McHenry County Romney Alternate Delegate on Jack Franks’ Fundraising Host Committee

September 04, 2012 By: Cal Skinner Category: Alternate Delegate, Bob Martens Sr., Brian Sager, Fund Raiser, Greenwood Township, Jack Franks, Jesse White, Jesse White Tumbler, Mayor, Mitt Romney, Randy Donley, Republican National Convention, Republican Precinct Committeeman, Woodstock

The cover of Jack Franks’ 2012 McHenry County fund raiser invitation.

A friend of McHenry County Blog has forwarded an invitation to Democrat State Rep. Jack Franks’ September 29th fundraising breakfast at Donley’s Wild West Town.

The Jesse White Tumblers will perform.

As usual Franks provides a list of those who have agreed to be on his Host Committee.

In 2010 those attending the Crystal Lake 4th of July Parade could have seen this flip.

Unlike last year, GOP Sheriff Keith Nygren is not on the list.

But Woodstock Mayor Brain Sager still is.

He’s there with Chicago Democratic Party Ward Committeeman and Alderman Ed Burke.

Last year, such sponsorship was less significant than this year.

Brian Sager

Then, Sager was only a minor cog in the McHenry County Republican Party, a Precinct Committeeman from Greenwood Township Precinct 6.

The mayoral post is non-partisan.

Sure, I’ve written that I believe he wishes to run for Franks’ seat when Franks runs for something else, but his official role is that a GOP Precinct Committeeman.

This year, Sager

  • was recruited to run as an Alternative Delegate by State Treasurer Dan Rutherford,
  • was elected and
  • is just returning from the National Republican Convention.

Looking for Republican County Board member candidates, I see far fewer than last year.

Randy Donley, who is retiring this year is listed.

There is a listing for “Bob & Judi Martens.”  I do not know if that is the District 4 candidate listed on the ballot as “Robert Martens Sr.”

Message of the Day – A Tee Shirt

August 30, 2012 By: Cal Skinner Category: Barack Obama, Clint Eastwood, Message of the Day, Republican National Convention, T-Shirt, Tee Shirt

“GONE, January 20, 2013″ with an Obama campaign logo in the “O” is what this tee shirt says.

This T-Shirt was found at the Republican gathering at d’Andrea’s in Crystal Lake.

Clint Eastwood carried on an imaginary conversation with an empty chair representing President Obama. “No, I can’t tell Mr. Romney that.” Pause.
“That’s anatomically impossible” or something pretty close brought down the house.

Folks were gathered to watch the final night of the Republican National Convention.

Newt Gingrich Delegates and Alternates in Illinois

December 25, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: Delegate, Illinois, Newt Gingrich, Republican National Convention

A press release from four days ago that I somehow missed. See below for all delegates and alternates running statewide:

Newt Gingrich signed one of his books at a Barrington Hills fund raiser in September. Photo credit Warner Todd Huston.

The Newt Gingrich campaign in Illinois is being organized statewide by a team of volunteers based in Barrington at this time.

See attached. This includes the list of delegate candidates for Newt Gingrich in Illinois by county and district.

Further information about the Newt Gingrich campaign in Illinois will be available during the first week of January when we file the ballot access petitions in Springfield for Newt with full slates of delegates in all 18 districts. Until then, all media inquiries about the national campaign or policy issues are being handled by the national spokesman and the official website, http://www.Newt.org , which has an RSS feed for official press releases.

http://www.newt.org/news/feed

This release responds to recent media enquiries about the volunteer organization in Illinois. We have been doing the preparatory work for the campaign, but have not been seeking media attention or public endorsements during that process, so some reporters jumped to the false conclusion that the campaign does not exist in Illinois. On the contrary, we have organized a network of very capable volunteers across the state with experience from many other campaigns.

Information for Newt Gingrich supporters is available through the IllinoisWithNewt page on Facebook.

http://www.facebook.com/IllinoisWithNewt

On Twitter, the campaign HQ is @Newt2012HQ and supporters often use the hashtag #WithNewt

Best regards,

Bruce Donnelly, Delegates & Petitions Coordinator, cell 847-951-2913

Change Being Considered for GOP Presidential Delegate Selection Process

August 31, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: Illinois Republican Party, National Convention, Pat Brady, Republican, Republican National Convention, Republican Party

The headline is boring, but the change being considered could take away your right to vote for the delegates of your choice for the Republican Presidential Nominating Convention.

Thanks to Illinois Review for pointing the way, and as its Editor Fran Eaton writes, “Thanks to the cooperation and sharing of Pubius Forum‘s Warner Todd Huston, Illinois Review has obtained copies of the proposal before the IL GOP State Central Committee.”

Pat Brady, the Chairman of the Illinois State Republican Central Committee, will be at the Nunda Township Republican Central Committee meeting at Prairie Isle Golf Course on Route 17 east of Route 31 in Prairie Grove at 7 tonight.  See the previous story for a map.

First a chart showing what happened in the past and what is proposed. Click to enlarge the chart or any other image.

Next for your “enjoyment” is a list of “Pros” and “Cons” provided by the State Central Committee:

For hard core folks who want to read the draft resolution, the two-pager is below:

One Life to Live – The Soap Opera Life of Steve Bullmer, New Methodist Minister in Crystal Lake

September 04, 2008 By: Cal Skinner Category: First United Methodist Church of Crystal Lake, Republican National Convention, Soap Opera, Steve Bullmer

I suggested yesterday that the Republican National Convention is reminding me of a soap opera.

Whether the GOP “show” will gain the popularity of the TV soaps is a question yet to be answered, but you will remember that my thinking about soap operas reminded me of the soap opera-themed sermons of our First United Methodist Church’s new minister Steve Bullmer.

The second week after his reassignment from the First United Methodist Church of Marengo, Bullmer’s theme was “One Life to Live.”

He talked about his twenty-something years.

First, how he decided to become a minister. When he went to college, he thought he wanted to be a lawyer and a politician. (“You can insert your favorite lawyer joke here,“ he said.)

But three weeks of political science classes cured him of that. In his words:

“At Eastern Illinois University, Wesley UMC is on the edge of the EIU campus. So one evening after dinner I walked over to the church, found the doors open (though no one seemed to be in the building), went into the sanctuary, sat down on the steps leading up to the altar, and said to no one in particular,
“‘What do I do now?’

“And a voice in my head—it was not my voice—said,

“‘Why don’t you be a minister?’

“I said,

“‘That’s the craziest idea I’ve ever heard!’

“And the voice said,

“‘Try it, you’ll like it.’

“I said,

“‘Okay, I’ll try it; but if I don’t like it I want permission to get out.’

“(I wasn’t going to lock myself into another life direction that falls apart in three weeks.) “And the voice said,

“‘Fine.’

“So I got up, walked back to my dorm and said to my roommate,

“‘Uh, I guess I’m going to be a minister.’

“And that’s how God called me into ministry.”

Still, Bullmer had self-esteem problems.

“In the summer between high school and college I met a girl who said she loved me. And it was great … for a while … but before the summer was over I knew the relationship wasn’t working, and I tried to break it off, but she begged me to stay.

“Then my emotional insecurities got the better of me. I thought to myself,

‘Yeah, this isn’t working … but what if no one else ever says, “I love you”? If I end this relationship, I will be unloved and unlovable for the rest of my life! And isn’t a bad relationship better than no relationship at all? So I’ll stick with her until someone better comes along.

‘But no one came along … which just convinced me I really was unlovable and this was my one and only shot at love. So I married her, got my bachelor’s degree, and headed off to seminary. Remember this story, because next week I’ll tell you how this really bad decision ruined my life, totally screwed up my children’s lives, and only the redeeming power of Jesus Christ could fix the mess I created.’”

“General Hospital” tomorrow.

Barrington Hills Woman 16th Congressional District Delegate Candidate for John McCain

January 24, 2008 By: Cal Skinner Category: Barrington Hills, John McCain, Nina Stephenson, Republican National Convention

Finding its way to the email inbox of McHenry County Blog is this information about Nina Stephenson, a candidate to the Republican National Convention pledged to John McCain.

It’s a letter from Barrington Hills family of Frank, Pamela and Linda Cools which asks for help in electing Stephenson.

Dear Sixteenth Congressional District Republican Leader:

We are writing to ask for your help in electing our friend Nina J. Stephenson of Barrington Hills, Illinois as a Delegate to the Republican National Nominating Convention for the 16th Congressional District of Illinois.

Nina’s name appears on the February 5, 2008 Republican Primary Election Ballot, and if elected, she will represent our voters at the National Convention to be held in Minneapolis-St. Paul from September 1st through 4th, 2008.

In the time that we have known Nina, we have found her to be a fervent supporter of many neighborhood causes in McHenry County, as well as a dynamic participant in numerous community-based groups and charitable organizations. Let us introduce you to the Nina whom we have come to wholeheartedly admire and respect.

Who is Nina?

As a lifelong Republican, Nina J. Stephenson first became active in politics as a student leader for Ronald Reagan. She has served in various positions on many campaigns in Mississippi and Texas including those of George H.W. Bush, Rep. Webb Franklin, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson and George W. Bush.

After graduating from the University of Mississippi School of Law, she practiced business litigation in Texas for ten years until her marriage to Robert M. Stephenson (litigation partner with Foley & Lardner) and her relocation to the Chicago area in 1996.
Nina is currently serving on Senator John McCain’s Illinois Finance Committee.

Since 2004, Nina has been a member of Adopt-a-Platoon which was founded by mothers of our service members and supports them and their families while they are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. So far, she and Robert have been the adoptive family for 17 soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines. In 2005, Nina received a special commendation from the Secretary of the Army for her volunteer efforts and she proudly wears a lapel pin that designates her as an honorary Army Parent.

Locally, Nina is an advocate for women and their children in abusive and transitional situations through her volunteer efforts with Friends of the Home of the Sparrow. In 2007, she served on the underwriting, auction and event committees. In 2008, she will serve as the charity’s secretary.

As a member of the sponsorship committee for the Barrington Junior Women’s Club, Nina works to support the numerous charitable causes designated each year including Meals on Wheels and WINGS (Women In Need Growing Stronger).

At St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Barrington Hills, Nina serves on the Flower Guild and co-chairs their bi-annual fundraising events.

The animal-loving Stephensons are also members of the Conservator’s Circle at Lincoln Park Zoo and share their Barrington Hills home with their bevy of poodles and a boxer puppy.

How does the delegate process work?

The process for electing delegates is a bit complicated. The names of the 24 potential delegates (along with their preference for President of the United States) will appear on the primary ballot. The top vote-getters will represent the 16th District of Illinois at the National Convention. Although the ballot allows you to vote for up to 4 delegates, you are not obligated to do so.

You may be concerned that a given delegate’s candidate preference does not coincide with your current presidential choice. Rest assured that your choice of a particular delegate on the primary ballot does not in any way affect the vote which you cast for a given presidential candidate. Also, keep in mind that the slate of Republican presidential candidates which exists on February 5th is very likely to change before the September convention based on primary/caucus results, candidate withdrawals or other circumstances.

Based on her exemplary credentials and countless accomplishments, we strongly encourage you to select Nina J. Stephenson to represent us at this important political convention. We are proud to call her our neighbor and friend and know she will do an outstanding job representing the interests of the voters of the 16th District.

Please feel free to distribute this message to other interested Republican voters in your organization. Thank you!
