Scott Summers Takes Food Stmp Challenge

A press release from Harvard’s Scott Summers:

State treasurer candidate takes “food stamp” challenge

Eating on $4.50 per day

McHenry County, IL  Sep 23, 2010 — September is Hunger Action Month in Illinois. And a candidate for statewide office is among those taking up the challenge of a nonprofit group.

Scott Summers

According to www.FeedingIllinois.com, “more than 1.6 million people in our state live on $4.50 a day” — the amount set by the SNAP Program (formerly known as food stamps).

“So many people. So little money. Those are incredibly sobering statistics,”

says Scott Summers, the Green Party’s candidate for state treasurer. “Families and children should not have to struggle in order to obtain adequate nutrition.”

From September 19th through the 25th, Summers is taking Feeding Illinois’ SNAP Challenge. As a gesture of empathy, he joins others in attempting to eat on a “food stamp” allotment.

On his blog, www.SummersTimes.com, Scott reports on his progress with what he describes as an “austere” diet. He promises a final blog report once the period is up.

“We’re a wealthy state in a well-to-do nation,” Summers asserts.

“$4.50 per day is — literally — a starvation budget. Neighbors and friends should not be going hungry.”

Summers urges others to take the SNAP Challenge — for the next few days, or for one day, or for one meal. More information is at www.FeedingIllinois.com.
