, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: 8th Congressional District, Anne F. Gueringer Johnson, Eighth District Democrats & Independents, Gail Specht, Joe Walsh, Kathryn Hausman, Nancy Shepherdson, Wendy M. Warden

An email from 8th District Democrats:

Eighth District Democrats & Independents
Joe Walsh Town Halls, starting Sunday

(he needs to hear from US!)

Will University of Chicago Public Policy Grad School Graduate Joe Walsh have even more fun with hostile questions at his Town Hall meetings than he did at parades llike this one in Johnsburg?

Our accidental Congressman, Joe Walsh, will be holding a series of “listening tour” town halls this month. I suggest we all go and give him an earful. That is, let him know that he doesn’t just represent the Tea Party by asking him some reasonable questions he will have a hard time answering in a way that isn’t alarming to anybody other than his base. The press is very likely to be there and will be quite interested in his answers.

Some questions you might want to ask (or any burning question you have):

  1. How will you bring jobs and businesses to the Eighth District?
  2. What is your plan for getting banks to lend to small businesses in the Eighth District?
  3. What do you think your win over Melissa Bean has given you a mandate to do in Congress?
  4. What do you mean by the revolution you talked about during the campaign and how do you plan to accomplish it in Washington?
  5. How will you vote when Congress is asked to raise the debt ceiling after you take office? (If they don’t vote to do it, the government will shut down, as it did in 1994.)
  6. Will you vote to repeal Obamacare and why? (Yes, call it that to get an honest answer.)
  7. Do you think we should add $700 billion to the deficit over the next ten years just to give tax cuts to people making more than $250,000 per year? Since you are a deficit hawk, will you vote against such tax cuts even if Republican leadership asks you to vote for them?

The town halls are scheduled for:

Lake Zurich
Sunday December 12
Noon-1:30 p.m.
Lake Zurich Police Department
200 Mohawk Trail (across from Ela Library)
Lake Zurich

McHenry
Monday December 13
7-8:30 p.m.

4724 W. Crystal Lake Road
McHenry

Schaumburg
Tuesday December 14
7-8:30 p.m.

201 Schaumburg Ct.
Schaumburg

Gurnee
Tuesday December 16
7-8:30 p.m.
Gurnee Village Hall
325 N. O’Plaine Rd.

Now is not the time to be silent!

Sincerely,

Eighth District Democrats & Independents (EDDI) Executive Board

Wendy M. Warden, 1st Vice Chair
Anne F. Gueringer Johnson, 2nd Vice Chair
Gail Specht, Secretary

County Fair Politicians

August 08, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Bill Baruth, Bob Kaempfe, Brent Smith, Don Manzullo, Gordon Graham, Jack Franks, Jesse White, John O'Neill, Joni Smith, Libertarian Party, McHenry County Democratic Central Committee, McHenry County Democrats, McHenry County Fair, McHenry County Regional Superintendent of Education, McHenry County Republican Central Committee, McHenry County Republican Party, McHenry County Republicans, McHenry County Sheriff, McHenry County Sheriff's Department, Melissa Bean, Nancy Shepherdson, Sally Wiggins

The McHenry County Fair is a place that a politician can meet a lot of people. I loved working them while I was running for County Treasurer and in that office from 1966-70. Not to mention the 16 years I served as state representative in the 1970′s and 1990′s.

Yesterday afternoon, I arrived just after 5.

Before I got in the gate, I saw 8th District Congresswoman Melissa Bean greeting people outside the ticket gate.

Congresswoman Melissa Bean greeted voters and gave away candy outside the ticket booth of the McHenry County Fair late Friday afternoon.

Pretty much everyone without a pit pass for the tractor pull had walk past her and her aide. A real “pressing the flesh” event. She was giving away something with sugar in it, which, amazingly, I was able to pass up.

Joe Williams, unopposed Republican candidate for Regional Superintendent of Schools was attending with his family.

The next candidate, Joe Williams, introduced himself at the ticket booth. Having no fall opponent for the office of McHenry County Regional Superintendent of Schools, he was in family mode. Just taking in the fairgrounds’ experience.

Never can predict where one will run into a candidate. John O'Neill had just bought corn on the cob for his kids.

Republican candidate for State Representative John O’Neill, a McHenry Grade School Board member and McHenry Library Trustee, had paused to buy corn on the cob from the Knights of Columbus of Woodstock and McHenry.

The tent for Jack Franks is strategically placed at the intersection where people either head to the livestock or go south to the commercial buildings.

I passed Jack Franks’ booth, but he wasn’t there. I did get a smiley face from a young man staffing his well-placed tent, however.

Independent judicial candidate Sally Wiggins stands in front of her tent.

Sally Wiggins, the Independent candidate for judge, had a tent on the way to the main place politicians were gathered.

Sally Wiggins was not wearing high heels at the McHenry County Fair.

I discovered she was not wearing high heels, as she has been every other time I have seen her.  She was wearing boots.

Sally Wiggins was distributing 20 different stickers to people who stopped by her County Fair tent. Click to enlarge any image.

She was passing out stickers with multiple messages.  I imagine most of her campaign themes, experience and background are included.

This is the first time I have ever seen any candidate distribute more than one sticker at an event.

That’s a campaign technique I have never seen before. So, that makes two innovations (three, if you could running as an “Independent”):

  • roses at parades and
  • stickers with multiply messages

Mike Mahon wore his campaign tee shirt.

Walking past Wiggins’ booth was Democratic Party candidate for sheriff, Mike Mahon.

Nunda Township Trustee Joni Smith and her son were wearing Kieth Nygren tee shirts.

Nunda Township Trustee Joni Smith came walking down the path. She and her son were wearing Nygren tee shirts, so I got photos to balance this story.

Nunda Township Republican Party Chairman Brent Smith, an avid Keith Nygren supporter, confronts Mike Mahon, Nygren's Democratic Party challenger.

Slightly behind was husband Brent Smith. He confronted Mahon asking if he had been arrested for DUI.

“Have you read my press release?” Mahon replied.

This went on for a while until a women in the booth next door chided them for not setting a good example for the children at the fair.

In any event, I sense the subject of a forthcoming hit piece against Mahon.

Flashing lights drew people to the Sheriff's Squad Car.

I passed two vehicles from the Sheriff’s Department that were right outside the Sheriff’s Department’s official booth.

Sheriff Keith Nygren engaged kids passing his booth.

A uniformed Sheriff Keith Nygren was standing right inside the door at one of two booths (three, if you count the vehicles outside) being sponsored by the Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff Keith Nygren engages children while their parents watch the interchange.

Nygren was in campaign mode, aiming his pitches at children.

Keith Nygren bounces a ball to a little boy.

He gave some high fives to kids and bounced a ball for younger ones to catch.

Republican Party booth at the McHenry County Fair.

Right around the corner was the GOP booth.

Gordon Graham was handing out nail files and Teddy Grahams. The Teddy Grahams hit ths spot.

Gordon Graham was passing out nail files and Teddy Grahams. Showing good campaign technique was the positioning of his wife on the other side of the aisle in front of an unmanned booth. That way, if someone turned away from the Republican booth, she could approach them from the other side.

GOP State Rep. candidate John O'Neill, having finished his corn, was in campaign mode in front of the GOP booth.

Jack Frank’s opponent John O’Neill was passing out job fair brochures.

Congresswoman Melissa Bean's booth early Saturday evening.

Almost across the aisle was Melissa Bean’s booth. Like last night, it was unstaffed.

In the other building I found the Libertarian Party booth.

The Libertarian Party booth.

People were asked to put glass tokens into jars that represented their opinion of governmental expenditures.

Crystal Lake's Bill Barth was manning the Libertarian Party booth.

There were actually a couple in the jar that said government always spends money wisely. Most, however, were in the “never” or “rarely” jars.

Nancy Shepherdson and Bob Kaempfe were manning the Democratic Party booth.

The Democrats were across the aisle. That’s where I found Mike Tryon’s opponent Bob Kaempfe.

8th State Central Committeewoman Nancy Shepherson was with him.

Jesse White also had a booth.

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White still had enough money in his budget to pay for a County Fair booth, but it wasn’t manned Saturday night.

From the photo I was sent yesterday, I know Congressman Don Manzullo had a booth and was told he was there earlier, but I didn’t see the booth.

The McHenry County Fair continues through Sunday evening.

Democrats Conduct Mini-Campaign Seminar at Woodstock Farm Bureau

June 17, 2009 By: Cal Skinner Category: Havnig Fun, McHenry County Democratic Central Committee, Michael Bissett, Michale Fourcher, Nancy Shepherdson, Paula Yensen, Purely Political Consulting

It was free and worth more than the price of admission.

Attended by 35-40 McHenry County Democrats, a panel of four speakers talked of what one needed to be a successful candidate.

Michael Bisset, husband of and campaign manager for McHenry County Board member Paula Yensen in her upset campaign last fall, summed the estentials up in three words:

Time

People

Money

“Most of you will find time is your strength.

“I started working on my campaign literature a year in advance,” newly elected county board member Yensen said later.

“Our secret weapon is time and message and passion to win,” Bissett said.

Mike Fourcher gave tried and try advice about raising money.

The essential, of course, is

Ask

Locally, Fourcher worked on Patrick Ouimet’s and Bill Gentes’ Illinois state senate campaigns. He founded purely political consulting after working more recently with the Haymarket Group, among others.

8th District Committeewoman for the Illinois Democratic Central Committee Nancy Shepherdson told of running for state representative twice against Lake County’s Ed Sullivan,

“Every time I ran, he got fewer votes.”

Shepherdson urged candidates to find something to be passionate about and had some really good advice regarding attitude:

“If you’re not having fun, why do it?”

She also thinks every candidate in every incumbent should have an opponent.

Tom Cynor, who was slated to be the Democratic Party’s candidate for State’s Attorney, stressed the need for money, especially for a countywide campaign.

He pointed out that there are 200,000 voters to court.

“You’re looking at a large number of folks.

“That means, unfortunately, money.

“The business of running for countywide office is raising money.

“(If you can’t raise the money) you don’t have an honest and valid shot at winning the office.

“It’s a huge, huge undertaking.”

He recommended having a war chest of at least $100,000 to run for county office.

“(Raising the money) is a task the candidate can’t be bashful about. If you’re bashful about anything, you shouldn’t be running for countywide office.”

Mike Bissett is seen in the first table shot. Behind him is Tom Cynor and Nancy Shepherdson. Below Mike Fourcher’s slide and shadow is Nancy Shepherdson. At the bottom is Tom Cynor with Shepherdson again int he background.
