Could McHenry County Learn from Kane County Animal Control Advertising Technique?

The following Daily Herald comment last Saturday leads me to wonder if McHenry County could learn something from our county to the South:

Going, going gone:

There’s nothing quite like the Internet for spreading the word, it seems, even about stray animals. Since Kane County’s new animal shelter started listing pictures and descriptions of some of its feline and canine denizens on petfinder.com a month ago, adoptions have increased dramatically. The response has “almost wiped us out in dogs,” said facility director Pat Sikorski. About 2,000 hits per week seek information about animals at the Geneva facility. If you’re seeking a furry companion, simply type “Geneva, IL” into the location box on the left rail of the Web site’s main page.

During the discussion of the dollars to be budgeted to the new McHenry County Animal Shelter in Crystal Lake, I learned that Kane County’s shelter is proportionally much smaller than the planned Crystal Lake one. Although Kane County is much more populated that McHenry, the McHenry County Board decided to spend as much on its shelter as Kane County is spending to build a completely new facility.

Maybe adopting this advertising technique might help make up for the shortcomings in re-modeling that the Board of Health perceives with the new building on Route 14 and Woodstock Street in Crystal Lake.
