The following press release has been received from Green Party Sheriff’s candidate Gus Philpott:
PHILPOTT WANTS POLICE REVIEW BOARD
Gus Philpott, Green Party candidate for Sheriff of McHenry County, favors creation of a Civilian Police Review Board and/or an Internal Affairs Division for the McHenry County Sheriff’s Department.
Philpott is concerned about transparency and fairness issues when dealing with discipline of Department employees.
He wants such a Board to apply to both merited deputies and corrections officers.
He is aware of crimes that have been committed, but which were handled quietly as administrative issues within the sheriff’s department, rather than more publicly through the Merit Commission or prosecution.
Currently, only suspensions of “more than 30 days” go before the Sheriff’s Department Merit Commission, a five-member board hand-picked by the sheriff.
Philpott would cause disciplinary issues of five-ten days in length (or greater) to go before the Board.
Woodstock Police Department disciplinary issues of five days or more go to the City’s Board of Fire and Police Commissioners.
The election for McHenry County Sheriff will be November 2, 2010.
I asked Philpott for examples and here’s what he provided:
- Driving under the Influence
- Battery of one deputy by another deputy under the influence of alcohol
- False reporting of a traffic crash
- Incomplete investigation of an on-duty injury incident
- Failure to turn over evidence in a crime under investigation
When contacted for comment, Democratic Party candidate Mike Mahon said,
“Back in May in a press release about the Eric Woods’ shooting range incident, I said that I would form a newly-created McHenry County Sheriff’s Internal Affairs Division. That’s what’s lacking at this time.”
Is Gus going to change STATE LAW regarding Merit Commission Rules? I guess he thinks Sheriff’s have the power to do that without legislative changes….With Gus its more bold talk and nothing but fluff. He doesn’t let me post to his blog because he can’t countermand the truth. My posts never get approved…..fancy that
At least MIke Mahon doesn’t pretend to think he can change existing Merit Statutes….
We need a sheriff that will not appoint his contributors that are “toadies”.

My last post regarding your idiotic rant about racial profiling resulted in my attempts to simply say “EL TORO POO POO”
You select which postings get listed to your blog site and have often refused to post many logical rebuttals taking an opposing view.
I don’t always side with Nygren or the MCSO, but see your site as primarily a anti MCSO site. Many of my friends have commented that you only post views which primarily side with your own.
Let the chips fall where thy may, but any blog should be fair and balanced.
