Message of the Day – A Flag and a Monument

Since it’s Flag Day, it seems appropriate to show a United States flag.

This is one of the United States Flags flying about the Washington Monument.

And, certainly without General George Washington, that flag would not be flying.

We neophyte visitors to our nation’s Capital had not made a reservation to go up to the top of the Washington Monument.

After we figured out that we wouldn’t be able to get in everyone headed to the bathrooms.

The trip to the johns was as much fun as watching the screaming Prairie Grove School board member repeatedly shutting the shades as I took pictures before being threatened with arrest for laughing.

So, even though we couldn’t go into and up the Washington Monument, we walked up to its base to see the view.

I took a picture of a kid’s tee shirt that was just too good and, while I was doing so, my family disappeared.

Then someone came to find me.

My wife had asked one of the Park Rangers if her son could just look inside.

He asked her if he wanted to go up to the top and you can guess what the answer was.

The Ranger said that they were ahead of schedule and could fit us in.

Boy, was that an answer to prayer. Going to the top of the Washington Monument is all that my son talked about on our Metro trip to the Mall.

I vaguely remember climbing its stairs as a child and remember my father’s having told me that when he was 4-H All-Star he camped on its grounds.
