Saturday Night YR Forum for State Rep. Candidates Kent Gaffney, Danielle Rowe and Dave McSweeney

February 11, 2012 By: Cal Skinner Category: Candidates' Night, Danielle Rowe, Dave McSweeney, Kent Gaffney, McHenry County Young Republicans, Young Repubicans, YRs

Cory Brackmann speaks at last Saturday's District 5 and 6 candidates night. Others participating were, from left to right, Ersel Schuster, Diane Evertsen, Shawn Green, Rachel Smith, Michael Rein, David LaGue, Mike Skala and Michael Stanard. At least six of ten District 6 candidates will be at the Chamber of Commerce Expo at Marengo High School Saturday and Sunday.

Last Saturday night at 7 the County Board candidates you see above gathered at McHenry County College to present their credentials and answer questions.

Danielle Rowe

Kent Gaffney

Dave McSweeney

Tonight, three aspirants to fill the full term of the late State Rep. Mark Beaubien will do the same.

Because of the hotness of the race, there will probably be a larger crowd than a week ago.

For the western half of McHenry County, most County Board candidates will be at the Marengo Chamber of Commerce Expo at Marengo High School on Saturday and Sunday.

The Weekend Wrap-Up – 14th District

September 27, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: Antioch Township Republican Club, Gun Rights Policy Conference, Joe Walsh, Kane County GOP Round-Up, Liberty Street Tea Party, Quentin Road Baptist Church, Quentin Road Bible Baptist Church, Randy Hultgren, State Line Rifle Association, Wauconda, Young Repubicans

My goal is to chronicle what happens in the 14th Congressional District race each weekend.

I have asked both Randy Hultgren’s people and those of Joe Walsh to provide me with a summary and photos so I may share them with you.

This past weekend Hultgren was at a Congressional hearing in Springfield on broadband internet in rural areas. No press release or photos yet, but I’m hopeful.

Walsh’s folks sent me the following:

This weekend, Congressman Walsh returned from Washington Friday afternoon and then spent some time getting acquainted with folks in Kane County at the Annual Kane County GOP Round-Up before heading North to the Antioch Township Republican Club’s Autumn Dinner.

Joe Walsh spoke to a gun policy event on Saturday.

Saturday began with NRA Day, hosted by the State Line Rifle Association, followed by Joe delivering remarks at the 26th Gun Rights Policy Conference in Chicago where he received the “2011 Bill of Rights Award” for his efforts to promote the 2nd Amendment. He also made remarks at the Wauconda America Legion at their annual installation of new officers

The Liberty Street Tea Party held a pig roast that Joe Walsh attended.

Later Saturday afternoon Joe joined 140 members of the Liberty Street Tea Party in Wauconda for a pig roast at a home on the banks of Bangs Lake.

Joe Walsh speaks to Quentin Road Bible Baptist Church in Lake County.

Earlier today (Sunday) he spoke at the Quentin Road Bible Baptist Church’s Sunday Service at the invitation of their pastor and enjoyed a homemade fried chicken lunch where he and Helene ate with Irene Napier.

This afternoon, Joe served as a sponsor for the Northwest Suburban Young Republicans BBQ and walked barrington’s Art in the Barn for a couple hours meeting folks.

Here’s what Hultgren’s people report he was doing (received after the article was up):

On Friday as soon as he returned home from Washington, Congressman Hultgren attended the Kane County GOP Fall Round Up and then up to Antioch for the Antioch Township Republican Dinner/Dance honoring State Rep. JoAnn Osmond.

On Saturday he headed down to Springfield for an Ag Committee to review the role of broadband access in rural economic development. Members of the Committee heard testimony from a panel of witnesses on how access to rural broadband provides opportunities in healthcare, education, and market access. They also examined some of the challenges, such as lack of infrastructure, to realizing the full potential of rural economic growth.

On Sunday he attended church with his family and then headed to Barrington for the 3rd Annual Suburban Young Republican BBQ.

The Politicians at Crystal Lake’s July 4th Parade

July 03, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: 4th of July, 4th of July Parade, Allen Skillicorn, American flag, Cathy Ferguson, Crystal Lake, Crystal Lake Lions Club, Don Manzullo, Donna Kurtz, Dorothy Heisler, Ellen Brady Mueller, Freda Manzullo, Helene Walsh, JA Frate, Jesse White, Jesse White Tumbler, Joe Walsh, John O'Neill, Keith Nygren, Kent Gaffney, Lou Bianchi, Mary Donner, McHenry County Young Republicans, Mike Shorten, Mike Tryon, Nick Kachiroubas, Nick Sauer, Parents Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, PFLAG, Ranchitos, Red Light Cameras, South Shore Drill Team, Young Repubicans

OK. You got me.

It’s July 3rd.

The Color Guard weren't up front in the 2011 Crystal Lake Independence Day Parade, but it will be in this article.

And it wasn’t sweltering hot.  I found the shade most of the hour and a half 90-something entry parade.

The biggest political entry was Congressman Joe Walsh’s.

He followed Congressman Don Manzullo and his wife Freda, who rode in a convertible.

Nineteen year Congressman Don Manzullo rode with his wife Freda in Crystal Lake's 4th of July Parade. Under the Democratic Party's map, Manzullo will represent none of McHenry County after the 2012 elections.

Between them was McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren.  If one did not recognize the Sheriff, one would not have known that he was in the parade.

Sheriff Keith Nygren drove a squad car in Crystal Lake's Independence Day Parade. His wife Marge was riding in the passenger seat and a youngster was waving from the read window.

Last year at parades there were Sheriff’s Department motorcyclists, a snow mobile, a community service vehicle, plus a convertible with identification signs on the sides in which the Sheriff rode.

Would someone familiar wth law enforcement patches tell us in the comments whether this is a photo of a Sheriff's Deputy?

There was an unmarked gray car that followed with a female officer. I’m not familiar enough with the patch she wore to know if she’s a Sheriff’s Deputy.

Fire engines thrilled the kids lining the parade route.

Can’t do a story without mentioning the Grand Marshall. After all she is the mother of McHenry County Board member Jim Heisler and Nunda Township Supervisor John Heisler.

Chemtool President Jim Athans drives Grand Marshall Dorothy Heisler in his splendid convertible.

Next came the Crystal Lake Lions huge flag. I only wish I had had a higher vantage point.

The Crystal Lake Lions gigantic Americal Flag.

JA Frate’s Fallen Heroes semi-trailer paid appropriate honor to those who have defended our freedom.

Crystal Lake's JA Frate's Fallen Heroes trailer was in Crystal Lake's Indendence Day Parade after the huge Lions Club flag.

Then the banner of Congressman Joe Walsh came down the hill.

This banner announced that Congressman Joe Walsh was on the way.

A man with a bull horn said patriotic things.

There were lots of sounds during the parade, but all were musical except the words of this Joe Walsh supporter.

Next came Congressman Walsh.  He was greeting people along the parade route, the only politician besides McHenry County State’s Attorney Lou Bianchi to do so.

Although he represents very few constituents with a Crystal Lake zip code, Congressman Joe Walsh enjoyed good face recognition...probably because of his numerous appearance on national television appearances where a "Tea Party" Republican was desired.

What you see below was not an isolated occurrence.  A number of people made the effort to reach out to Congressman Walsh.

Here is another man who reached out to Joe Walsh once he recognized him. Walsh was wearing nothing to identify himself.

Parents seemed please that Walsh did not ignore the future voters.

Joe Walsh was giving high fives to kids along the route, although i didn't manage to get a shot of that.

These girls were marching in time with the music from Joe Walsh's float.

These girls were marching to the beat blaring from the loud speaker on Joe Walsh's vehicle.

Marching music was playing from Joe Walsh’s parade vehicle and a line of girls were marching to its beat.

Walsh saw them and stepped over to clap in time with them.

The Congressman who has had his 8th District reapportioned out from under him did not ignore the ladies of voting age.

Joe Walsh was not just greeting men during Crystal Lake's 2011 Independence Day Parade.

Some women were as enthusiastic to see him as the men above.

Enthusiasm radiated from this woman's greeting of Joe Walsh.

A blue-shirted lady nearby was not to be outdone. She also grasped Walsh’s hands and told him something.

The energetic Congressman Joe Walsh continued being greeted enthusiastically as the parade continued.

Walsh was not the only member of the family greeting voters.

His wife Helene was pressing the flesh, too.

e

Joe Walsh's wife Helene made contact with this flag-bedecked woman.Did she want a picture with him? No, she wanted a word with one of 435 United States Representatives.

The truck from which the sound was coming contained that part of a mariachi band that needed a stable platform.

The Ranchitos mariachi band that Congressman Joe Walsh hired appealed not only to those with connections to Mexico lining Dole Avenue, but also to the very Anglo guy taking pictures.

Ever since I heard my first mariachi band in the 1960′s, I always wished I had enough money to hire them for parades.  He hired the Ranchitos.  I hope he does it for every parade.

You can see Ranchitos band members are wearing Joe Walsh tee shirts and the drummer is surrounded by American flags. Feel free to comment on what message that Walsh is trying to convey in the comment section below.

Nick Sauer, was marching with Congressman Joe Walsh in the first political event since Kent Gaffney was appointed to take State Rep. Mark Beaubien's seat in the Illinois General Assembly. Sauer was reportedly the choice of Lake County Chairman Bob Cook, who was outvoted by McHenry County GOP Chairman Mike Tryona and newly-appointed Barrington Township Committeeman Gene Dawson.

But that wasn’t all I noticed in the Joe Walsh contingent.

One of the rejected applicants to replace State Rep. Mark Beaubien, Nick Sauer, introduced himself. Since I didn’t have a picture of him, you can bet I pushed the button.

The Barrington School Board member was waving an American Flag at the end of the Walsh group.

Repubiican Precinct Committeeman Mike Shorten

I also spotted past Crystal Lake City Council candidate Mike Shorten.  He is now a  Nunda Township precinct committeeman.

The next political entry was a bicycle ridden by a man displaying signs for McHenry County Board member Donna Kurtz. (She tells me she and her mother, former State Rep. Rosemary Kurtz, were in the parade, but my eyes must have been elsewhere.)

A supporter of McHenry County Board member Donna Kurtz gave her some name identification.

The only County Board member I saw at the parade was Nunda Township’s District 3 member Mary Donner.

McHenry County Board member Mary Donner waves to the crowd on the other side of the street.

Looking very much as if he will be a candidate in the 2012 elections was McHenry County State’s attorney Lou Bianchi.

McHenry County State's Attorney Lou Bianchi worked the Crystal Lake Independence Day Parade.

The political entry was the PTLAG contingent.

The banner of the Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.

The acronym is short for “Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.”  The group is a member of the coalition that convinced the Illinois General Assembly to enact the civil union legislation that took effect June 1st.

The next political group was the Jesse White Tumblers.

The van for the Jesse White Tumblers bears the Secretary of State's name.

Before you get all bent out of shape, do remember that Secretary of State Jesse White did accompany his tumblers in one 4th of July Parade.

With the First United Methodist Church of Crystal Lake as his backdrop, a senior member of the Jesse White Tumblers soars through the air.

Coming near the end of the parade were the McHenry County Young Republicans.

The banner of the McHenry County Young Republicans was next. The man who challenged Democrat Jack Franks in 2010, John O'Neill, can be seen to the right of the banner.

McHenry County State Rep. and GOP Chairman Mike Tryon walked with the Young Republicans.

State Rep. Mike Tryon was in the parade.

West Dundee Village Trustee Allen Skillicorn.

While State Rep. Mike Tryon marched with the Young Republicans, I didn’t see State Sen. Pam Althoff.

If newly picked State Rep. Kent Gaffney was in the contingent, I did not recognize him.

His new district will contain more votes in McHenry County than anywhere else.  About a third of Crystal Lake is in it.

A surprise addition was West Dundee Village Trustee Allen Skillicorn.

As I look at the contents of the photos, I see a delightful tee shirt.

It says,

“Honk if you hate red light cameras.

Click to enlarge this photo and you will see a tee shirt that says, "Honk if you hate red light cameras."

That is relevant to McHenry County because Democrat Jack Franks was one of the sponsors of the bill to legalize this form of highway robbery.

And, although it has no political implications, the South Shore Drill Team brought up the rear of the parade.

Look at the smile on this flag waving team member.

The team was worth waiting for.

Almost forgot Crystal Lake’s politicians.

Mayor Aaron Shepley was not present, but City Clerk Nick Kachiroubas was.

City Clerk Nick Kachiroubas.

So were two of the three women on the City Council, Ellen Brady Mueller and Cathy Ferguson.

City Councilwoman Ellen Brady Mueller was one of the first parade entries. I asked her if she was going to run for County Board. She seemed to be thinking about it.

Council member Cathy Ferguson was waving to the crowd.

And, finally, Councilman Ralph Dawson was seated comfortably in the back of a pickup truck.

Council Ralph Dawson sits in the back. Although I see a sign with Jeff Thorsen's name on it, I didn't catch sight of him.

Young Republicans Produce Ad about Wisconsin Senators, “Fugitives on the Run”

February 25, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: Illinois, Senator, Wanted, Wisconsin, Young Repubicans, YRs

Pictures of the 14 missing Wisconsin State Senators scroll across the screen.

The Illinois Young Republicans are having some fun with Democratic State Senators, “fugitives on the run.”

The YR's use the photo I took of the Heritage inn in Harvard and quote the Northwest Herald.

They present the charges:

"Wanted for: AVOIDING TOUGH DECISIONS"

  • Avoiding tough decisions

"Wanted for: EVADING THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES"

  • Evading their responsibilities

Then they ask people to call Governor Pat Quinn. if they have any information regarding their location.

Hey, if you know where they are, call me at 815-459-3506. It’s not as if it is an unlisted number. Or shoot me an email on the left hand side of the page (Email Cal Skinner).

Here’s the video:

January 18, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: McHenry County Young Republicans, Young Repubicans, YRs

The McHenry County Young Republicans will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday, January 19th at the Cottage in Crystal Lake. It is located at the five-cornered intersection in Downtown Crystal Lake.

Officers Jack Justen, Chairman, Erica Poremba, Vice Chair, Rob Lee, Secretary and Brian Hain, Treasurer, remind folks of the following dates:

  • Saturday, February 19: Lincoln Day Dinner Dance hosted by the McHenry County Republican Party at D’Andrea Banquet Hall.
  • Tuesday, April 5: Consolidated Election

They report the YR’s will participation in the Crystal Lake 4th of July Parade.

On a personal note, this brings back memories of when the YR’s of my and Jack Schaffer’s day used to meet at the Cottage.

The Night the Lights Went Out While Jason Plummer Was Speaking

January 21, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: 1776, Bryan Javor, Cal Skinner Jr., Illinois Federation for Right to Life, Illinois State Rifle Association, Jason Plummer, Jim Thompson, Lieutenant Governor, McHenry County Board., McHenry County Young Republicans, Privatization Committee, Ray Marchiori, Roland Burris, State Comptroller, Young Repubicans, YRs

Last night at Crystal Lake’s 1776 restaurant will be a night that Jason Plummer, an aggressive Downstate candidate for lieutenant governor, will remember forever.

How do I know?

Lientenant governor candidate Jason Plummer begins speaking after being introduced by McHenry County Young Republican President Bryan Javor.

Because I’ve been on the same route he took twice, once in 1982 when I ran for State Comptroller against Roland Burris and twenty years later when I ran for governor in 2002 against Rod Blagojevich and Jim Ryan.

A statewide candidate doesn’t remember all the stops on the campaign trail, but some are memorable.

Like the night at some big meeting hall in Carbondale when all the candidates on the ticket were standing under a big photo of us all and Jim Thompson was commenting on the St. Louis Globe’s endorsement that day.

“Even Skinner got endorsed,”

he exclaimed.

Of course, I thought and still think I was more qualified than incumbent Burris to be State Comptroller, but even I was surprised I had received the endorsement.

Last night the McHenry County Young Republicans held a candidates’ night for county board candidates.

Thank goodness, the YR’s were not as hidebound as the DeKalb League of Women Voters in 1982, when I was not allowed to speak because I wasn’t a legislative candidate.

In any event, the tallest Republican candidate I have seen since Thompson walked to the podium and was told, as the other candidates had been told, that he had five minutes and that when he was at the four minute mark, he would be told.

He started by pointing out the Illinois lieutenant governor had “no constitutional duties.”

He cited the three statutes giving the office some things to do—probably all enacted while Neil Hartigan was serving under Governor Dan Walker—and said,

“Clearly it’s not an overwhelming workload.”

Plummer talked about his having created jobs in companies he had started, as well as his role in the family lumber business, RP Lumber, with 43 yards in Illinois and two in Missouri.

He told of how he was in intelligence in the Navy Reserve, had worked at the Heritage Foundation and for U.S. Senator Peter Fitzgerald.

And, how he had returned from Washington to run for Madison County Republican Party Chairman.

He talked about fighting corruption in Madison County, something that no knowledgeable person would deny exits.

“I battled corrupt legislators, a corrupt county board and a corrupt judiciary.”

Plummer said,

“The state needs someone who knows how to sign the bottom of a check, not just the back of a check.”

Great line, don’t you think?

While at a trade convention in Indiana, he told a woman he was running for lieutenant governor.

“In Indiana?” the woman asked.

“No, Illinois.”

The New Jersey resident reacted with dismay, wondering why anyone would want to run for office in our corrupt state.

“When the people of New Jersey are questioning the ethics of Illinois, (we’re in trouble).”

Then, a very bright light put up by YR President Bryan Javor went out.

Jason Plummer's expression after the bright light went out at 1776, plunging the room into relative darkness.

Then came the best quip of the night:

“Is that what you do at one minute?”

I’m still chuckling.

Tell me that Plummer won’t remember last night for the rest of his life.

In that last minute, Plummer listed some endorsements. I caught the Illinois State Rifle Association and the Illinois Federation of Right to Life.

Lientenant governor candidate Jason Plummer posing at 1776 in Crystal Lake with his campaign manager, Ray Marchiori.

Afterward I got a photo of Plummer with his campaign manager, Ray Marachiori. Marachiori staffed my Privatization Committee during the 1995-96 legislative session.

Plummer stayed until the end of the meeting. I guess he figured everybody in the room would vote in the GOP primary election.

I noticed 6th District county board candidate carrying one of Plummer’s signs out of the restaurant.
