Thanks a Lot, Phil Pagano

Train track in Woodstock

Now we apparently have the second copy cat suicide in McHenry County since Metra Executive Director Phil Pagano (“I love Metra”) killed himself by stepping in front of the last train from McHenry at East Hillside Road.

A woman in Woodstock got hit by the 2 PM inbound train.

Another legacy of the man.

Thanks a Lot, Phil Pagano — 13 Comments

  1. Every time a person commits suicide via a train are you going to bring up Phil Pagano? Cal, you are an arse!

  2. I’m sorry Cal but it is tasteless to make this comment over and over again. Please remember the families affected by these tragidies and respect their feelings. Just because they committed suicide by train does not mean there is any relationship to Phil Pagano. Multiple people in the US and other countries commit suicide in this manner every year and they have no idea whatsoever who Phil Pagano is.

  3. It’s time to pass a law banning trains. Look at the carnage they have cause in this area alone in the last couple of weeks. This should have been done a long time ago with cars also. So many people killed with them and then there is the DUI problem that continues to this day. We need to come to our senses and pass laws to put a stop to this mess. It’s the American way.

  4. Cal, show a little respect for the families that have all been touched by these tragedies.

  5. “Not a Grafton resident” apparently wants to ignore that two suicide-by-train deaths have now occurred in McHenry County since Phil Pagano died. Suicide-prevention organizations caution about “suicide contagion”. Pagano’s death was discussed almost endlessly in the established media.

Become familiar with the signs that a person might be considering suicide: isolation, depression, alcohol, drugs, cleaning up affairs, giving significant personal items away, talking about how life “isn’t worth it.”

Get help immediately for them (or for yourself). Don’t think they are okay, just because they appear to calm down a little.

  6. For the record Gus, I am not ignoring the deaths nor am I suggesting that they are okay. I am merely requesting that Cal respect the families of the victims.

We have no way of completely knowing or understanding the full reasons of why these people decided to end their lives or why they chose the method they did so it is unfair to speculate that it is a “copycat”. In a world where there is endless media, it is often difficult to keep it in our minds that the people that are in these articles are real people with real families who have real feelings.

  7. I have identified any of the three people who have walked into Metra trains since Pagano provided his example.

  8. No, you haven’t identified any of them, but you have blamed Pagano for their deaths. I’m sure his family really appreciates that.

  9. I do feel for the Pagano family. However, he was either a coward or coerced into walking in front of that train
A scenario that Pagano would have been familiar with as head of Metra and one that he knows is incredibly painful for the engineer involved.
You also have to believe the recent spates of similar ‘suicides” are related to the horrific Pagano incident.

  10. So completely insensitive. If one of your personal friends chose to end their life by stepping in front of a train, Cal – would that also be Phil Pagano’s fault for doing it first? Do you think his family appreciates this horrific assumption? Really low.

  11. “A woman in Woodstock got hit be the 2 PM inbound train.”

    I think you meant ‘by’
