Marengo Burglers Believed Arrested

A September 9th press release from the McHenry County Sheriff’s Department:

Residential Burglary Suspects Arrested in Rock County for the Unicorporated Marengo area Burglaries

Sheriff Keith Nygren announced today the apprehension of two Rockford area men suspected in residential burglaries in the unincorporated Marengo area.

On Friday, September 2nd in the afternoon hours, the Rock County Sheriff’s Office (WI) stopped a suspicious vehicle that was occupied by James Tarrant and Nicholas Batzler.

Further investigation revealed that four residential burglaries were committed in Rock County, and the vehicle contained proceeds from the burglaries including televisions, guns and pillow cases.

Investigators from Boone, Rock, Ogle, Winnebago and McHenry County are investigating residential burglaries that may be connected to these two offenders.

Two search warrants were executed on residences and more stolen property was recovered, including proceeds from two residential burglaries in McHenry County.

Charges of Residential Burglary and Theft are forthcoming against Tarrant.

The investigation continues and additional charges are pending.

Offenders:

  • Nicholas Batzler, 32, Loves Park, IL
  • James Tarrant, 43. Rockford, IL

The charges against the above listed defendants are merely allegations against them. The defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

The Rock County, Wisconsin, Sheriff’s press release of September 6th follows:

Since the beginning of August, the Rock County Sheriff’s Office has experienced an increase in residential burglaries.

During the investigation, Rock County Sheriff’s Office detectives learned that Boone, McHenry, Ogle and Winnebago counties were experiencing similar residential burglaries.

Authorities in Illinois had a description of a silver Cavalier that was possibly involved in their burglaries. On Friday, September 2, 2011 around 1:00 p.m., the RCSO received information of a suspicious silver color
vehicle on Pomeroy Road in Fulton Township. A RCSO detective responded to the area and observed a silver vehicle leaving a residence.

The detective stopped at the residence and discovered no one was home.

He was able to determine the residence had been burglarized.

Detectives located the vehicle again at an address on County F near Indianford.

Shortly after locating the vehicle, detectives observed the vehicle
leave the residence. There were two adult males in the vehicle. The vehicle was stopped by RCSO detectives on County F on the south side of Edgerton.

The two males were taken into custody.

Located in the back seat of the vehicle were several

  • flat screened televisions,
  • pillow cases containing items believed to be stolen,
  • a black powder rifle and
  • two handguns.

While detectives were on the scene of the traffic stop, dispatch received a call from a homeowner on State Highway 59 reporting their house had been recently burglarized. It was determined the two suspects were responsible for that residential burglary as well.

They were arrested on charges of burglary and theft and transported to the Rock County Jail. Detectives from

  • Boone,
  • McHenry,
  • Ogle and
  • Winnebago

counties are also investing these two suspects for burglaries in their respective counties.

All investigations are continuing.

The following arrests have been made:

  • Nicholas Jay Batzler: White Male, DOB 08/31/1979 from Loves Park, Illinois was arrested

by Rock County Detectives on four counts of Burglary and Theft.
