McHenry County College Presidential Search Process Takes Nod Toward Public

Read this press release from McHenry County College and consider telling those listening what you think.

I think my request would be an administration that would be more transparent.

The problem is getting the college board to record their meetings is up to the board members themselves, not the hired help.

I’d also like a contract that prohibits $200,000+ golden parachutes if the new president is found unsatisfactory for whatever reason.

Finally, I’d like someone who has spent some time in a business that needed to cut expenses.

MCC INVITES COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO PROVIDE INPUT ON PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH

McHenry County College Presidential Search Process Takes Nod Toward Public — 5 Comments

  1. If you are talking about closed session meetings, the open meetings act requires recording or verbatim transcripts. See Page 30 of GUIDE TO THE
    ILLINOIS OPEN MEETINGS ACT
5 ILCS 120 or ” All public bodies shall keep written minutes of all their meetings, whether open or closed, and a verbatim record of all their closed meetings in the form of an audio or video recording.” 5 ILCS 120/2.06(a)

  2. I’m talking about the public meetings. No record exists except really brief minutes. Those who make public comments are identified, for instance, but what they said is not mentioned.

  3. Anyone can audio- or video-tape a meeting of a public body. Just show up with your recording equipment. As a courtesy, you might inform the Board that you will be recording, but even that is not necessary.

  4. I want to be able to hear what has happened when I can’t make the meetings.

  5. I stumbled upon this. By “someone from business to cut expenses,” do you mean someone from Lehman Brothers? Or Merrill Lynch? How about AIG? Or Enron, Tyco, or World Com? Maybe colleges can learn something about finances from GM. Or Bear Sterns. Or Washington Mutual. Or Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. Or Goldman Sachs. Maybe Morgan Stanley? Or Wachovia? Or HBOS?

One could go on much longer. There are many efficient, private businesses out there that are great with finances, but as recent facts show, they have no monopoly on being good financiers. People from business can help, but clearly they are no better than anyone else in terms of being efficient. Rather than “people from the business world” helping colleges (a one-way street), college administrators and business executives have a lot to learn from each other.
