Young Democrats Meeting Tonight

August 27, 2009 By: Cal Skinner Category: Bob Kaempfe, Ed Riley, Ed Rotchford, Jim Kennedy, McHenry County Young Democrats, Meredith Reid Sarkees, Mike Bisset, Paula Yensen, Robert Ludwig

The McHenry County Young Democrats are meeting at Algonquin’s Eastgate Library from 7 until 8:30 tonight.

Speaker for the evening will be Thomas Castillo, one of the many candidates for the Democratic Party nomination for Lt. Governor.

As State Rep. Lou Lang (D-Skokie) explained Wednesday night, people have seen what happened to former Lt. Governor Pat Quinn and think it might happen to them.

At the Democratic Party Central Committee meeting at the Farm Bureau building last night, Ed Rotchford announced that all are welcome to attend.

The YD’s will also be electing officers.

Another lieutenant governor candidate, Justin Oberman, will speak the the Young Democrats on September 17th.

At the Wednesday meeting you see, from left to right, you see Marti Swanson in the foreground, Ed Riley, who ran for Greenwood Township Supervisor, former District 6 McHenry County Board candidate Robert Ludwig, District 5 McHenry County Board member Paula Yensen, Ed Rotchford, Bob Kaempfe, candidate for state representative against Mike Tryon, Nunda Township Trustee candidate Meredith Reid Sarkees, District 5 McHenry County Board member Jim Kennedy and Mike Bisset.

Democrats Work Wonder Lake Highland Shores

August 18, 2008 By: Cal Skinner Category: District 6, Highland Shores, Kerry Julian, McHenry County Board., Robert Ludwig, Tom Cynor, Wonder Lake

On the west side of Wonder Lake in Greenwood Township is Highland Shores, where my in-laws live.

My mother-in-law is quite good at saving politic messages for me.

I hadn’t been up in a while, so my reporting on this hand out by McHenry County Democrats is a bit late.

It arrived on my in-laws’ door knob a couple of week ago.

It features 8 ½ by 6 inches pieces for McHenry County State’s Attorney candidate Tom Cynor and McHenry County Auditor candidate Kerry Julian, plus the same size piece from the McHenry County Democratic Central Committee. The latter has web sites for all the candidates who have them.

There is also a smaller card for McHenry County board candidate Robert Ludwig. I believe he is the one who didn’t have a sense of humor about my pointing out that the Emerald Ash Borer leaves a “D”-shaped hole in trees it is attacking.

This is the second time that Democrats have been out working in County Board District 6. In late June, they worked the Sun City portion in Huntley.

I guess they don’t believe that their county board candidates’ having gotten fewer primary election votes that the victorious Democratic Party candidates means they’re not going to win in November.

I wonder if any Republicans in District 6 are going door-to-door.

If you receive a little baggy from McHenry County Democrats, please drop me an email.

Dems Knocking on Doors in Sun City Sunday

June 29, 2008 By: Cal Skinner Category: Culver's, Huntley, McHenry County Democrats, Robert Ludwig, Sun City, Thomas Cynor

Last Saturday, it was Democrats approaching homeowners in Lake in the Hills on behalf of Paula Yensen, McHenry County Democratic Party candidate for county board in the 65th district.

Today, it is 6th district candidate Robert Ludwig.

Accompanying him with be the Democratic Party for McHenry County State’s Attorney, Tom Cynor.

They are meeting at Culver’s at 11 AM. They will knock on doors until 3, when treats at Culver’s

I wish I could be there to take a picture when they meet, but I’ll be at the First Methodist Church of Crystal Lake at our 11 o’clock service looking at some of the hundreds of pictures I and others took at Vacation Bible School this past week. They will appear on the big screens before each church service.

And, I’m sure my wife and weekend scheduler has me doing something in mid-afternoon as well.

But, maybe someone will send me a picture I can show you.

Free publicity, folks, and both candidates certainly need more name identification, if they are to have a chance of victory.

I was going to run a story entitled, “Democrats Invade McHenry County,” but it will have to wait until tomorrow. One Democratic Party invasion story a day is sufficient.

McHenry County Democrats Elect Kathy Bergan Schmidt as New Chair

March 07, 2008 By: Cal Skinner Category: Brian McTague, Carolyne Quinn, Chris Emmerich, Kathy Bergan Schmidt, Mary Margaret Maule, McHenry County Democratic Central Committee, Patrick Murfin, Robert Ludwig, Sam Melie, Tom Cynor

Since it is impossible to be two places at the same time, I rely upon the following press release to tell you what happened Wednesday night at the organization convention of the McHenry County Democratic Central Committee. The meeting was held at the Woodstock Opera House.

The photo of Kathy Bergan Schmidt, the Democrats’ new head, was also supplied by that party.

KATHLEEN BERGAN SCHMIDT HEADS NEW DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP TEAM

CRYSTAL LAKE—Cheers and applause greeted Kathleen (Kathy) Bergan Schmidt of Crystal Lake as she was unanimously elected the new Chair of the Democratic Party of McHenry County. Schmidt steps up from a term as Vice Chair to succeed Tom Cynor.

Cynor stepped down as chair citing family responsibilities. His second child, a daughter, was born on Primary night, February 5. Cynor will remain on the executive board, however, as the new Treasurer.

Sam Melei, previously the party’s General Council was elected Vice Chair and party veteran Patrick Murfin was elected secretary.

Bergan Schmidt, currently running for a seat on the County Board from District 3, credited her experience as a candidate with giving her a special insight into the needs of those who put themselves before the voters. She ran previously for Nunda Township Trustee and for the County Board in 2006.

Her service to the party has included a term as Secretary. As Vice Chair she was in charge of the Election Services Committee that recruits candidates and offers them training and technical support; was responsible for the electronic voter file system the party uses; oversaw the recruitment of election judges and poll watchers; and kept the party abreast of changes in election law.

Bergan Schmidt’s involvement in McHenry County matters began with her membership in the Planning and Development Committee of the Fox Valley Freeway Advisory Committee in the early 1990′s. She has also been active in the McHenry County IL Genealogical Society, the McHenry County Historical Society, the Wildflower Preservation and Propagation Committee, and the McHenry County Breast Cancer Task Force. She currently represents the “Historical” stakeholders on the Imagine McHenry County Board of Directors.

Citing the philosophy of the late Minnesota Senator Paul Welstone, Bergan Schmidt promised to marry the traditional “boots on the ground” organization of Precinct Representatives and volunteers going door to door with the sophisicated electronic tools that have empowered a whole new generation of political activists.

After the election of officers, the convention broke up into County Board District caucuses to elect County Board District Chairs. District Chairs work with local Precinct Representatives to build the party and provide information to the electorate. District Chairs also sit on the Party Executive Committee with the elected officers.

The new District Chairs are

  • Brian McTague in District 1,
  • Carolyne Quinn in District 2, Dan Giallombardo in District 3,
  • Mary Margaret Maule in District 4,
  • Chris Emmerich in District 5, and
  • Robert Ludwig in District 6.

Democrats Bob Ludwig and Darryl Frank Win District 6 County Board Primary

February 06, 2008 By: Cal Skinner Category: Andrew Georgi, Darryl Frank, District 6, McHenry County Board., Robert Ludwig

The McHenry County Democratic Party held a local primary election and people actually came.

Live votes (as opposed to absentee and early votes) in the precincts totaled 7,468 for the three Democratic Party candidates.

Republicans, on the other hand, cast 9,472 votes or almost 56% of those cast in the county board primary elections.

So, it could be concluded that Republican strength in this part of McHenry County is much stronger than it is countywide, where the Democrats captured 51.5% of the ballots cast for president.

Winners in the Democratic Party primary election were Bob Ludwig and Darryl Frank, in that order.

Andrew Georgi came in third, 708 live votes behind Frank.

As luck would have it, I got pictures of Bob Ludwig and Andrew Georgi at the January 16th McHenry County Democratic Central Committee meeting. Unfortunately, the third candidate, Darryl Frank, was not there. The picture is of Bob Ludwig.

Daily Herald McHenry County Board Endorsements

January 30, 2008 By: Cal Skinner Category: Andrew Georgi, Bill Yocius, Ersel Schuster, Harry Alten, Jim Schlader, Lowell Cutsworth, Marc Munaretto, Mary Donner, Nick Provenzano, Randy Donley, Robert Ludwig

The Daily Herald has issued its recommendations for county board. Those endorsed have their names in boldfaced type.

It targets the following issues:

  • Rapid growth
  • Transportation and
  • Water supply

It disqualifies two candidates, who would apparently otherwise be endorsed,

  • incumbent District 1 board member and Algonquin Township Clerk Republican Marc Munaretto, who lives in Algonquin, and
  • District 6 Seneca Township Supervisor Ersel Schuster.

That’s because the Daily Herald supposedly takes a hard line on people holding two elective offices: they’re against it. They point out that there might be a conflict of interest. But, they endorsed Munaretto previously for county board. Go figure.

I’d assume from the laudatory things said about the two that they would otherwise be endorsed.

Here’s what was said about Munaretto:

”Although his sometimes arrogant approach can alienate, incumbent Marc Munaretto’s financial savvy would net our endorsement for another term were he not to insist on holding two elected posts…”

Here’s what was written about Schuster:

”A sprawling District 6 covers most of the county’s western half, straddling Huntley’s western edge to Hebron and Harvard. Its unique needs require strong county board representatives. Of the five candidates, former county board member and current Seneca Township Supervisor Ersel Schuster stands out as someone who does her homework, knows the county’s challenges and guarantees strong advocacy for constituents. But, if elected, she would hold two elected offices and our policy, as previously outlined, is to not endorse candidates holding conflicting positions.

So, with those two disqualified, here are the endorsees:

District 1 – Republican Party

  • Former Fox River Grove Village President (and one of my 1992 GOP state rep. primary opponents) Bill Yocius is said to “clearly knows(s) the needs of the district” and
  • Algonquin Township Trustee Lowell Cutsworth is also from FRG. Cutsworth says he will resign the trustee post, if elected. He is cited for “with his understanding of the growing district’s transportation needs and the need to work with other entities to find solutions.”

So, it seems the Daily Herald likes three of the candidates. It dismisses “newcomer Bob Bless,” who had that lighted sign I saw in the fog on Christmas Day in Silver Lakes.

District 1 – Democratic Party

No primary contest for Cary’s James McTague.

District 2 – Republican Party

No primary contest and, hence, no endorsement, for

  • Incumbent Jim Heisler and
  • Newcomer Scott Breeden, who has served as Lakewood Village President and President of the Crystal Lake Park Board.

District 3 – Republican Party

  • Mary Donner and
  • Nick Provenzano, both incumbents, were endorsed.

A third candidate, “challenger Jim Schlader shows great promise and would also make a strong county board member,” the editorial says.

Strangely, no mention is made of Kurt W. Milliman.

District 3 – Democratic Primary

No endorsement because of lack of opposition: Kathleen Bergan Schmidt.

District 4 – Republican Party

No primary contest and no endorsement with these two incumbents, both from Wonder Lake, running for re-election:

  • John D. Hammerand and
  • Sue Draffkorn

District 4 – Democratic Party

Running unopposed is Jeff Thirtyacre of Spring Grove.

District 5 – Republican Party

No primary contest. Incumbents running for re-election are

  • John Jung and
  • Virginia Peschke, both from the Woodstock area.

District 5 – Democratic Party

Running unopposed is Paula Yensen, a Lake in the Hills Trustee.

District 6 – Republican Party

  • “Challenger Harry Alten would be a strong board member representing McHenry County’s still-thriving farm community” and
  • Randy Donley knows his district’s needs but has played a low-key role on this board thus far. We hope he’ll be a stronger advocate in the future.”

Also listed as candidates are John Johns of Woodstock and Roger Naylor of Marengo.

Democrats – District 6

Three are running. Endorsed are

  • Andrew Georgi and
  • Robert Ludwig,

The Daily Herald says, “…both want the board to focus more on transportation and water issues, are endorsed.”

A third Democrat, hence the need for a Democratic Party primary election, named Darryl Frank told the Daily Herald that a sickness in the family precluded participation in the interview process.

The picture on top of Bill Yocius on the left and Lowell Cutsworth on the right was taken at the Cary-Grove Country Club, where the Algonquin Township Republican Central Committee held a candidates’ night Tuesday night. You can see a photo of State Rep. and candidate for McHenry County Republican Party Chairman Mike Tryon addressing the crowd on the need for unity after the February 5th primary election.

The head shots below are of McHenry County Board members Mary Donner and Nick Provenzano.

County board member Randy Donely is seen alone because I do not have a photo of Harry Alten.

At the bottom are, from left to right, Democratic Party candidates for county board Andrew Georgi and Bob Ludwig. Their photographs were taken at the January 16th Democratic Party Central Committee meeting. Ludwig’s was taken for his sweatshirt, which will appear as a “Message of the Day” one of these days. I didn’t know he was a candidate when he allowed me to take it. The full photo will explain the slightly odd angle of his head.

The TV screen is what Republicans were seeing last night at the Cary Country Club while candidates were speaking.
