Part 2– Tom Lingenfelter Tells Why Mark Smith, His Sister’s Murderer, Should Remain in Jail

Yesterday the first part of murder victim Jean Ann Lingenfelter’s borther’s plea that serial killer Mark Smith, a notorious product of McHenry County, should serve more than 10% of his 500-year sentence.

Here is the second part of Tom Lingenfelter’s letter to the Illinois Prisoner Review Board:

“Later than morning Jimmy had to go down to identify the body, mom and dad were in no condition to do it.

“I can’t imagine what that must have been like for him. I don’t think Jimmy ever got over having to do that.

“I am sure after being beaten, strangled and left in the water for (a) long period of time that her condition was worse than any nightmare anyone could ever imagine.

“Later that day, we got a call from the police telling us that they have arrested a suspect. They tell us they have Mark Smith in custody.

“Mark Smith, the very same guy that not just a few weeks earlier was standing in our living room having his picture taken the night of my sister High School Prom.

“His date was my sister’s friend, her date was his friend.

“Imagine learning later than your sister’s killer was actually in your house.

“Days later, things started to become clearer.

“The shock of her death has finally hit me. The day of her funeral will be a day I will never forget.

“The first thing that hit me was watching my mother break down because Jean Ann’s body was in such bad shape that we had to have a closed casket.

“The next thing that really got me was for the first time in my life, seeing my father cry. That is a very hard thing for a 15 year old to see.

“The day of her funeral was a gloomy day. I remember very clearly the amount of cars that were escorted to the cemetery. There were at least 50 cars driving together to the cemetery which was about 45 miles away.

“The time at the cemetery was the worse for me. Walking away from the grave site is when the whole thing finally hit me.

“I thought to myself,

‘Jean Ann is never coming back and my mom and dad just had to bury their only daughter.’

At 15 years old this is a very hard pill to swallow I thought to myself as we walked away from her grave, ‘well at least the worse is over.’

“I was wrong, with Jean Ann’s body in the ground we still had one more thing to face, Jean Ann’s and Nena’s High School graduation.”

Tomorrow, Part 3.
