Is Indictment in the Future of Pat Quinn?

I’m not really serious about that headline, but if McHenry County Special Prosecutor Henry Tonigan were investigating whether Democratic Party Governor Pat Quinn was using state resources to advance his political career, as he charges in his indictment of McHenry County State’s Attorney that Bianchi did, Quinn has stepped far over the line that Tonigan drew for Lou Bianchi.

Remember the count that said Bianchi had used to county resources to review his record and prepare for the Northwest Herald interview?

I’m referring to Count 19, a Class 3 Felony.

Here's the charge that McHenry County State's Attorney Lou Bianchi prepared for his Northwest Herald interview at the office with some of his top assistants.

Compare that to this action by Quinn, as reported on Capitol Fax Blog:

Pat Quinn, taken from a YouTube speech Governor Pat Quinn wishing everyone a Happy Eid ul-Fitr.

“The news about (Illinois Director of Management and Budget David ) Vaught attending the AFSCME endorsement session reminded me of the scene from the Godfather when Frankie Pentangeli is getting ready to testify, and his brother shows up and sits in the back of the room, causing him to change his story. Vaught didn’t need to say anything in the meeting – the message was pretty clear.

“I hate to say it, but Quinn really screwed up on this one. How is this any different from having the administration point person on a vendor contract be present at a political meeting when the vendor is asked to make a campaign contribution, and then the contract is approved a few days after the contribution is made? That would have the US Attorney all over it.”

“Sometimes, a governor has to make tough decisions,” Quinn said, according to Greg Hinz of Crain’s Chicago Business, who broke the original story.

Was he talking about taking the heat for trading this contract for AFSCME union support?

  1. Of course, there’s another way to look a this. The guy who wrote three e-mails on the government computer lost his job. The guy who is accused of doing years worth of political campaigning on gov. computers is still in office. The difference is apparently that some Democrats break the law, and some Republican’s are above the law.
