Big Doings in Rockford as New Federal Courthouse Dedicated

The Rockford office of the U.S. Attorney’s Office moved into their new digs last week.

And today, there’s the official dedication of the new building for which Congressman Don Manzullo and Senator Dick Durbin managed to get inserted into budgets over a period of years.

Here’s what the old courthouse looks like:

When Robin Geist Skinner and I had our only income tax audit, this is where we had to come--the old (then-new) Federal Courthouse. We had seen Mel Brooks' "The History of the World - Part 1" the night before. As the IRS Agent sat behind his metal desk, all I could think of was the Busby Berkeley knock-off scene with chained prisoners dancing and singing, "It's the Inquisition." We got a $120 refund even after the Agent ruled that my ticket to the Legislative Correspondents' Association Gridiron Dinner was not a deductible business expense., showing how little he knew about where business gets done in Springfield.

Below are a couple of views of the new structure:

It will be a little longer walk from the parking lot to the new courthouse, but not much longer.

Here's the main entrance of the new Federal Courthouse.

If one drives past the front of the new Federal Courthouse in Rockford, there is no doubt what's inside.

  1. Exterior of new one doesn’t look that inviting, rather cold, maybe that’s the intentional message, don’t mess with us or you’ll go to a cold cell.
