More Junior College Secrecy

The junior college my father and I helped start and locate in Crystal Lake is acting like a junior G-man again.

I wonder if they have issued badges to those playing “hide the documents” yet.

Got to keep them away from those subversive taxpayers, right?

So what was I denied recently?

I asked for “a copy of the memo prepared pursuant to Donna Kurtz’ request regarding the comparison of finalists in applicants to handle the debt certificate sale.”

Kurtz’ request seemed eminently reasonable to me, especially in view of McHenry County College Board President Scott Summers’having made a point of mentioning that he had a long time friend at Hutchinson, Shockey, Erley & Co., the firm recommended by staff, but had not involved himself at all in the selection process.

And, yes. I know that community college folks hate the term “junior college.” It was OK to use in 1968 when we worked to establish the college, but now it is considered demeaning.

“Junior” fits their behavior, though.

They are acting like Junior G-Men in withholding another document related to the baseball stadium financing.

First, the feasibility study by Mark Houser’s Equity One, a study which checked the stadium revenue projections of his buddy, baseball promoter Pete Heitman and, now, the analysis that led the college to select a company which will make some pretty good money on issuing non-referendum debt.

What’s the excuse?

The memo is one of these:

“(f) Preliminary drafts, notes, recommendations, memoranda and other records in which opinions are expressed, or policies or actions are formulated, except that a specific record or relevant portion of a record shall not be exempt when the record is publicly cited and identified by the head of the public body.”

Very interesting.
