Two IRS Reform Bills Sponsored by Peter Roskam Pass House

A press release from Congressman Peter Roskam:

Roskam IRS Reform Bills Unanimously Pass the House

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Peter Roskam (IL-06) released the following statement on the passage of his two bills, the Taxpayer Bill of Rights Act of 2013 and the Stop Playing on Citizens’ Cash Act (SPOCC), as part of the House’s Stop Government Abuse Week:

“From targeting individuals for their political or religious beliefs to wasting millions of taxpayer dollars, the IRS scandals tell a story of a bureaucracy out of control.

“In an era of big government, federal agencies like the IRS have grown larger, gained more power and have become unaccountable to the taxpayers they are supposed to serve.

“The House is forwarding a series of proactive and protective bills on the floor this week to reverse this course and stop government abuse.

“Today, two of my bills passed the House of Representatives: the first, the Taxpayer Bill of Rights Act of 2013, requires IRS employees to abide by 10 common-sense taxpayer rights, such as the right to privacy, to appeal and to pay no more than the correct amount of tax. In response to the IRS’s recent invasive and abusive actions, this bill protects against future wrongdoings and empowers Americans in their interactions with the IRS.

“The IRS also wasted taxpayer dollars on lavish conferences and Star Trek spoof videos.

“Today, the House put real reforms and checks in place to restore accountability to a federal agency gone wild.

“By taking steps to reverse the tide of big government, we are putting the power back in the hands of the American people.”
