Message of the Day – Irony

In Sunday’s Chicago Sun-Times, columnist David Roeder, “The Curious Investor,” has a couple of paragraphs in his column headed, “Taxing Talk,” which I think worth re-printing:

TAXING TALK: Most companies let the chamber of commerce do the talking when a massive tax hike comes. CME Group (CME), owner of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and the Chicago Board of Trade, issued its own press release after the Illinois General Assembly approved higher income taxes Wednesday. “These significant tax increases, which are not tied to any corresponding spending cuts, will negatively impact jobs and business opportunities for Illinois residents and stifle economic growth in our state,” CME said.

“That would be the same company whose political action committee donated $100,000 to Friends of Michael J. Madigan last Oct. 14, $50,000 to Quinn/Simon for Illinois last June 23, $15,000 to Taxpayers for Quinn last Jan. 25, $25,000 to Taxpayers for Quinn on Dec. 18, 2009, and $50,000 to Friends of Michael J. Madigan on Dec. 9, 2009. In supporting House Speaker Madigan, the CME sharpies backed the politician most complicit in the state budget mess as he has been in power the longest, and it supported candidate Quinn who campaigned on raising taxes. What exactly did CME think it was getting?”

Feeding the mouth that bites you.

Irony?

Or masochism?
