CL Police Arrest Pepper Spraying Man

A press release from the Crystal Lake Police Department:

On Sunday, November 7th, 2010 at approximately 11:23 p.m., Crystal Lake Police were dispatched to a delayed report of an Attempt Armed Robbery which occurred at approximately 10:26 p.m. the same day at the Chase Bank ATM, located at 550 Crystal Point Drive, Crystal Lake.

The victim, a 28 year old resident of Crystal Lake, reported that while attempting to make a withdrawal from the Chase Bank ATM, he was approached by an unknown male/white subject who requested him to shut off his vehicle.

When the victim refused the suspect sprayed the victim in the face with a chemical agent believed to be pepper spray or similar aerosol spray.

The victim struggled to cancel his ATM transaction and was able to drive away without further incident.

The suspect who sprayed the victim was described as a white male, approximately 5’9” – 6’0”, 180 lbs., long shaggy reddish blond hair, beard and mustache wearing a green zip-up hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.

The 2nd suspect never exited his vehicle. The vehicle was described as possibly a blue older model Oldsmobile.

Both suspects subsequently fled the scene.

At 11:22 p.m. the same day, Crystal Lake Police were then dispatched to Domino’s Pizza located at 6168 Northwest Highway, for a reported battery complaint.

The victim, a Domino’s employee, later reported that he was approached by two suspects in the parking lot at the close of business who asked him if he had any “jumper cables.”

When the victim replied no, he was sprayed in the face with an unknown chemical agent that burned his skin.

The victim stated that both men then fled the scene on foot.

The victim pursued the individual who sprayed him keeping him in sight until Crystal Lake Police arrived and took the individual into custody who was later identified as Phillip King.

Phillip J. King (M/W, DOB 08/20/1982 of 1405 Skyridge Drive, Apartment A, Crystal Lake), who refused to speak with authorities was subsequently charged with

  • 1 Count of Aggravated Battery (Class 3 Felony),
  • 1 Count of Unlawful Use of a Weapons (Class A Misdemeanor) &
  • 1 Count of Mob Action (Class C Misdemeanor).

The King subject was processed through the city jail and transported to the McHenry County Adult Correctional Facility. Court date and bond to be set by the Judge.

Both incidents remain under investigation and are believed to be related.
