Crystal Lake Hot Air

September 03, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: Balloon, Crystal Lake, Sunset

From the title you might think this is about some politician who talks a lot, but says little.

But it’s not.

North Shore resident Annette Schmidt caught a hot air balloon over Crystal Lake and was kind enough to share some of her photos with McHenry County Blog.

What a wonderful photo of a hot air balloon over Crystal Lake that Annette Schmidt took!

Here’s a closer view:

Message of the Day – Splendor

Look at way the sun is peeking out from under a cloud just north of the McHenry Drive-In as the big, windy storm was almost over.

Message of the Day – A Sunset

October 14, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Color Blind, Crystal Lake, Crystal Lake Main Beach, Message of the Day, Sunset

Yesterday was the 20th anniversary of the Skinner family wedding.

A nice fall day like the day we got married.

The sunset was beautiful.

Even a color I can see–yellow.  (At least I think it’s yellow.  Maybe there arr other colors, too.  Help me out here, if there are.)

Message of the Day – A Silhouette

April 17, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Crystal Lake, Lake Avenue, Main Beach, Silhouette, Silhouettes, Sunset, Yellow

Near sunset on April 16, 2010, at the Lake Avenue stop sign overlooking Crystal Lake's Main Beach.

Driving home from Route 14 Friday night, the sunshine was so yellow as I drove along Lake Avenue to Crystal Lake’s Main Beach.

I snapped this picture while waiting for traffic to clear on the street that runs in front of the entrance to the Main Beach.

Message of the Day – Diving

August 25, 2009 By: Cal Skinner Category: Boys of Summer, CCAPOA, Dive. Crystal Lake, Diving, Gate 7, Gate 7 Beach, Lakewood, Message of the Day, Sunset

Three boys of summer were out on the raft at Gate 7 in Lakewood, Illinois, about 8 o’clock Monday night.

I had stopped to take a photo of the sunset.

I guess they decided it was time to go in.

The first one let out a shout after his dive toward the beach. Apparently, he had dried out while on the CCAPOA raft on the south side of Crystal Lake.

I kept taking photos and got this one of another of the youths diving in.

Message of the Day – An Egret

June 03, 2009 By: Cal Skinner Category: Crystal Lake, Egret, Gate 9, Lakewood, Sunset

You’ll remember how impressive I thought the sunset was after the thunderstorms on Monday.

At one point an egret that I had not noticed took off from near Gate 9 in Lakewood.

I don’t know whether it was this egret from the first week of July of 2007.

Or this one on the Gate 9 tree hanging over Crystal Lake at from the same week.

Maybe it’s the same one my son spotted taking off at the outlet in October.

Regardless, with the sunset colors, this egret was ready to go wherever it spends the night.

You would have thought it would have stuck around.

But, maybe birds are more color blind than I.

Message of the Day – After the Storm

June 02, 2009 By: Cal Skinner Category: After the Storm, Crystal Lake, Gate 7 Beach, Lakewood Fire Department, Sunset

Last night the sunset over Crystal Lake was magnificent.

It was storming hard when I picked up my son at South Elementary School at 3:45.

But, it cleared up enough for a great sunset.

I was standing on the shore and a pier at Lakewood’s Gate 7 taking pictures.

The view just kept getting better and better.

There was a strong wind from the northeast that had blown foam up on the grass, so it was not warm.

And there I was standing in a short sleeve shirt and shorts..

Although the wind chill factor must have been in the 40′s it was worth it.

For at least a half hour.

In the middle picture the sun’s reflection off Crystal Lake’s surface almost looks like the moon.

In the bottom picture, my color blind eyes told me that it looked Arizona.

Message of the Day – A Sunset

January 19, 2009 By: Cal Skinner Category: Echo, George W. Bush, Message of the Day, Sunset, Terrorist Attack

This was the sunset on last Monday as seen through the window next to our front door.

But, considering today is the last full day President George W. Bush will be in office, it is perhaps symbolic as well as beautiful.

As my wife would say,

“No attacks since 9-11. Thank your president.”

Message of the Day – Another Election Day Sunset

Message of the Day – Another Election Day Sunset

One of the highlights of election day at the Crystal Lake Park District Main Beach House was the sunset.

Yesterday I ran a rather late version.

This one was taken a bit earlier and I bragged that it was a “keeper.”

Which do you like better?
