  1. Gerrymandering today is used for politicians to pick their voters not the other way around. Then, they get to Washington and sell themselves to raise money for their campaigns. They need to do this because their districts are so large, they need to raise money every day in office in order to have enough to run again.

Smaller districts mean less money is necessary to run a campaign or defeat an incumbent. Small districts mean that voters know their representative better.

Smaller districts require much less in constituent service; smaller staffs will be necessary. Representatives can truly be part time under this kind of system. They don’t need to get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars. New Hampshire pays its Reps $100 a year and never has a problem getting people to run. They don’t stay forever either. Term limits will not be necessary either; part time representatives who don’t get paid much won’t overstay their welcome.

So what if Congress has 10,000 members; it will be far less easy for a special interest group to buy members to pass their preferred legislation. Lobbyists will still be necessary but they will do what they should do – lobby with information, not hand out money for campaigns. The Internet will make information dissemination much easier. Congressmen could even vote or attend hearings remotely. They spend most of their time in Washington raising money or visiting their mistresses anyway. Work will get done – we elect these people to vote on legislation – plain and simple. We didn’t elect them to sell their votes to the highest bidder.

Rich people won’t have an advantage with small districts – ordinary people can run and win. We can truly bring government back to the people. You are correct – this has to be a grassroots effort; politicians and their enablers won’t give up power easily.

It is about time we did something about government for sale.
