Petition in Support of City in District 155 South School Bleacher Dispute

Kim Maselbas has started at online petition to Mayor Aaron Shepley and the Crystal Lake City Council concerning the tall grandstand that High School District 155 has almost completed on the Amberwood Drive side of its property.

Here is her Petition’s Background:

“The city of Crystal Lake is taking a stand for us, the taxpayers. The city is saying that school district 155 must comply with city zoning & building ordinances and apply for permits from the city just like every other homeowner & business owner. This needs to be done before a structure is built. This is a planning stage step that nobody should ignore. The district is blatantly ignoring this. Please support our city!”

This is the petition itself:

“We, the undersigned fully support our Mayor, council members and the city of Crystal Lake to assert their rights over enforcing D155 to comply with building/zoning ordinances.”

  1. This is getting out of hand. The district needs to obey the rules, sure, but building codes really exist so that structures created are not going to fall over like those that were created on play-doh foundations in Haiti. Are we really naive enough to believe that a school district would not know how to construct grandstands or hire an appropriate contractor? Really, is this really an issue of following the rules? Or is this an issue of people not being content with grand stands going up that were higher than the old ones? If so, why is this an issue? District policy maintains that all structures at all the high schools must be equal or at least as close to equal as possible so one school is not getting a better shake than the other. So, you knew you were going to live by a school to begin with, what’s the big deal? You signed up knowing that the facilities would have to be equal. If you didn’t know this, sorry honey, ignorance is not a defense. Just because you were speeding and didn’t know it means you still get a ticket.

Really, though, is this an issue of concerned citizens cared about the welfare of children OR is this an issue of concerned citizens only thinking about themselves? What is it that we are trying to resolve here? Why don’t we just think of THE KIDS and get this done so they can go to their football games with their brand new stadium grand stands instead of being the laughing stock of the county because our grandstands will not be complete for the start of the 2013 season. I know that when I played at South, I wanted as many people in the stands screaming their hearts out for me. You all are the fun police and I’m sorry to be blunt, but those who are opposed to the bleachers sound like grumpy old men screaming at kids to get off their lawn. Is this a big thing or a little thing people? I don’t see you all who are signing this petition rioting in the streets about the pension system being underfunded or the state being, yet again, over budget for the fiscal year. Not one single person on this blog has taken issue to those things to the point of starting a petition and have Cal post it, yet this – THIS – bleacher story is the straw that breaks the camel’s back for political organizing or organizing in general. THIS is what you people care about? THIS is your biggest issue?! This starts the petitions? Jeez.

  2. I do not believe that the school district, or ANY school district, needs local building permits for any construction; they have to get approval from the regional superintendant’s office. This is ONLY, and I stress ONLY, a property value arguement; money is the tail wagging the dog here, nothing else. I feel for the people who live behind the new bleachers, but no one forced you to build a house, or buy one already there, next to a school; same goes for an airport and plane noise, or US30 drag strip (drag racing capital of Chicagoland) and engine noise. I understand it, just don’t agree with it.

  3. @Sum Ting Wong: That is the most adult thing said in this entire ridiculous saga. The “NIMBY Fun Police” is something you will eventually join when you get older, though, so be careful where you decide to put down your roots.
