Twin Lake Freedom Rally Picnic Saturday

June 13, 2012 By: Cal Skinner Category: Bassett Park, Rally, Twin Lakes, Westosha Patriots

Just above the McHenry County line in Wisconsin is Twin Lakes.

A rally is scheduled which I thought might be of interest to some south of the border.  The flyer follows:

Sponsored by Westosha Patriots, the rally will be held at Bassett Park in Twin Lakes, Wisconsin. Click to enlarge.

The rally will be held from 11-4 on Saturday, June 16th, at Bassett Park, 35604 89th St., Twin Lakes, WI 53181

Spring Grove Tea Party Members Rally for Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker

January 22, 2012 By: Cal Skinner Category: Lori Lee White, Rally, Recall, Scott Walker, Spring Grove, TEA Party, Wawautosa, Wisconsin

Earlier this weekend, I ran an article about how McHenry County Democrats had been encouraged to go to Wisconsin to work on the Recall Scott Walker effort.

Looking at the crowd in Wauwatosa Saturday. The sign you attempts to frame the recall campaign. It crosses out "Union Privileges" and touts"Taxpayer Rights."

Saturday Lori Lee White and her husband went to a Wisconsin rally for the retention of Governor Scott Walker in office. They live in the border town of Spring Grove in the most northeastern township in McHenry County and have a business in Wisconsin.

A man wearing the cheese head hat that a Wisconsin company produced in reaction to Illinos residents' mocking reference to our neighbors to the north has a bumper sticker that says, "Stand with Walker."

When I learned where they had gone form a Friend of McHenry County Blog, I asked if she would convey some a message that I would appreciate some photos of the event.

A view of the crowd in Wawautosa.

White, who is running for Republican Precinct Committeeman in Burton Township’s 3rd precinct (the only one running in any of the three precincts), did better than send photos. She wrote why they traveled above the state line to support Governor Walker in Wauwatosa.

Another view of the crowd supporting Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker.

An Associated Press said “hundreds rally.” Fox News in Green Bay, also citing the AP, reported “over thousand.”

Take a look at the photo in the Milwaukee Journal (whose cut line says “a couple thousand”) or the ones White took and judge for yourself.

Below is what White wrote:

Lori Lee White

The reason my husband and I attended the rally for Governor Walker, is that we are business owners in Wisconsin.

We see the positive changes Governor Walker has made in only one year of being Governor. In just one election, Wisconsin turned over a majority of elected seats to Republicans.

I am intrigued as to how a state can turn over and win majority, a majority the state hasn’t held in 50 years.

The positive changes Governor Walker has done in one year,

  • balanced their state budget,
  • Wisconsin property owners have a permanent property tax freeze,
  • they have voter ID law,
  • conceal carry (2nd amendment), and
  • Governor Walker just passed the “Castle Doctrine”.

Not only did Wisconsin balance their budget, they turned a deficit into a surplus.

In just one year.

What is not to celebrate if you are from Wisconsin?

The unions and the Democrats are not happy that the balanced budget gave the union employees choices.

Freedoms as to whether or not they want to even be part of a union.

Freedoms and choices in their healthcare providers.

The sign you can read relates to teacher health insurance premiums and pension payments. "We don't think having to pay for 12% of your own health care and 5% of your own pension is too much to ask." On the left hand side, it says, "Scott Walker, The Taxpayers HERO! We pay for our own health care. Why should we have to pay for 100% of yours?"

The unions are fighting to keep their money flow from the taxpayers.

That is why they are recalling Governor Walker.

Governor Walker is standing up for the taxpayers and our grandchildren’s generation.

The canine did not boast a "Dogs for Walker" sign. This was about when the crowd peaked.

The rally was a thank you to Governor Walker for doing what is right and protecting the taxpayers.

That was the theme of the speeches that we heard, from

  • Rebecca Kleefisch-(Lt.Governor),
  • Tommy Thompson-(WI Senate Candidate & previous Gov.),
  • Tonette Walker (Governor Walker’s wife),
  • Jeff Fitzgerald(Wi Assembly Speaker),
  • several young Republicans,
  • a 16 yr old varsity football player, and
  • a Marquette University young Repbublican leader.

So, many more were lined up to speak. To thank Governor Walker!!!!

Many of the speeches compared the unions and the Democrats to Illinois.

They compare themselves to what Illinois is like.

Wisconsin just got a credit upgrade, Illinois is downgraded. I

Illinois raised their taxes and still can’t balance a budget, Wisconsin balances their budget and turns a deficit into a surplus.

We, Illinois residents, are a laughing stock to Wisconsinites.

They are doing the right thing, they are supporting their Governor who works for them, gives the Wisconsin residents a voice.

We in Illinois do not have a voice.

Our representatives don’t work for us, they don’t listen to us.

They should have been at the rally to see how to get their job done.

It was an awesome, AWESOME, inspiring day!!!!!

Those who wish to assist Governor Walker could do so now, by volunteering for the recall signature verification project.

Another Friend of McHenry County Blog took photos at last February’s rally and counter rally around the Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison.  That was the time period when the Wisconsin Demcoratic Party Senators were hiding in Harvard and Woodstock.

The Saturday Demonstration in Madison

February 20, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: Demonstration, Domestic Assault, GEF1 Stewards Council, Legal Observer, Madison, Rally, Scott Walker, Security, TEA Party, Wisconsin

One of McHenry County’s representatives to the Madison demonstration Saturday was kind enough to send me all sorts of photos so you can get a sense off what went on.

First, let’s look at instructions handed out by the union organizers:

"They didn't do too well on their own second point," the person who found this instruction sheet noted.

There were “observers.”

This "Legal Observer" apparently didn't appreciate having her photo taken.

The one above wasn’t wearing yellow, but others were.

One might assume that those on Governor Scott Walker's side didn't know the yellow-shirted folks were on the public employee union's side.

There was official security, however.

Sheriff's deputies were on duty.

Observers were on top of buildings.

Those allied with the TEA (Taxed Enough Already) Party side of the issue were on one side of the State Capitol.

My guess is this was where Tea Party supporters gathered to listen to speeches.

The friend of McHenry County Blog jotted down some notes for me.

Here's what one of the signs supporting Gov. Scott Walker said, "Gov. Walker, he's our man. If he can't do it, nobody can. the 'State," not the 'Unions," decides how taxpayer dollars are spent for the good of 'all' the people of Wisconsin."

“We joined with others supporting Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker in his efforts to restore some order to the State Budget by adjusting policies regarding state funding of contracts for state workers (public employees).

This demonstration was held Saturday. One supporter of the Republican position in Wisconsin pointed out that he could not demonstrate during the week because he had to go to work.

“Beautiful weather with blue skies and lots of sunshine made it a joy to be outdoors after this long, dreary winter even though it was a bit brisk.

The Tea Party attendees seem to be listening to a speech.

“The Tea Party Patriots turned out in large numbers and filled the area at the east side of the Capital Building, with overflow on the sidewalks surrounding the east side of the building.

“Several speakers addressed the crowd, with commentary about

  • the wages and benefits of publicly paid union members,
  • the necessity to curb continued over-indulgence of pay rates and perks since the taxpayers paying those bills are no longer willing to do so.

“Chants of ‘Enough is Enough’ rose from the crowd along with, ‘Pass the Bill.’

Some streets, such as this one near the Walgreens near the Capitol were filled.

“The protesting crowd marched in the streets and on the sidewalks.

Printed union signs were evident.

“Most carried professionally made signs , some carrying names of AFL-CIO, SEIU, Teamsters or Firefighters unions.

McHenry County Blog's eyes on the street wrote this in the email accompanying this handout entitled, "Domestic Assault"--"This is one of the sheets being passed out by the pro-union, pro-teacher groups. Evidently, we should all be viewing the unions as our savior." Click to enlarge this or any other image.

“Of course, the ACLU was also present.

A union supporter carried a sign containing an acronym for TEA PARTY: "Terrified Elderly Anglos Pitching Arian Race Tantrum Y'all." Perhaps you can find some dark faces in the photos I was sent, but it appears that union jobs go primary to white people in the Madison area.

I did see one black fist on a poster, however.

The closest I could come to an African-American in the photos I was sent was the clenched black fist next to a peace symbol on the placard above. I can make out the word "Solidarity." It was behind a yellow "Recall Walker" poster and next to one advocating "Worker Rights" in two languages.

“Many signs carried by protesters were aimed at demeaning Tea Party members, several actually very obscene.

"Bit Me Tea Party," reads one poster in this picture. Another says, "Care about educators like they care about your child."

“We also heard people on both sides of the issue comment on the doctors who were present to give teachers ‘doctors’ notes’ to excuse their absences from the classroom.

The sign you see says, "My teachers are awesome. They don't call in 'SICK'" Another sign reads, "Work Rights Are Civil Rights."

“We understand some local school boards will require a doctor’s note when teachers finally decide to return to their beloved classrooms.

"Don't Sell out the Children," is written on this poster board.

“Almost forgot to mention that the old ‘For the Children routine is still alive and well and being used as a ploy to get us on their side.

"Hurting Teachers Hurts Kids" represents another variation on a theme that is often used in school tax hike referendums. "Really Tommy Walker" is on another. I can make out, "Mr. Walker. You're a bad man" and "Cops for Labor" in the background.

“Several signs were incorporating the ‘For the Children’ routine in various configurations.

"Real Democracy - Letting All Have a Say in Public Servants Compensation" is the message here.

“Signs also use the rationale that the protest is an exercise in democracy and a teaching moment.

A homemade sign reads, "No child left behind requires no teacher left behind. How do we go forward? On Wisconsin!"

“We had conversations with teachers on two separate occasions during the afternoon dealing with their pensions and health care benefits.

This was a popular professionally-printed sign: "Care about teachers. They care about your child." There are two big red hearts on it.

“Both teachers told us that they are also taxpayers so don’t understand why taxpayers should object to their negotiations.

This poster talks of financial concessions made by public employee unions: "Unions made financial concessions. Walker said, 'No.' This is not about $."

“When asked who paid their pensions and health care, we were told that they do

A sign on the Tea Party side of the Capitol: "Tea Party. These colors don't run. We'll Exploit Any Child."

“Neither recognized that the taxpayers actually fund both.

A self-identified University of Wisconsin student carries a sign saying, "Future Teacher, Current UW Student, Former Union Member, I'm a triple threat." To the left is a printed sign reading. "Teabaggers are too stupid to understand that he is screwing you too."

“Also notable was the position that since teachers have degrees they are more worthy of high salaries; this point was highly promoted by

  • a woman claiming to have not one but TWO degrees (who takes taxpayer money as a school social worker) and
  • a man who claimed his wife went to school for an additional 15 years so she could be a research scientist (writing submissions for grants worth millions of dollars – another taxpayer funded enterprise).

"Get Back to Work" can be seen on one sign. I can also see a yellow sign reading "I stand with Walker."

“Both were particularly adamant that those with the degrees should be the ones earning top dollars.

"No deficit spending" and "Support Walker" signs can be seen. Click to enlarge the photo and you can see men on the top of the building with lots of windows.

“I guess the rest of us should just work to give to them and stop complaining.

"Stop the Attack on Wisconsin Families" one printed sign read. Standing next to the man holding it is a women with a placard that says, "Wisconsin Educators - A Voice for Wisconsin's Students and Public Schools."

“Overall, I’d have to say that the whole event was notable for viewing the activities of those who profess to be professionals.”

Message of the Day – Hypocrisy

February 17, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: Adolph Hitler, Bill Maher, Demonstration, Eugene Robinson, Gabrielle Giffords, Hitler, Message of the Day, Rally, Republican Party, Robert Gibbs, Scott Walker, Teachers Union, Wisconsin

The Wisconsin Republican Party has crosscut comments from prominent liberals with the words used in Madison, Wisconsin, in opposition to what Republican Governor Scott Walker is proposing to change public unions in the General Assembly.

The YouTube video starts with President Barack Obama’s press secretary decrying the comparing of political figures to Hitler.

Next comes pictures of the demonstrators.

Guess what?

Governor Scott Walker is compared to Adolph Hitler.

The main message on this sign is "Scott Walker = Adolph Hitler." Note the Nazi symbol.

A photo of Hitler at the Madison rally.

The video is about hypocrisy, of course.

It skewers comments like Eugene Robinson's: "Violent political rhetoric...comes almost exclusively from the Right."

Bill Maher gets a comeuppance.

Bill Maher attributes comments about killing opponents to the "Right-wing."

"Left-wingers don't talk that way," Bill Maher asserts.

And remember the target used on Sarah Palin’s web site for Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords?

The photo is of Wisconsin Republican Governor Scott Walker. On the top of the sign can be reat the words, "Don't Retreat."

Apparently some Wisconsin public union member didn’t get the message of civility.

"Don't Retreat, Reload," the complete message reads.

And, now below the relevance of my comment about Sarah Palin’s targeting of Democrats in the fall election.

Wisconsin residents love their guns as much as those in Alaska do. One might note that the symbol of "Repeal," a legislative word, is not crosshairs.

Notice that I have not contending that conservatives don’t use similar rhetoric.

During the 1990′s while my legislative office was on Manor Road across from the old motel that was razed to build Chuck E. Cheese and Outback Steakhouse, a sign was posted pointing out that one of the first things Hitler did was to impose guy control.

A Demcoratic Party State Senator expands my education in the video by pointing out that Hitler banned unions in 1933.

Seeing that an analogy to Hitler's abolishing unions was used in Madison by State Senator Lena Taylor on February 15th, would it be fair for those who favor allowing people to carry guns to defend themselves in Illinois to make similar speeches in Springfield on Gun Lobby Day about Illinois Democrats opposed to keeping this state as one of only two (the other being Wisconsin) where people can't do so?

If the pictures and text leave you wanting to see more, the YouTube video is below:

Message of the Day – A Tee Shirt

July 29, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: 4th of July, Crystal Lake, Demonstration, Message of the Day, Rally, Route 14, TEA Party

I Love
My Country.

It’s the Government
I’m Afraid Of.

The woman wearing this tee shirt also carried a sign. It said, "'It does not take a majority to prevail...but an irate, tireless minority keen on setting brushfires of liberty in the minds of men.' Samuel Adams"

That’s what this tee shirt from the July 4th Tea Party rally on Crystal Lake’s Route 14 said.

What to see the sign?

Here it is:

This patriot was carrying a hand-letter sign with a quote from Sam Adams.

TEA Party Supporters Planning July 4th Rally

July 02, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Crystal Lake, Demonstration, Independence Day, July 4th, Lauri Jenner, Palatine, Rally, Route 14, TEA Party

Demonstrators were enthusiastic at Crystal Lake's TEA Party demonstration on April 15, 2010.

July 4th will see another Tea Party in Crystal Lake

Crystal Lake will have another TEA Party demonstration on July 4th from 1-3.

Since Crystal Lake’s parade is Monday, July 5rh, at 1, that won’t be a conflict.

It will be held pretty much where the April 15th event was–across the street from Applebees in front of the old Baker’s Square.

Organizers have sent the following information:

Another Tea Party is brewing in Crystal Lake. One of several Chicago-area Independence Day Tea Parties will be held Sunday, July 4 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Freedom-loving citizens are invited to bring flags and homemade signs, and come network with like minded people.

A list of speakers is being assembled, and will be highlighted by “Patrick Henry Revisited.” The legendary patriot will appear in full colonial garb and deliver an update to his famous 1775 address to the Second Virginia Assembly.

The peaceful rally will be held on the south side of Route 14 in front of Crystal Court Shopping Center. It is being organized by the McHenry County Tea Party. Additional information can be found here or by calling Laurie Jenner at 847-287-1432.

Palatine TEA Party folks are planning a similar rally for July 3rd. The details follow:

A group of taxpaying citizens dissatisfied with government spending and expansion are planning a Taxed Enough Already (TEA) rally to be held in Palatine, Illinois. This peaceful rally is part of a national movement to increase public awareness of the spending of trillions of dollars which will leave our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren a devastating and ruinous debt they must re-pay.

This family-friendly rally encourages all citizens throughout the suburban area who want lower taxes and less government to participate by bringing their American flags, patriotic attire, and signs to display the spirit of the Colonial Patriots of the 1775 Boston Tea Party, which lead to American Independence July 4th, 1776.

Re-affirm your commitment to our Constitution and our freedoms by being part of this energizing event on Saturday, July 3rd, 2:00pm to 4:30pm, at Volunteer Plaza in Palatine at the intersection of N. Northwest Hwy (Route 14) and N. Hicks Road.

Saturday’s Young Republican Rally

April 07, 2009 By: Cal Skinner Category: Bryan Javor, Erica Poremba, Jim Schlader, Joni Smith, Kay Stanish, McHenry County Young Republicans, Mike Tryon, Rally, Rob Lee, Salvatore Cucinella, Woodstock VFW

A bit late to report on the YR’s VFW rally last Saturday night, but there’s no competition from the local daily papers, so here’s what I have.

First we have Young Republican President Bryan Javor talking to Crystal Lake city council candidate Kay Stanish.

Next you see two Nunda Township candidates posing some YR’s in attendance.

From left to right, they are Nunda Township Trustee candidate Joni Smith, YR Kristin Culley, RY Vice Chair Erica Poremba, YR Membership Chair
Salvatore Cucinella and Nunda Township Trustee and candidate for re-election Jim Schlader.

Finally, here is a photo of State Representative and McHenry County Republican Part Chairman Mike Tryon talking with District 300 school board candidate Rob Lee.

Over 50 attended the rally.
