Message of the Day – There’s No Place Like Home

Here’s a tee shirt slogan which really mystified me:

"There's no place like 127.0.0.1

I asked its wearer what it meant and was told the number identified one’s home computer.

Maybe someone can it explain it better than that.

Swim meet at Buffalo Grove High School.

From the shot before, which you see above, I figure it was being worn by a Swim Mom or Dad.

  1. When you type in a web address (like mchenrycountyblog.com) that gets converted to an IP address of the form 63.252.82.66 (that’s CapFAX, BTW)

127.0.0.1 is ALWAYS your own computer, so its “home”.

  2. Every computer is assigned a ‘home address’, i.e. an IP address [internet protocol] that is used to route traffic or packets of data to it.

“There’s no place like 127.0.0.1 [home].

  3. It’s the computer’s IP address. The individual code that identifies a specific computer.

IP addresses are very useful for identification, especially when you receive threatening e-mails from fanatical, anonymous, opposition supporters.

Not that I would know anything about that.

Some people are clever and can disguise or hide their IP address. That makes identification difficult.

I bet Bachmann has some insight into IP addresses. It’s amazing the thing that guy knows.

  4. 127.0.0.1 is the standard IP address used for a loopback network connection.

This means that if you try to connect to 127.0.0.1, you are immediately looped back to your own machine.

So… it means “there’s no place like home”

  5. 127.0.0.1 is the local loop-back address of your computer’s network card. It is often “pinged” by techs to test that your Network card is functional. Since it always loops back to your own computer, hence the “Home” idea.
