Rutherford Headlines Koehler Fundraiser

May 31, 2012 By: Cal Skinner Category: Carolyn Schofield, Chuck Lutzow, Dan Rutherford, Dave McSweeney, Dee Beaubien, Jack Franks, Ken Koehler, Leslie Schermerhorn, Mike Chmiel, Mike Tryon, Tom McDermott, Yvonne Barnes

Ken Koehler and Dan Rutherford chat briefly after Rutherford's speech at Lakeside Center.

The guest speaker for McHenry County Board Chairman Ken Koehler’s Koehlerfest was State Treasurer Dan Rutherford.

Meeting at Lakeside Center’s dining room, Koehler introduced him as “a good friend of McHenry County.”

Some of the crowd at the 2012 Koehlerfest. At the table in the foreground is Chuck Lutzow and Judge Michael Chmiel.

The gathering of Koehler supporters was also “Chainsaw Jack” Franks’ prospective opponent Tonya Franklin’s “coming out party.”

Introduced to Koehler as the woman who was going to keep Jack Franks off his back, Franklin received nothing but encouragement.

He said he would be at the Special Meeting of the County Central Committee at 9 AM at D’Andrea’s in Crystal Lake on this Saturday morning.

Koehler noted that he is the only Republican elected official to take Franks on.

Tonya Franklin did some retail campaigning.

As Tonya worked the room, those trying to suppress turnout sufficiently so there will not be a quorum on Saturday morning were seen talking to Precinct Committeemen with whom she had talked.

Tom McDermott

While they were doing their thing, I was trying to find people to fill empty precincts.

One Koehler contributor seemed quite interested so I passed his name onto Tom McDermott, who heads the Algonquin Township Committee looking for people willing to work in the fall election.

I ran into former McHenry County Republican Party Chairman Jack Schaffer, who was State Senator in the 1970′s (and beyond), and introduced him to Tonya.

“Go get them,” he said encouragingly.

Other candidates were in attendance.

Working the room most systematically was GOP State Rep. candidate David McSweeney.

State Rep. candidate David McSweeney worked all the tables in the room.

He is still unopposed, although Dee Beaubien is circulating petitions to gain ballot access as an Independent.

To be a candidate, Beaubien has to file petition signatures in Springfield the same as Tonya Franklin.

Leslie Schermerhorn was accompanied by family members to Koehlerfest.

The woman slated to run for McHenry County Superintendent of Schools by the Central Committee, Leslie Schermerhorn, was in attendance with a number of family members.

McHenry County State’s attorney was in attendance.  He greeted Tonya Franklin warmly.

Yvonne Barnes

Carolyn Schofield

I also saw County Board candidates Yvonne Barnes, from Cary and running in District 1, and District 2 candidate Carolyn Schofield, currently serving on the Crystal Lake City Council.

District 5 candidate John Jung, who lives in Bull Valley and is the Republican Precinct Committeeman in the only Jack Franks precinct containing part of Crystal Lake, was at the event with his wife and newly-appointed Dorr Township Precinct Committeeman Josie.

If I missed a candidate, please let me know in a comment so I can complete the story.

Algonquin Township Board Appoints Russell Cardelli as Township Trustee

May 16, 2012 By: Cal Skinner Category: Algonquin Township, Chuck Lutzow, Joe Powalowski, Russell Cardelli, Tom McDermott, Township Government, Township Trustee

The Algonquin Township Board last summer.

Word from the Algonquin Township meeting is that Russell Cardelli of Algonquin was named to replace Joe Powalowski, who resigned.

Russell Cardelli

I interviewed Cardelli about the interviewing process.

“I was a little surprised.

“It seemed one of the other guys had been a trustee (Chuck Lutzow) and was a little better qualified.

Referring to Tom McDermott, Vice Chairman of the Algonquin Township Republican Central Committee, Cardelli said, “I just assumed someone like that would get the position.”

Asked what Township Trustees do, Cardelli said townships maintain the roads, they try to save the taxpayers money, they re-cycle old wood chips and give them away, among other things.

Cardelli has been a carpenter-contractor for thirty-five years in Algonquin, Lake in the Hills and Crystal Lake, and more recently “all over place.”

The five candidates not selected were

  • Robert Abraham, Lake In The Hills
  • Charles A. Lutzow, Crystal Lake
  • Thomas P. McDermott, Crystal Lake
  • Catherine Nash, Algonquin
  • Bob Simpson from Crystal Lake

Applicants Surface for Algonquin Township Trustee Vacancy

April 28, 2012 By: Cal Skinner Category: Algonquin Township, Catherine Nash, Chuck Lutzow, Dianne Klemm, Rob Abraham, Tom McDermott, Township Trustee

People who want to replace Algonquin Township Trustee Joe Powalowski, who resigned unexpectedly, have until April 30th to submit their resumes to Township Supervisor Dianne Klemm.

The Algonquin Township Board in 2010. Joe Powalowski is seen on the far left.

So far applications have been received from

  • Catherine Nash, Algonquin
  • Robert Abraham, Lake In The Hills
  • Thomas P. McDermott, Crystal Lake
  • Charles A. Lutzow, Crystal Lake

All are Republican Precinct Committeemen, but Nash.

The post pays $2,290 a year at this point. There is one meeting a month.

Rebecca Lee Re-elected Head of Algonquin Township Republicans

April 10, 2012 By: Cal Skinner Category: Algonquin Township, Algonquin Township Republican Central Committee, Andrew Gasser, Demetri Tsilimigras, Rebecca Lee, Tom McDermott, Uncategorized

In a weighted vote of the 21 out of 30 elected Republican Precinct Committeemen in Algonquin Township, incumbent Chairman Rebecca Lee edged out Vice Chairman Tom McDermott 1,726-1,532 to hear the GOP in McHenry County’s largest township for the next two years.

With precincts often having 200 Republican voters, Lee literally won by a margin of one committeeman’s votes.

Vice Chairman now and for the next two years will be McDermott.

Elected Secretary was Demitri Tsilimigras, who served the last two years as organization Treasurer.

Newcomer Andy Gasser was elected Treasurer.

All races except that for chairman were by acclamation.

McHenry County Republican Party Chairman Mike Tryon swears in Algonquin Township Republican Central Committee officers, from left to right, Vice Chairman Tom McDermott, Chairman Rebecca Lee, Treasurer Andy Gasser and Secretary Demetri Tsilimigras.

In her speech before election, Lee said that she had been involved in politics “my entire life,” that she had “enjoyed my last two years” and “relish[ed] the opportunity to serve again.”

“I want to maintain this part of McHenry County as a Republican stronghold.”

Karen McConnaughay Meets and Greets Local Republican Activists at Lakewood’s Lou Malnati’s

State Senate candidate Karen McConnaughay talks to McHenry County Board Chairman Ken Koehler and Jim Thompson, long-time Republican Precinct Committeeman and one of the intitators of the first Tea Party Demostration in Crystal Lake. In the background are Precinct Committeemen Bryon Javor and Jake Justen.

Kane County Board Chairman Karen McConnaughay brought her campaign for the Illinois State Senate to Lakewood’s Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria Thursday night.

Chatting near the entrance was State. Rep. Mike Tryon with District 2 County Board candidate Tom Wilbeck and Precinct Committeeman Tom McDermott.

Nothing like free eats to bring out a crowd.  And Lou Manati’s pizza.  What a treat!

State Rep. Mike Tryon chows down on Lou Manati's deep dish pizza. Also at the table, from left to right, are Republican Precinct Committeeman Rita Heuel, John O'Neill's wife Basia and Bo Strom, CEO of OnTarget, the shooting range going up north of Route 176.

The event featured high-profile politicians like State Rep. Mike Tryon. Tryon would be one of the State Representatives in the 33rd State Senate District.

Karen McConnaughay addresses the crowd.

McConnaughay outlined her accomplishments during her seven years in office.  They included achieving a better bond rating from the two major agencies.

Lots of folks from Grafton Township at this table. I see Randy Hutlgren's top campaign guy, Joe Calomino, front right, sitting across from his neighbor Dave Broxterman. To his right is Sue Russell. At the back left is Grafton Township Supervisor Linda Moore and Township GOP Chairman Tom Paznaski. At the head of the table is Anthony Paladino, co-captain to Precinct Committeeman Sam Paglini, who is sitting at his left.

Lots of talk about politics, of course.

County Board member Donna Kurtz was working the other back table, shaking hands with District 3 County Board candidate Joe Gottemoller here.. At the end is Precinct Committeeman and campaign consultant Cheryl Meyer. Local businesswoman Terry Greeno is front right, NRA leader Rich Young front left. To his left is Don Drzal, Huntley School Board member and write-in candidate for Precinct Committeeman

People looking for yard sign sites.

Campaign assistant Becky Kress can be seen to the left of Karen McConnaughay's back. John McGuire, his two daughters and a friend round out the group.

Others discussing court proceedings and Judge Gordon Graham’s order to pay a couple hundred more thousand dollars to the Special Prosecutors Henry Tonigan and Thomas McQueen and (their expensive investigators at Quest) who had no case against State’s Attorney Lou Bianchi.

McHenry County Republican Central Committee Treasurer Fred Wickham was discussing things with Karen McConnaughay. Wickham Interiors' Lynn Wickham was present, too.

At the end of event, campaign assistant Becky Cress was handing out McConnaughay tee shirts.

Grafton Township Republican Central Committee Tom Poznanski held up one of the McConnaughy tee shirts for me.

Marengo Settlers Day Parade – State Legislative Politics, etc.

October 10, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: Jack Franks, Marengo, Pam Althoff, Soulful Sinners, Tina Hill, Tom McDermott

Yesterday after the Settlers Day Parade I put together some photos and text about the part through the appearance of Congressman Joe Walsh’s appearance.

Marengo Indians Marching Band drummers.

I wondered how a politician who did not represent the area got to come first, right after the Marengo Marching Indians Band.

Then I got the idea that perhaps the elected officials and candidates may have  been ordered by importance of the office they held or sought.

That would explain a congressman’s coming before state legislators.

Congressman Walsh, I have been told, got a healthy reception from parade participants before it started and along the parade route.  Certainly, I saw a fair degree of face recognition that wasn’t from seeing him in McHenry County.  His TV appearances must have giving a number of participants a sense of knowing him.

Two people wearing different vintages of Jack Franks' tee shirts carried the bipartisan banner.

Next up was a joint entry similar to the one put together in by Republican State Senator Pam Althoff and hometown boy Democrat State Rep. Jack Franks.

Jack Franks' convertible.

First came Franks’ Cadillac convertible, back seat empty.  For the Johnsburg Parade, Franks was in Cuba.

Tina Hill, who works in the office which Mike Tryon and Pam Althoff share, drove Althoff's parade truck.

Right behind was McHenry County Board member Tina Hill driving a big black truck with Althoff’s name on the door.

People walked with the legislative contingent handing out candy and carrying signs.

There were walkers, mainly for Franks.

When volunteers ran out fo candy, they got more from the pickup truck.

The candy was replenished from a truck carrying a sign saying, “We (heart) Marengo.

Jack Franks' volunteers were sprinting to catch up with the candy supplies.

There was a long space behind the candy truck.

More leisurely Jack Franks' volunteers.

Others who didn’t get rid of their candy so fast were walking.

Candy to hold Marengo young people over until Halloween.

Candy was certainly the draw for the youngsters.

There was a lot of space before the next entry.

And the Franks’ volunteers kept coming in the big gap behind the entry’s vehicles.

Jack Franks was running to catch up with his volunteers.

“Would Jack Franks be a no show in his hometown the way he was in Johnsburg?” I was thinking.

Jack Franks make the turn on the run.

No, he followed his 200 McHenry Fiesta Days Parade technique of catching up with his walkers  by running.

Crystal Lake-based Soulful Sinners, which I think I heard the announcer say were participating in their 19th Settlers Day Parade.

Right behind was music by Tom McDermott’s Soulful Sinners.

Middle school students from Marengo-Union 165 Grade School District were right behind Tom McDermott's old fire engine.

There were still more Franks’ volunteers passing out something frozen after the Soulful Sinners and the District 165.

Music for any occastion is what Just Duet advertised.

Next was the first commercial entry.  Unlike Johnsburg, Lake in the Hills and Crystal Lake, which all had a lot of businesses, there weren’t many in the Settlers Day Parade.

White Lion Real Estate was another commercial entry.

White Lion Real Estate had a white trailer with a lion’s face on the front and a long white tail behind.  There was also a costumed white lion.

How did Marengo entice a band from Evergreen Park, just south of Chicago's border, I wondered.

I kept looking for more politicians, of course, but rounding the corner was another band.

The Evergreen Park Marching Band trumpet players made a straight line as they passed.

The music was good, so I wasn’t complaining.  After all I could get in the shade anytime I wanted to.

The next entry had McHenry County officials.

But, we’ll cover that tomorrow.

The Lake in the Hills Sunset Festival Parade

September 04, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Denise Barreto, Donna Kurtz, Elgin Sweeper, Jean Bianchi, Jim Kennedy, John Yung, Keith Nygren, Ken Koehler, Lake In the Hills, Lou Bianchi, Mark Booras, McHenry County Democratic Central Committee, McHenry County Democrats, Mike Bisset, Mike Mahon, Motorcycle Rider, Motorcycles, Motorcyclist, Pam Althoff, Parade, Paula Yensen, Pets for Skinner, Sally Wiggins, Sinful Saints, Tina Hill, Tom McDermott

What great timing I had. As I was arriving the parade was about ready to kick off and a helpful policeman, after figuring out that I really didn’t want to head down the street toward the front of the parade, pointed me to the parking area.

I could hear the sirens as I walked to the parade route.

As I was walking toward the street, I could see healthy crowds lining the street.

I made it just in time for the color guard.

Most people were standing in respect to the American Flag.

Turstee Denise Barreto throws candy to the crowd.

Considering the aversion that Crystal Lake has to throwing candy, I was surprised that Lake in the Hills allows it. There may have been other elected village officials, but, not knowing most of the players, I couldn’t pick them out. Certainly, there were not cars with signs, as was the case in Algonquin’s Founders Days Parade.

Next came the Sheriff’s contingent.

The leader is from the Sheriff's Department.

First four motorcycles. Two from the Sheriff’s department and two, I believe, from the Conservation District.

Sheriff Keith Nygren rode the parade route with his wife.

Next came Sheriff Keith Nygren and his wife Marge. Nygren seems to have lost some weight over the summer.

Part of Sheriff's Keith Nygren's parade entry.

Behind Nygren’s car was the Crime Prevention Trailer, pulled by the Community Relations vehicle.

The Sinful Saints blasted away on top of an old fire engine.

What was behind wasn’t political, except for the trombone player in the Dixieland band called Sinful Saints. He’s Republican precinct committeeman Tom McDermott.

A Mark Kirk sticker guy came past in a lull in the parade. No sign of Kirk’s contingent, however.

Can you tell the wind was blowing at the parade? The tee shirt says, "I want an independent judiciary in McHenry County." Naturally, there was a pitch for Sally Wiggins' election.

Another sticker person wasn’t far behind. By the time I figured out that she was passing out stickers for Sally Wiggins, the Independent candidate for Circuit Court Judge, the young woman had passed me. So I called out and asked if I could take a photo of her sweat shirt. I now see it was a tee shirt. You see the result above.

Look at the Cub Scout in the middle. He has both feet off the ground.

This group of Cub Scouts deserves a notice for its sheer exuberance. I think it’s Pack 458 of Huntley, but the photo really doesn’t have a good view of the number.

Here's the Jaycees float announcing their intention of creating the world's largest soda float on Sunday at the Sunst Festival.

The Jaycees, Lake in the Hills, I would presume, are trying for a world record soda float on Sunday. Really. That’s what the sign says.

The Summers Academy of Dance performer provided this wonderful shadow.

At this point, I found a young person who had been “stickered.” There was one for Mark Kirk and another for Sally Wiggins.

I have never heard of the Hearts of Gold organization, which seems to be based in Algonquin, but since many people are in hard times, I thought you ought to know about it.

The leading edge of the County Democrats’ contingent soon came into view.

The Democrats came into sight. A big red convertible with flags flying was surrounded by marchers wearing tee shirts.

It seemed to be a family affair.

Others carried yard signs and, I’m guessing, passed out candy.

Mike Mahon emphasized that he was from Lake in the Hills with everyone he spoke to.

Next came the Democratic Party candidate for Sheriff. He introduced himself and told those lining the parade route that he was from Lake in the Hills.

Mike Mahon was falling behind his parade contingent as he worked the crowd.

It is rare for a candidate to get beyond the front row of parade watchers, but Mahon was doing it on the south side of the street.

Riding on a motorcycle is Democratic Party congessional candidate George Gaulrapp. Handing out pamphlets with him is Democratic Party Chairman Mike Bisset.

State Rep. David Miller, who is running for State Comptroller, had a couple of young men in the parade, so, although I thought the Democrats were gone, I saw more were coming.

The Democratic Party banner has its web site address, mchenrycountydems.com, and phone number, 815-788-9540.

And, from the banner being carried by Mary Erlenborn and Mike Bisset’s wife, Paula Yensen, it appears that what I earlier thought was the Democratic Party float was really one for Mike Mahon.

Mark Booras, I figured out, is the Democratic Party candidate running against McHenry County Board Chairman Ken Koehler and McHenry County College Board member Donna Kurtz.

A name I didn’t know came into view: Mark Booras.

“Are you Mark Booras?” I asked. Turns out the man carrying the sign was his brother, so I asked if he were at the parade

The Lake in the Hills Parade is the first indication that I've seen that District 2 Democratic Party county board candidate Mark Booras be planning a campaign.

He was.

Across the street. “So, you’re the Democrat running for county board?” I said.

I thought it was pretty bold of Mark Booras to be kissing children along the parade route. Turns out it was his child.

He agreed he was and, showing that he had learned some political tricks, he kissed a child.

When I remarked on it, he told me it was his child.

McHenry County State's Attorney Lou Bianchi's wife Jean was passing out literature.

Next I saw Jean Bianchi passing out something colorful, which I didn’t get a copy of.

McHenry County State's Attorney Lou Bianchi waved at the crowd.

McHenry County State’s Attorney Lou Bianchi was riding in a yellow convertible and waved at the camera. Bianchi is not up for election.  Bianchi’s contingent were acting as if this were a campaign year.

Walkers for Sheriff Keith Nygren's campaign.

Next came the walking contingent for Sheriff Keith Nygren.

Dog for Nygren.

Brent Smith’s son had a dog wearing a Nygren tee shirt. It reminded me of my first campaign for state representative when Coventry Republican Precinct Committeeman claimed he was forming “Pets for Skinner.”

With the starts and stops in a parade this probably shows Donna Kurtz has good balance.

Next was McHenry County College Board member Donna Kurtz riding on the front of a bicycle. She is running for county board. Kurtz and Ken Koehler are on the Republican ballot, while Mark Booras is on the Democratic Party side of the ballot.

The Jacobs High School Band marched past next.

I’m a percussion section fan.

The leading edge of the Mark Kirk contingent at the parade.

Behind me near the sidewalk, I noticed a young lady passing out Kirk stickers.

In the distance, one could see the next entrant was U.S. Senate candidate Mark Kirk's contingent.

On the street behind the Medinah Temple small motorcycle guys, the Mark Kirk marchers could be seen.

The red convertible had State Senator Pam Althoff and State Rep. Mike Tryon’s signs affixed to it.

Mark Kirk waved at the Lake in the Hills crowd.

As in Crystal Lake, Congressman Kirk waved to the crowd and thanked them for coming.

Yard signs didn't pose the same problem in the wind that banners did.

The wind was blowing hard enough that some banner holders could not keep their unweighted signs down so they could be read.

Pal Althoff walked by next.

State Senator Pam Althoff was handing out bubble gum at the parade.

Tina Hill

On the back of the pick-up truck rode County Board member Tina Hill.

John Jung

County Board candidate John Jung was handing out Double Bubble, too. I asked for three and got them.  Hill and Jung are running mates in District 5, trying to edge out incumbent Democrat Jim Kennedy, who beat Perry Moy four years ago.

Two more Cub Scout Packs followed.

Cub Scout Pack 369's float.

The first was from Lake in the Hills and I can read the number on its waving flag.

Cub Scout Pack 167.

Next marched Huntley’s Cub Scout Pack 167.

McHenry County Defenders offer clean-up service.

The McHenry County Environmental Defenders continued its tradition of being the last parade entry with members carrying large bags for plastic bottles.

I didn't see any animals, so I'm not sure what this Elgin Sweeper was trying to clean up.

Bringing up the rear was a huge Elgin Sweeper.

Algonquin Township Republicans Select Leaders

February 24, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Algonquin Township, Algonquin Township Republican Central Committee, Demetri Tsilimigras, Demetrios Tsilimigras, Lou Bianchi, McHenry County State's Attorney, Rebecca Lee, Tom McDermott

Map of Algonquin Township showing precincts. Algonquin Township has more people than any of the sixteen other townships in McHenry County.

The fourth generation of a Cary political family has stepped to the fore to lead the Algonquin Township Republican Central Committee.

Rebecca Lee, daughter of Algonquin Township Road Commissioner Bob Miller and County Board member Anna May Miller, was elected to head the organization. Her grandfather and great-grandfather also serve as township highway commissioner.

Vice Chairman will continue to be Tom McDermott of Crystal Lake.

Mark Gerhardt from Downtown Algonquin will serve as secretary.

Rounding out the leadership team is McHenry County Assistant State’s Attorney Demetrios Tsilimigras.

Lee, Gerhardt and Tsilimigras are all attorneys. All have worked at one time or another as assistant state’s attorneys in McHenry County. Gerhardt has also served in Cook County’s office. Tsilimigras worked for the Kane County State’s Attorney before coming to work for Lou Bianchi.

Both Gerhardt and Tsilimigras were elected precinct committeeman for the first time February 2nd.

McHenry County Republican Party Chairman Mike Tryon, a precinct committeeman in Algonquin Township, but in Springfield for mid-week, asked for an indication committeemen support for 16th Congressional District State Central Committeeman candidates. Tryon said he would support whomever the majority supported at the annual convention, according to Karla Dobbeck, the woman who was head of the township central committee until stepping down last night.

Incumbent State Senator Dave Syverson is facing off against challenger Joe Wiegand.

With 27 committeemen present, only seven indicated a preference.

The vote was six for Wiegand and one for Syverson.

Cal Skinner spoke in favor of Wiegand. Dobbeck said she was Syverson’s chairwoman and represented him in McHenry County, while the state senator covered the Rockford area and points west.

Skinner said he had not seen Syverson in McHenry County since he had rejoined the central committee two years ago. He pointed out that Wiegand was familiar with the political arena having run unsuccessfully for state representative twice, having served on the DeKalb County Board and, while there, having spearheaded the referendum to impose the Property Tax Cap over the strong objections of local governments and school districts.

McHenry County Fair Republicans

August 05, 2008 By: Cal Skinner Category: Dwight Roberts, John O'Neill, Joyce Story, Marlene Lantz, Mary Donner, Steve Greenberg, Tom McDermott

Yesterday, I wrote about the double-wide Democratic Party booth at the McHenry County Fair. Because I found more candidates there than at the Republican booth, I did a story on the Dems first.

Today, it’s the Republicans turn.

The only candidates I saw were McHenry County Coroner Marlene Lantz and McHenry County Board member Mary Donner.

They were behind the table of literature with McHenry Township Precinct Committeeman and Elementary School District 15 School Board member John O’Neill.

Standing in front of the table helping interest some grade school students was McHenry County Board member Dan Shea. The former Fox River Grove Village President is retiring this year.

After visiting with the Libertarians and the Democrats, I circled back to see if any other candidates were at the GOP booth, but there weren’t.

O’Neill was still there with McHenry Township Precinct Committee Joyce Story and Steve Greenberg staffer Dwight Roberts. Crystal Lake Precinct Committeeman Tom McDermott was just leaving, but he agreed to be in the picture.
