Harry Truman’s “Pay to Play” White House Poker Games

April 19, 2009 By: Cal Skinner Category: Harry Truman, Jesse Jackson Jr., Poker, Tom Roeser, Walter Trohan

April 14, 2009, blogger and WLS-Radio Sunday night talk show host Tom Roeser reveals that President Harry S Truman played poker with rich guys at the White House and won enough to pay off the debts he owed from running his failing haberdasher store.

Here’s part of what is in the oral history of just deceased Chicago Tribune Washington Bureau Chief Walter Trohan, which is hidden away at the Truman Library:

“Then Trohan found out why Truman had told (U.S. Senator Burton) Wheeler (of Montana) why he couldn’t afford to play. Those who played were brokers, rich men, rich senators, rich lobbyists. At the end of the evening, Truman toted up what they owed him and gave his players bills. Then and only then did Truman put a fixed price on each chip. He didn’t win all the time but he won enough at huge stakes that when the checks flowed, his debt on the haberdasher store started to evaporate.

“People who contributed found themselves named to the federal bench, one to the Federal Reserve. It was a lovely way for Truman to eradicate his debts, have fun with the boys and also entertain a newsman like Trohan with delicious news tips.

“So those of us who are ready to faint because Jesse Jackson, Jr. might have consorted with some Indians to raise dough for Blago to get himself named to the Senate…should recall the evil old days under a man who is purported to have been on of the best presidents we ever had.”

Rod Blagojevich’s Enablers

January 06, 2009 By: Cal Skinner Category: Do-Gooders, Enabler, Mike Lawrence, Rod Blagojevich, Tom Roeser

No, this is not about Roland Burris, but it could be, as Tom Roeser points out.Former Lee Newspapers’ Springfield Bureau Chief and Jim Edgar’s Press Secretary and policy adviser Mike Lawrence has written a column for the Chicago Tribune

Lawrence points out how Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich was propped up by

“do-gooders”

The embattled governor

“was reinforced by well meaning individuals and groups seeking his support seeking his support for worthy causes or fearing retribution if they challenged him.”

Lawrence specifically mentions supporters of

“early childhood education and expanded health-care coverage.”

Plus

“presidents of our largest universities” who “acquiesced to budget cuts and the governor’s ridicule of higher education.”

“Children’s champions, education leaders, major health-care providers and grant recipients hailed him” and “flanked him” in press conferences.

Lawrence always did have a way with words and an intolerance for corruption.

For my part of this article, I’ll show you some of the enablers who appeared in my mailbox to promote Blagojevich’s re-election.

Three direct mail pieces from the Blagojevich campaign were sent to
my mailbox.

And I’ve voted in every Republican primary election since I was old enough to register in 1964.

He had that much money to spend in 2006.

That’s what pay-to-play money will buy an incumbent Illinois governor.

All images can be enlarged by clicking on them.

For all four panels of the third mailing seen above, which was the first one I received, click here.

The article on the second mailing is here.

The article on the third mailing that Blagojevich sent to Republicans is here.

Takes One to Know One

September 26, 2008 By: Cal Skinner Category: Bill Daley, Lobbyist, Quaker Oats, SBC, Tom Roeser

And long-time Quaker Oats lobbyist Tom Roeser, who writes a quite insightful blog, knows that Mayor Richard Daley’s brother Bill was a lobbyist.

Whether he bothered to register as a lobbyist or not, he exerted political influence on behalf of SBC during the first year of Governor Rod Blagojevich’s administration to pass a bill lickity split. And Roeser saw him often in Washington.

Here’s most of his biting commentary:

“In a TV ad, John McCain listed Bill Daley as a lobbyist which has drawn a shout of anger and resentment from Daley since he has never been registered as a lobbyist. The shout he gave off was that of a wounded animal, unjustly shot at, in a forest.

“Dear me, as one who went to Washington weekly as a lobbyist for Quaker Oats for 27 years and would frequently see Bill Daley on the early morning UAL or American Airlines 7:30 a.m. Red Eye, I am utterly aghast that all the while, big firms were sending Bill Daley to D. C. because of his expertise on the technical end of Big Business…and not because his name was Daley, that he was the mayor’s son and mayor’s brother but because he was so expert in business economics. All the time I thought it was because he was an expert at plying his trade with Democratic power brokers who would recall his surname with fondness.

“That is amazing to me and I apologize fully to Mr. Daley since I…with my cynical Chicago upbringing…figured that a top son of the old Mayor might be hired by SBC and the others for his savvy with Democratic pols.

“All the times I saw him chomping steaks with Democratic power lords at Morton’s of Chicago on the edge of Georgetown and tippling drinks at Hill fund-raisers he was sharing his great knowledge of the economy and his scientific expertise with the telecommunications industry without any political connection…and was not seeking favor with the power people which is what a lobbyist is supposed to do.

“How I misjudged Daley all these years!

“Indeed, John McCain should be ashamed of himself for saying that Daley was lobbyist.

“Ergo: Daley was NOT a lobbyist or applied pressure or gratification to lawmakers in return for favors because Daley never registered as a lobbyist!”

Who’s Having the Most Fun?

December 22, 2007 By: Cal Skinner Category: International Plaza, Joe Casarone, Libertarian, Lisa Wogan, Ron Paul, Ron Paul Blimp, Scott Bludorn, Tom Roeser

Put a bunch of political amateurs together behind a candidate they fervently believe in and you get some interesting results.

That’s what seems to be happening in the Ron Paul campaign.

These folks know they are backing a long shot, but they have accomplished something hard-charging Mike Huckabee hasn’t.

The volunteers have raised money for their candidate.

$4 million November 5th.

A record for one day.

$6 million last Sunday.

Another record for one day.

They opened a headquarters in Arlington Heights. It was the only the 3rd GOP presidential headquarters opened in Illinois, I heard.

Not coincidentally, it was in the International Plaza, a shopping center where libertarian-minded individuals campaigned last winter and spring against the Arlington Heights mothers’ and fathers’ trying to condemn the property so a big box store could replace immigrant-owned stores.

More sales tax, don’t you know?

I see one of the leaders, Scott Bludorn, in that effort is now the Field Director of the Illinois effort.

“The Greater Chicago Ron Paul Meetup group, which was formed in May, currently claims more than 950 members,” Illinois press person Lisa Wogan wrote.

Think any other Illinois Republican presidential candidate can identify almost 1,000 volunteers in the Chicago area?

They’re planning a “Ron Paul Penguin and Polar Bear Sign Wave in Arlington Heights” at Palatine and Rand Roads in Arlington Heights at 11 this Saturday morning.

Last Monday, Wogan sent out a press release of the opening of a Chicago headquarters at 3168 N. Lincoln Avenue. The phone number is 773-935-3733.

Now, this may be the Republican version of 2004’s Howard Dean campaign. It has been cited in a front page Tribune story as having internet similarities.

But I don’t remember Dean’s campaign coming up with innovations like the Ron Paul Blimp.

And what presidential candidate did you see with a parade float this summer? Ron Paul had one in Elgin.

Who had the most spirited volunteers at the Illinois State Fair’s Republican Day this summer?

Who’s had the biggest rally in Illinois?

Back in September, yet.

And, although Illinois weather is not conducive to blimps in January, the Ron Paul Blimp effort shows the imagination and commitment among his volunteers.

Sunday, Illinois Ron Paul coordinator Joe Cesarone will be on Tom Roeser’s on WLS Radio (890 on the AM dial) from 8-9. Roeser has written hostilely about Dr. Paul’s campaign, so it should be a spirited show.

= = = = =
Don’t you wish we were in weather good enough to have a blimp in Illinois?

The rally was at the Hyatt Regency in mid-September. The headquarters shown is the one in Arlington Heights.

You can see Scott Bludorn standing in front of a map of Arlington Heights when the TIF fight was going on.

In the reproduction of the top of McHenry County Blog’s article about Dr. Ron Paul’s newfound respect in the Tribune, you can see the “lonely guy” picture run the month before in its Tempo section and the more typical “candidate” photo that accompanied the recent front page article.

The parade line up was of Fox Vally Libertarians in Elgin this summer. They have marched in Crystal Lake’s 4th of July Parade previously, emphasizing abuses of Homeland security and even had George Ryan in the jail in 2000, but boycotted it this year because parade organizers wanted to limit their Freedom of Speech, as they did for McHenry County Peace Group. That led to the McHenry County Democrats parade boycott.

Tom Roeser Donates Track to District 300’s Lakewood School

September 28, 2007 By: Cal Skinner Category: District 300, Lakewood School, Leann Granell, Otto Engineering, Tim Loversky, Tom Roeser, Track

An invitation has been sent to a 10 AM Saturday recognition ceremony to honor Otto Engineering’s head guy, Tom Roeser, and other who donated money, material or labor for Lakewood School’s track.

Lakewood Principal Tim Loversky wrote in an email:

The Lakewood staff and students will then stay to plant some landscaping plants that have been donated and to beautify our track area, and to have a hotdog lunch. You are welcome to stay and work, but I am only hoping that you can come for the dedication.

One of my PE teachers, Leann Granell, has made an amazing effort to make this happen from beginning to end. I hope you will be able to join us for this fun event.
