Message of the Day – Grief

April 14, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Arlington Heights, Crystal Lake, Huntley Road, Memorial, Roadside Memorial, Vanessa Tobey, Waterford Cut

Vanessa Tobey Memorial on Huntley Road south of Waterford Cut in Crystal Lake the night of April 13, 2010.

As I was driving to Huntley for Grafton Township’s Annual Town Meeting, I noticed a memorial on Huntley Road south of Waterford Cut.

That’s apparently near where the place where the car crash that killed Vanessa Tobey took place.

I was a bit late, so I didn’t stop and turn around to take a picture.

On my way back to Crystal Lake a bit after ten o’clock, I saw a couple of cars and some young people standing around the memorial.

I stopped and asked if I could take a picture. A couple were shy, so I asked if I could just photograph their legs.

I asked if they were from Arlington Heights and they said they were.

Vanessa Tobey’s Family Offers Thanks to Good Samaritan Evan

April 12, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Auto Accident, Crysal Lake, Huntley Road, Vanessa Tobey, Waterford Cut

A comment came from Crystal Lake’s Evan after Vanessa Tobey was untimely killed in an automobile crash on Huntley Road and Waterford cut Saturday night just before midnight:

I was the first one to the scene as I was on way home from work. I immediately called 911, I did everything in my power to help these people.

I never knew Vanessa or her family, But I held her until the fire rescue arrived.

I wont ever forget what happened last night, and even though I never knew Vanessa, I will never forget her either.

Life is a very delicate thing, and every moment is precious, God works in ways we may never understand, But I know without ever knowing Vanessa that she has gone to a better place, and it angers me sometimes that we can never put the pieces together on why tragedies like this occur.

But i believe that for some reason God needed Vanessa, and that she will live on forever in everyone that knew and loved her.

I never knew you Vanessa, But I will never forget you….RIP

I am blessed to be able to pass on the following message that just arrived from Vanessa’s family to Evan:

Evan,We don’t know you, but from our family we want to Thank You for coming to help our precious Vanessa. Knowing someone like you were there to comfort and support her in her final breathes is something we are so greatful for. You are a true angel for doing what you did and again thank you for trying to help her. God sees what good you have done.

Sincerely,

The Tobey Family

Huntley Road Crash Death Report Released by Crystal Lake Police

April 11, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: Car Accident, Crystal Lake, Crystal Lake Police, Huntley Road, Vanessa Tobey, Waterford Cut

Here’s the unedited report from the Crystal Lake Police Department:

On Saturday, April 10th, 2010 at 11:48 PM, Crystal Lake Police and Fire Rescue Departments responded to the area of Huntley Road and Waterford Cut to the scene of a motor vehicle crash. Upon arrival, emergency crews determined that two vehicles had been involved.

It has been determined a 2001 Pontiac Trans Am, operated by Kyle J. Sievert (23) of Arlington Heights had been traveling west on Waterford Cut before turning southbound onto Huntley Road.

Sievert reportedly lost control of the Pontiac and entered into the northbound lane of Huntley Road, in the path of a 1994 Jeep Cherokee, operated by Mark A. Maioni (34) of Crystal Lake.

The vehicles collided within the northbound lane, with the passenger side of the Pontiac impacting the front of the Jeep.

The vehicles then left the roadway and came to rest on the east shoulder of Huntley Road, approximately 250 Feet South of Waterford Cut.

Rescue personnel removed Sievert and three passengers from the Pontiac:

  • Mariana Mitich (28) of Hawthorne Woods was transported by ambulance to Centegra-Northern Illinois Medical Center, McHenry for non-life threatening injuries.
  • Jennifer Franklin (25) of Mount Prospect was flown from the scene by helicopter to Condell Hospital, in Libertyville, while Sievert and
  • Vanessa M. Toby (24) of Schaumburg were transported by ambulance to Centegra Memorial Hospital-Woodstock for evaluation and treatment of serious injuries. Vanessa Toby succumbed to her sustained injuries and later died.

Mark Maioni and passenger Kari Singer (33), also of Crystal Lake were examined by rescue personnel and released on the scene.

Alcohol is suspected to have been a factor in this crash.

Criminal Charges are pending as this incident remains under investigation by Accident Investigators of the Crystal Lake Police Department’s Targeted Response Unit, and the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office.
