Barrington Hills Allies of Village President Bob Abboud Win

The Barrington Hills food fight between the forces of Village President Bob Abboud and his opponents resulted in a victory for the Village President’s allies.

The village, which was formed in order to get rid of its  reputation as a speed trap, is comprised of mainly five-acre minimum lots with many horses in four counties.

The village laps over into four counties

  • Cook
  • Kane
  • Lake
  • McHenry

The first vote totals you saw above are from Cook County.

Below are the results from Kane County:

Lake County’s vote totals are below:
As you can see most votes were cast in Cook County.

The second largest concentration in McHenry County.

Third largest is in Lake County.

Kane County wins the prize for having the fewest residents.

There is a continuing problem of unequal taxation, despite my best efforts in the early 1970’s to implement an overlapping equalization clause in the 1970 State Constitution.

The bill helped, but it did not solve the problem.  (It could be solved, I believe, by equalizing each class of property in the four counties, rather than equalizing the average, but that would raise taxes on Cook County homeowners, and they seem to dominate the voting of the village.  And it would take legislative approval.)

McHenry County results are below:
If my addition is correct, here’s how these preliminary figures–all for four-year terms–add up:

  • Patty Meroni – 937
  • Joe Messer – 819
  • Karen Selman – 726
  • Beth Mallen – 594
  • Steven D’Amore – 582
  • Dede Wamberg – 529
  • David Stieper – 353

Stieper was unaligned, while the other six candidates were split into pro and con factions regarding Abboud’s leadership.

There was no contest for the two-year term, which Harold Gianopulos won.
