Misdirected Campaign Literature

Friday, I received a campaign mailer from incumbent Crystal Lake City Councilmen Ralph Dawson and Jeff Thorsen.

The back of the mailer gives reasons to vote for Ralph Dawson and Jeff Thorsen.

The only problem is that I live in Lakewood, not Crystal Lake.

It was part of a mass mailing to “Registered Voter” to “Current Resident.”

I qualify on both counts.

The first rule of direct mail is to make sure the people you are sending it to live in the jurisdiction where you can get votes.

While Lakewood has the same zip code as Crystal Lake and I always put Crystal Lake in for my address, I can't vote in the Crystal Lake election since I am a resident of Lakewood.

As I was delivering literature advising people to vote against the tax hike referendum, I saw Northwest Heralds with Lee Jennings stickers on them.

There’s a problem with that, too.

Jennings is running for Township Supervisor in Nunda, not Algonquin Township.

When I went out to deliver more literature in my role as Algonquin Township Republican Precinct Committeeman, I saw still more Northwest Heralds with stickers promoting the Republican candidacy of Nunda Township Supervisor Lee Jennings. This time I took camera. You see what I saw below:

Nunda Township candidate Lee Jennings was campaigning in Algonquin Township via a Northwest Herald sticker Saturday morning.

  1. Dawson and Hubbard are spending a LOT of money.

Apparently both of them that long term ties to the community entitle them to seats on the council instead of earning it.

  2. I am responsible for misdirected mailings.

I am sorry for the inconvenience…

That area near you is kind of hard to define and I did my best to parse the addresses.

I fear that some corners of CL may not have been covered either.

Paul, I am running with Ralph Dawson and I can assure you that Ralph’s totals won’t be near $3,000.

I do appreciate your passion for our city and hope I have the chance to support you when you take that step!

  3. Cal, Thanks also for letting me use your photo for this piece!

  4. Jeff:

Think the world of you and you have my vote.

However the signage, which isn’t cheap, is stunning and even “Around the Clock” prostituted themselves by promoting Dawson.

    Signs aren’t cheap, even recycled.

  5. did not know about the around the clock thing….

Paul this council election is so ratcheted up to what I think are unprecidented levels…

    10 years ago I had 12 4×4 signs…that was huge….

4 years ago I placed the remaining 8 original 4×4’s and that was plenty….

this year I have THIRTY TWO out there….

but I do not nearly have the most signs.

We have to compete on the sign issue…

I know it is unpopular to some…

that is why we all want to get rid of them asap after the election…

It is difficult because we have to work and have commitments but we will get them down ASAP.

    Ralph is a great man.

He never gets along to go along…

    he always votes his heart.

please cut him a little slack.

I have worked with him for some time and he has my highest respect.

  6. I think I meant go along to get along…the course of most McHenry county political survivors…

  7. Jeff:

I get it and am not demeaning Dawson in any way. Here, as a concerned (albeit short term) citizen see it:

    1. He has a TON of signs
    2. He (with you) had a very successful ($$) fund raiser
    3. He voted for the TIF monumnts that cost us $64,000 to mark where the city plans to cost everybody money through TIF
    4. During the vote to legalize marijuana before the counsel, he said he “didn’t even know what that was”, insulting the intelligence of anybody who realizes the impact on the community
    5. He has been on the wrong side of tax increases
    6. His campaign emphasizes his long residency in the community, which (like Hubbard, only with more accomplishments than Cameron) as though it he loves the community more than the rest of us, which I also find insulting

The difference between you and the rest of the council is that you are always willing to swim upstream if needed and generally are a guardian of the tax dollars (TIF monument aside). You have my vote, but I am subbing Chuck Ebann for Ralph and scout leader Jim Tomasello for Cameron. May not make a difference, but it is the stand I can make.

As I’m sure you are aware, newspaper advertising is not an exact science.

When trying to cover an area size of Nunda Township there will always be some overflow into other townships.

For example, when distributing to Cary, there is no way for the NW Herald to differentiate between the Nunda Township residents and the Algonquin Township residents.
