Township Republican and MCC Candidates Address Young Republicans

Friday night,  candidates courted Young Republicans at the McHenry County Republican Party Headquarters, located in the “V” of the Crystal Lake Plaza.

Tom Poznanski and Marty Waitzman addressed the group. Poznanski is running for Grafton Township Road Commissioner, while Waitzman is running for Grafton Township Sueprvisor.

Larry Emery of Crystal Lake, a candidate for Algonquin Township Trustee was first up. He told of retiring recently from Sears after 33 years, starting new company HSMS Consulting, his having volunteered during the fall campaign, volunteering at the Bethesda Thrift Shop and, more lately, to help move State Rep. Mike Tryon’s office equipment and supplies to a new location.

Grafton Township Road Commissioner candidate Tom Poznanski explained that he had worked for the District for eight years and how he tried to convince his boss, Jack Freund to run for re-election.  When that attempt was unsuccessful, Poznanski decided to run himself.  So it was from pounding in stakes for signs in past elections to knocking on doors this year.

Marty Waitzman, who is running for Grafton Township Supervisor, spoke next.  He had the audience howling as he told of confronting motorcyclists when he worked as a policeman in Lake County.

Pointing out that the men he had stopped were bigger than he, Waitzman explained that he affected an effeminate voice.

He figured that he was in a win-win situation as a result.

If the motorcyclist beat him up, all they could claim was they had beaten up a gay cop.

If he bested them, they would have been lost to a gay cop.

The quandary he put them in resulted in a successful traffic stop.

Rob Parrish

Next was Rob Parrish, who is running for Nunda Township Highway Commissioner.

“Together with his family, we made the tough decision to retire the company due to the negative economic indicators regarding the poor housing market, liquid asphalt prices reaching an all time high, ever-increasing crude oil prices, and skyrocketing salt prices.

“After 30-plus years, Parrish Paving Inc. closed it’s doors as a successful, profitable, and well established family business in McHenry County.”

Parrish said he decided to take an offer to work for Geske and Sons Inc., a larger local paving company, once a former competitor. Prior to accepting to join Geske, Rob’s main concern was finding jobs for all the valued employees that had worked for Parrish Paving for over 10 years. Rob asked the Geske family to give his men a fair shot to join the team at  the company as well. After quality interviews, all Rob’s men were hired.

After joining Geske, Parrish streamlined the bidding process by implementing computerized job costing, increased crew organization and implementation on job sites which increased average daily production and ended Saturday overtime work hours.

Eric Sivertsen and Tom Wilbeck are both running for the McHenry County College Board.

Parrish said he decided to run for Nunda Township Highway Commissioner because he believes the the citizens of Nunda deserve a candidate with the proven leadership and extensive trade knowledge to run the Road District like an efficient paving business by providing Quality service at a fiscally responsible price.

YR member Eric Sivertsen was the next candidate to talk.  He said he was running for both the McHenry Grade School Board and the McHenry County College Board, both of which needed more conservatives on their panels.

Also running for MCC’s Board was Tom Wilbeck.  He talked about the need for a business approach to the proposed Health Club.

YR’s also discussed plans for the upcoming year, including a billboard, participation in parades, a candidates’ night and a Valentine Day’s gathering.

Young Republicans Produce Ad about Wisconsin Senators, “Fugitives on the Run”

February 25, 2011 By: Cal Skinner Category: Illinois, Senator, Wanted, Wisconsin, Young Repubicans, YRs

Pictures of the 14 missing Wisconsin State Senators scroll across the screen.

The Illinois Young Republicans are having some fun with Democratic State Senators, “fugitives on the run.”

The YR's use the photo I took of the Heritage inn in Harvard and quote the Northwest Herald.

They present the charges:

"Wanted for: AVOIDING TOUGH DECISIONS"

  • Avoiding tough decisions

"Wanted for: EVADING THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES"

  • Evading their responsibilities

Then they ask people to call Governor Pat Quinn. if they have any information regarding their location.

Hey, if you know where they are, call me at 815-459-3506. It’s not as if it is an unlisted number. Or shoot me an email on the left hand side of the page (Email Cal Skinner).

The Night the Lights Went Out While Jason Plummer Was Speaking

January 21, 2010 By: Cal Skinner Category: 1776, Bryan Javor, Cal Skinner Jr., Illinois Federation for Right to Life, Illinois State Rifle Association, Jason Plummer, Jim Thompson, Lieutenant Governor, McHenry County Board., McHenry County Young Republicans, Privatization Committee, Ray Marchiori, Roland Burris, State Comptroller, Young Repubicans, YRs

Last night at Crystal Lake’s 1776 restaurant will be a night that Jason Plummer, an aggressive Downstate candidate for lieutenant governor, will remember forever.

How do I know?

Lientenant governor candidate Jason Plummer begins speaking after being introduced by McHenry County Young Republican President Bryan Javor.

Because I’ve been on the same route he took twice, once in 1982 when I ran for State Comptroller against Roland Burris and twenty years later when I ran for governor in 2002 against Rod Blagojevich and Jim Ryan.

A statewide candidate doesn’t remember all the stops on the campaign trail, but some are memorable.

Like the night at some big meeting hall in Carbondale when all the candidates on the ticket were standing under a big photo of us all and Jim Thompson was commenting on the St. Louis Globe’s endorsement that day.

“Even Skinner got endorsed,”

he exclaimed.

Of course, I thought and still think I was more qualified than incumbent Burris to be State Comptroller, but even I was surprised I had received the endorsement.

Last night the McHenry County Young Republicans held a candidates’ night for county board candidates.

Thank goodness, the YR’s were not as hidebound as the DeKalb League of Women Voters in 1982, when I was not allowed to speak because I wasn’t a legislative candidate.

In any event, the tallest Republican candidate I have seen since Thompson walked to the podium and was told, as the other candidates had been told, that he had five minutes and that when he was at the four minute mark, he would be told.

He started by pointing out the Illinois lieutenant governor had “no constitutional duties.”

He cited the three statutes giving the office some things to do—probably all enacted while Neil Hartigan was serving under Governor Dan Walker—and said,

“Clearly it’s not an overwhelming workload.”

Plummer talked about his having created jobs in companies he had started, as well as his role in the family lumber business, RP Lumber, with 43 yards in Illinois and two in Missouri.

He told of how he was in intelligence in the Navy Reserve, had worked at the Heritage Foundation and for U.S. Senator Peter Fitzgerald.

And, how he had returned from Washington to run for Madison County Republican Party Chairman.

He talked about fighting corruption in Madison County, something that no knowledgeable person would deny exits.

“I battled corrupt legislators, a corrupt county board and a corrupt judiciary.”

Plummer said,

“The state needs someone who knows how to sign the bottom of a check, not just the back of a check.”

Great line, don’t you think?

While at a trade convention in Indiana, he told a woman he was running for lieutenant governor.

“In Indiana?” the woman asked.

“No, Illinois.”

The New Jersey resident reacted with dismay, wondering why anyone would want to run for office in our corrupt state.

“When the people of New Jersey are questioning the ethics of Illinois, (we’re in trouble).”

Then, a very bright light put up by YR President Bryan Javor went out.

Jason Plummer's expression after the bright light went out at 1776, plunging the room into relative darkness.

Then came the best quip of the night:

“Is that what you do at one minute?”

I’m still chuckling.

Tell me that Plummer won’t remember last night for the rest of his life.

In that last minute, Plummer listed some endorsements. I caught the Illinois State Rifle Association and the Illinois Federation of Right to Life.

Lientenant governor candidate Jason Plummer posing at 1776 in Crystal Lake with his campaign manager, Ray Marchiori.

Afterward I got a photo of Plummer with his campaign manager, Ray Marachiori. Marachiori staffed my Privatization Committee during the 1995-96 legislative session.

Plummer stayed until the end of the meeting. I guess he figured everybody in the room would vote in the GOP primary election.

I noticed 6th District county board candidate carrying one of Plummer’s signs out of the restaurant.
