John Hammerand Wanted to Cut County Budget

John Hammerand smiles at his Wonder Lake Old Mill Inn fund raiser in 2008. Another is scheduled there for February 27, 2012.

In the McHenry County Board dispute (roll calls included in the article) Tuesday night over whether to hike county taxes or not, Wonder Lake County Board member John Hammerand was one of the hard-liners.

He not only wanted to keep the tax levy constant and not taken the automatically available extra 1.5% allowed by the Illinois Tax Cap law, but he didn’t want to take the money to be cut from the budget from the over half-year surplus that has built up since the county’s financial meltdown in the late 1990’s.

A member of the Finance Committee, he wanted to cut the budget.

When I talked to him about the meeting, he said this:

“In traveling the County to circulate my petition, I’ve seen stores closed, businesses abandoned and people’s homes repossessed.

“I think now is the time to truly cut the budget and not just continue the spending.

“We can certainly cut $3 million without curtailing any essential services to the people of McHenry County.”

  1. Wow someone who listens to the taxpayers of the county and doesn’t just have his agenda in mind.

  2. Wait a minute, why would he vote to give himself a RAISE in 2012 and then vote not to raise real estate taxes???????

He’s one that wanted to be paid for missed board meetings…

I heard him last month at a meeting.

    That doesn’t make sense.
