Message of the Day – Anarchy

May 22, 2012 By: Cal Skinner Category: Anarchy, Old Capitol Art Fair, Old State Capitol, Springfield

Instead of going to Chicago to view massive demonstration gathered around world politicians, our family went to Springfield, a place where state politicians had deserted while leader staffers crafted legislation to be presented on a take it or leave it basis during the next two weeks.

The draw was the Old Capitol Art Fair.

But what did I spot on sidewalks around the Old State Capitol?

Take a look.

An anarchist symbol was chalked on the sidewalk at the Old Capitol Art Fair.

Not that the economy driven by taxpayer-supported state government cared.

Message of the Day – Wind

The thrill is now gone. After the garage uner the Old State Capitol was renovated, the wind stopped blowing.

This wind is artificial, but the kids attending Springfield’s 2007 Old Capitol Art Fair didn’t seem to mind.

Sadly, after the renovation of the garage under the Old State Capitol, the wind stopped.

I can tell you the children were disappointed.

Where to Put Barack Obama’s Head on a Mountain – Part 1

July 14, 2009 By: Cal Skinner Category: Abraham Lincoln, Barack Obama, George Washington, Light Show, Mount Rushmore, Old State Capitol, Springfield, Teddy Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson

One of our family’s stops on our Western Odyssey was Mount Rushmore.

We went for the nighttime presentation.

I was expecting a light show and was disappointed.

The light show I remember as being excellent was in front of Springfield’s Old State Capitol during the 1970′s. The lights bounced around the area highlighting various parts of the Old Capitol, Lincoln’s law office and other places as the narrative indicated.

As the Mount Rushmore program proceeded, I expected spotlights to bounce from Washington to Jefferson to Lincoln to TR as the role of each was described.

The faces remained in their natural light state until almost the end of the program.

Then all the faces were uniformly lit, as you can see on top.

The narrative talked about presidents after Teddy Roosevelt, but didn’t name any of them.

I listened closely to see of the Barack Obama propagandists had edited what was said.

When I did not hear the word “hope” once, I concluded that that they had not yet done so.

One of the questions that one of us came up with was

Where will we put Obama’s face?

Tomorrow I’ll reveal the perfect spot that we found late on our vacation.

Message of the Day – Askew

May 16, 2009 By: Cal Skinner Category: Old Capitol Art Fair, Old State Capitol, Pink Ribbon

This is the weekend for the Old State Capitol Art Fair in Springfield, Illinois.

Attending has been a family tradition for 18 years, this makes 19.

Last year I saw a pink ribbon on the wrought iron fence around the Old State Capitol and wanted to take a photo.

I must have been rushing to catch my family and friends because the picture turned out askew.

It somehow pleases me, however, so I’m sharing it with you.

JimRod, the Two-Headed Chicken Comes Home to Roost – Part 2

December 13, 2008 By: Cal Skinner Category: Cal Skinner, Jeff Trigg, Jim Ryan, Old State Capitol, Rockford Register-Star, Rod Blagojevich, Springfield, Waldo

Yesterday, McHenry County Blog featured the origination of JimRod, the two-headed chicken.

We looked at the first 2002 gubernatorial debate. It’s usually sponsored by the Illinois League of Women Voters, but, when I received 5% in the Daily Southtown 1,000-person poll, Jim Ryan and Rod Blagojevich, the two power party candidates, decided to skip it.

The Rockford Register-Star agreed to exclude yours truly, so the first debate was in Rockford.

JimRod was unleashed on the public that day, first in Chicago and, then, in Rockford.

JimRod’s next debate appearance was in Springfield at the Old State Capitol for the radio debate.

JimRod, was being worn proudly this time by Peoria’s Jeff Trigg (who was invaluable in the campaign). I and others stood on the north side of the Capitol. We picked it because most of the TV trucks were parked there.

It just so happened that Rod Blogojevich’s supporters were on that side. Jim Ryan and the Republicans were at the front of the building on the south side.

Rod’s car pulled up, but Rod didn’t enter the Old State Capitol above ground.

He snuck down the sidewalk stairs to the parking garage.

The reason, of course, is that no politician knows how to deal with ridicule.

He didn’t want anyone to take his picture with the guy in the two-headed chicken costume.

Want to get under the thick skin that most politicians have?

Ridicule him or her.

That’s what would have resulted had Blagojevich and JimRod appeared in a newspaper photograph.

Part 3 tomorrow.

JimRod, the Two-Headed Chicken, cartoon was used in my 2002 Libertarian Party campaign for Illinois governor against Jim Ryan and Rod Blagojevich. Back then both candidates were chickens because they would not debate me and because they would not even walk past me on the way to their power party debates. They went in back or side doors of the debate sites.

Now temporary Governor Rod Blagojevich ducks into cars like the one on the front page of Wednesday’s Chicago Sun-Times. The photograph is a variation of “Where’s Waldo?”
