The Taxman

October 12, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: 911 Call, Chris Coons, Christine O'Donnell, Delaware, Property Tax, Property Tax Bill, Tax Hike, Tax Hiker, Tax Man, Taxman, U.S. Senate, United States Senate

If anyone were running against a tax hiker in Illinois–state or local–this would be a marvelous template.  It’s a TV ad being run by Delaware’s Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate Christine O’Donnell against Democrat Chris Coons.

There are stark white on black messages in the TV ad from Christine O'Donnell.

Taxing 911 calls comes into play.

Property taxes come into play in the ad.

The ad's implication is that inheritance taxes are an issue.

"He's taxing everything out here."

Libertarians on Fall Ballot

August 27, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Alexi Giannoulias, Judy Baar Topinka, Julie Fox, Mark Kirk, State Comptroller, State Treasurer, United States Senate

Libertarian Party candidate for State Comptroller Julie Fox, a Certified Public Accountant, speaks to Crystal Lake's April 15, 2010, TEA Party crowd . She wasn't on the ballot officially then. Now she is. Her slate was certified today.

Republican candidate for U.S. Senate Mark Kirk might be a bit more worried than he was yesterday.

Alexi Giannoulias

Mark Kirk

He wasn’t leading his opponent Alexi Giannoulias, but the poll differences were pretty much within the margin of error.

But, now those who believe him too liberal have an alternative in the Libertarian Party candidate.

The Libertarians’ petition were challenged by supporters of the Republican Party slate, but, today, the Illinois State Board of Elections decided the party slate got the required 25,000 signatures.

Coincidentally, the Certified Public Accountant who led the 2002 ticket in votes when I was running for governor, Julie Fox, is holding a fund raiser in Wonder Lake on Saturday afternoon. Call 847-287-1432 for details.

Her candidacy might make former State Treasurer, 2006 GOP gubernatorial candidate and 2010 Republican candidate for State Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka nervous, too.

Here’s the Libertarian Party press release:

Ballot Access Victory for our Libertarian State-Wide Candidates

Today, the Illinois State Board of Elections certified, by unanimous vote, the state-wide Libertarian candidates for the ballot in the November election:

  • Lex Green for Governor,
  • Ed Rutledge for Lt. Governor,
  • Bill Malan for Attorney General,
  • Julie Fox for Comptroller,
  • Josh Hanson for Secretary of State,
  • James Pauly for Treasurer, and
  • Mike Labno for US Senate.

Watch the ABC News clip from the State Board of Elections office.

Many thanks to all who volunteered and donated to make this victory possible. Without the people who collected signatures, mentored petitioners, notarized petitions, helped assemble the filing, did data entry and address research, staffed the challenge, and the many other steps involved; we would not be poised to make history this November.

A Prediction for the November Election

August 04, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Establilshed Party, Green Party, LeAlan Jones, Power Party, Special Election, United States Senate

The article is tiny, but the significance great of this Tribune article announcing that Green Party candidate LeAlan Jones will be on the special ballot for U.S. Senate in November.

With the rules for November’s special U.S. Senate election now laid down by Federal Judge John Grady, it is clear that Green candidate LeAlan Jones is going to be the big winner.

It’s not that he’s going to be elected.

LeAlan Jones

It’s that all sorts of people will be fed up with the two power party candidates by election day.

They will probably gravitate to those two for the six-year term.

But, for the six-week term.?

That could be another matter.

Four years ago, Green Party gubernatorial candidate won about 10% of the vote.

That is significant because it gave the Green Party power party status. State law uses the words “established party.”

That designation means people affiliated with such a party need to get many, many fewer signatures to get on the ballot that non-established party candidates and independents.

My prediction is that LeAlan Jones will receive more than the 5 percentage points needed to continue the “established party” status.

That means those who want to run for local partisan office and are willing to call themselves “Greens” can easily get on the ballot.

For example, this year in county board District 5, the Green Party needed .5% of 711 votes or 4 signatures. That was enough to put Frank Wedig on the ballot, but I imagine he got more.

Will Corporate Money Come in Against Mark Kirk?

January 21, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Campaign Contributions, FEC, Federal Elections Commission, John Paul Stevens, Mark Kirk, United States Senate

Now the the United States Supreme Court has ruled that corporations and unions can use non-PAC funds out of their general treasuries to support or oppose Federal candidates for office, the question in my head is whether corporations will start contributing to one of Congressman Mark Kirk’s opponents.

Maybe the low limits applicable to individuals would apply to “natural persons,” as dissenter Justice John Paul Stevens wrote.

If so, no potential problem for Kirk.

If not…there might be a lot more ads on television.

I see from this article that there are now no limits on corporate contributions in Federal elections.

“‘It is a sweeping decision. In one opinion, the Court struck down all bans on corporate independent spending,’ said Marc Elias, a leading Dem election lawyer at Perkins Coie,” the article in Hotline on call says.

Robert Kelner, a GOP election lawyer at Covington & Burling, thinks most money will flow through trade associations, although individual companies may buy ads themselves.

Under current Illinois law corporations and unions can contribute unlimited amounts to political campaigns.

A limit of $5,000 is set to go into effect next election cycle, but it does not pertain to independent expenditures.

Whether that limit for corporation contributions to Political Action Committee’s will be challenged remains to be seen.

When Liberals Call Burris A “Liar”

February 17, 2009 By: Cal Skinner Category: Liar, Mark Brown, Neil Steinberg, Roland Burris, United States Senate

Two Chicago Sun-Times reporters called newly appointed United States Roland Burris a “liar” yesterday.

The angriest was Mark Brown.

“The problem is that if he couldn’t tell the whole truth previously, why should anyone believe he’s telling the truth now.

“I don’t,” Brown wrote.

The second was Neil Steinberg.

“Roland Burris lied on his job application. He lied, under oath, about Rod Blagojevich hitting him up for money before he was tapped to fill Barack Obama’s seat,” Steinberg said in his column.

“Any middle manager caught doing the same would be out on his ear.”

No Need for Jesse to Flip

January 09, 2009 By: Cal Skinner Category: Harry Reid, Illinois Secretary of State, Jesse White, Jesse White Tumbler, Rod Blagojevich, Roland Burris, United States Senate

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White refused to sign Governor Rod Blagojevich’s appointment of paperwork for Roland Burris as United States Senate.

Now the Illinois Supreme Court has ruled that White’s signature is not needed.

White had maintained that his signature was not necessary.

So White won’t have to flip like one of his skilled tumblers.

The move is up to the United Senate now.

What will the weak Harry Reid do now?

The Jesse White Tumblers were in Crystal Lake at the corner of Dole and Crystal Lake Avenues at the 4th of July Parade in 2007.

Dick Durbin Challenger Steve Sauerberg Seeks Volunteers

August 05, 2008 By: Cal Skinner Category: Dick Durbin, Jim Thompson, Steve Sauerberg, United States Senate

Former Crystal Lake precinct committeeman Jim Thompson is trying to recruit assistance for the Steve Sauerberg for United States Senate campaign. Sauerberg is challenging the number two Democrat in the U.S. Senate, Dick Durbin.

He sent out the following email:

TO: ALGONQUIN TOWNSHIP PRECINCT COMMITTEEMEN

FROM: JIM THOMPSON

Hello. I was a precinct committeeman for 10 years for Algonquin 26 (north and east of Coventry school). Now I am volunteering with the Steve Sauerberg campaign for US Senate.

This is an unusual election. We have statewide infighting among Democrats and a controversial Democratic presidential candidate. But one would get the impression from our news media that there is only discontent with Bush and the Republicans. I believe this is not so. There is evidence that people are aware of the contrast in platform and character between John McCain and the likely Democratic nominee. People must be aware of the problems with our state Democratic government.

Thus I believe this is actually an opportune time for Republicans to win, if we work hard and early. Steve Sauerberg has not gotten the publicity he deserves. If he does I think he can be swept along by coattails of a Republican trend as well as his own character and competence.

To this end, I believe we should work proactively NOW, before the GOP convention. He has brochures, signs and bumper stickers at our new McHenry County GOP election headquarters at 5501 Northwest Highway, Crystal Lake IL 60014 (on the south side of the street opposite Barnes and Noble book store. I do work there and can get some for you.

So how about it? Do you want a bumper sticker for your car? Do you have acquaintances who might want one? If people want to know more about him, we have brochures. Or refer them to the website www.sauerberg2008.com. (Signs do not go up for awhile.)

We need to get the word out NOW. So what can I get you? I can personally deliver or mail you what you need. And by the way, do you want a McCain sticker also?
