Prentice Hospital Might Be Re-Cycled

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Prentice Women's Hospital may be saved from the wrecking ball.

The corn cob shaped Prentice Women’s Hospital is where my daughter Alexandra was born.

It’s part of the Northwestern Memorial Medical Hospital complex.

As my daughter Alexandra’s mid-February, 1992, birth approached, I was running for State Comptroller.

As Lincoln’s Birthday approached I told the Oak Park Republicans that I hoped she was born then.

When that date passed, my pitch to the Lyons Township GOP was that maybe she would come on Valentine’s Day.

But she wanted her own day.

February 16th

She didn’t flip head down, so a Caesarean was decided upon.

In those days, one had to go to a special training class to be in the room for such a delivery.

So, there I was sitting a little waiting room…waiting.

Naturally, I had a book to pass the time.

I felt a lot like Dagwood in the cartoon series.

Then I saw a nurse wheeling a baby past the door.

“Is that my daughter?” I asked.

It was.

Because Robin had some extensive recovery time, I, my mother- and father-in-law got the privilege of holding Alexandra for the first few hours of her life.

So, not only because Prentice Hospital is an attractive building, but for personal reasons, I’m pleased that that it may not fall to the wrecking ball to be replaced with an ordinary looking structure

She checked the name tag and I found it was.
