Prairie Grove, IL, November 17th, 2011- This past Monday, November 14th, at the regular meeting of the Nunda Township Republican Central Committee, Chairman Brent Smith shocked all in attendance by announcing that he had decided that he would not seek re-election as Chairman of the Nunda Township Republicans following the primary election next March.

Chairman Smith recommended that the Precinct Committeemen choose Mark Daniel as the next Chairman and Mike Shorten as the next Vice Chairman for the upcoming term.

Mark Daniel currently is the Treasurer for the organization and Mike Shorten serves as Secretary.  Both are in their first term as Precinct Committeemen but have been vital to the success of the organization over the past year and a half, according to Smith.

Following the announcement, Mark Daniel spoke of Brent Smith’s accomplishments, including filling all of the open 29 Committeemen positions, appointing 25 Precinct Captains, organizing several successful fundraisers quadrupling the Committee’s bank account and developing a mailing supporting Republican candidates prior to the 2010 general election that reached more than 10,000 voters.  In addition to chairing the Nunda Republicans, Brent Smith also founded the McHenry County Young Republicans.

During his term, Chairman Smith has provided Committeemen, Captains and voters the opportunity to hear from many elected officials and candidates at the monthly Nunda Republican meetings.  As a result of Smiths efforts recent meetings have had attendance levels of 60-90 people including attendees from other Townships and Counties.  Annual events including the annual Nunda Family Picnics drew even larger crowds.

At the Nunda GOP meeting on August 31st, 2011 Chairman Smith arranged for Illinois GOP Chairman Pat Brady to speak to a packed house, representing the first time in over 30 years that a State GOP Chairman has visited the county.

Meetings and picnics were also well attended by Congressman Joe Walsh, Congressman Randy Hultgren, State Senator Dan Duffy, State Senator Pam Althoff, State Rep. Mike Tryon, State Rep. Kent Gaffney and the late Mark Beaubien.

Numerous county officials have spoken over the past two years as well, including Sheriff Keith Nygren, Undersheriff Andy Zinke, County State’s Attorney Lou Bianchi, County Clerk Kathie Schultz, County Treasurer Bill LaFew, County Auditor Pam Palmer and County Board Members Nick Provenzano, Barbara Wheeler & Mary Donner.  Justice Ann Jorgensen, Justice Mary Schostok, Justice Gordon Graham and WLS radio host Dan Proft have all made speaking appearances as well as .

Smith said that while he is looking forward to being re-elected as a Precinct Committeeman and will remain involved in the Republican Party, he is looking forward to pursuing other opportunities.
