Yesterday, McHenry County analyzed the level of involvement in the Republican Party as measured by the number of precincts in which people filed petitions to run for Precinct Committeeman in each township.

The percentages ranged from 100% in a couple of lightly-populated precincts to 25% in Marengo. Only 34% of the precincts in the second largest township, Grafton, had candidates.

Below are those who have filed for precinct committeeman as Republicans.

You will note there are a couple of contests.

In Grafton Township McHenry County Board candidate and Huntley School Board member Mike Skala is in a contest with Huntley Village Trustee Nicholas Hanson.  In addition Grafton Township Clerk Harriet Ford, a resident of Lakewood, is being challenged by Betty Jane Miller, who has a Woodstock address.

In Nunda Township Precinct 14, Janness Abraham is challenging incumbent Patrick Collins.

In Riley Township, the single-precinct township in the southwest corner of McHenry County, Chester L. Mazurkiewicz is opposing  Kathleen J. Meyer, who holds the position now.

Seneca Township also has a contest.  McHenry County Board member Mary McCann is contesting with Gina LeFevour for the party post.

People can still get involved in this bottom level of the GOP. If you live in an empty precinct, that is, one where no one is running, you can contact the McHenry County Clerk’s Office and ask for a copy of a Declaration of Write-In Candidacy form. Fill it out, turn it in and there will be a box and aline on the ballot under the title of Republican Precinct Committeeman. If you can get ten write-in votes on March 20, 2012, you will be as much a Republican Precinct Committeeman as anyone on the ballot.

The odds of beating anyone on the ballot are so slim that I would not recommend anyone’s attempting to do so.
