Crystal Lake Attorney Curt Rehberg Accused of Making Off with $1.2 Million

At least seven folks who climbed the stairs to Crystal Lake lawyer Curt Rehberg’s office on East Crystal Lake Avenue have reason to regret it.

In a criminal complaint filed today in McHenry County, eight individuals (one a husband and wife) are listed as having lost from $731 to $524,837.

The victims of Rehberg’s apparent misappropriation of their money and the amount missing follow:

  • Ronald Kalemba – $524,836.94
  • Martin Ochwat – $468,475.99
  • David & Sandra Hanson – $157,480.85
  • Joy Hoffmann – $64,126.39
  • Edward Elmer – $12,419.52
  • Charles Hutchison – $1.673.92
  • Nancy Sword $730.75

Based on a complaint from the Illinois Attorney and Disciplinary Commission, details of the Ochwat and Hanson situations were reported by McHenry County Blog over a week ago on September 19th.

The next court date for the above subject case will be October 15 at 9 am in Room 302, Judge Gordon Graham’s courtroom.

Crystal Lake – Subject Arrested for Multiple Counts of Theft

On August 28th, 2013, the Crystal Lake Police Department initiated an investigation into an allegation that a Crystal Lake Attorney had obtained unauthorized control over several thousand dollars belonging to a client.

Since that time, an additional six (6) reports have been received from former clients indicating similar circumstances, in that, while acting as their Attorney; Curt Rehberg* (49) of Cary, IL had been granted access to funds destined for disbursement, following the passing of a family member.

In all, over 1.2 million dollars that had been collected by Mr. Rehberg from clients has not been disbursed in accordance to the agreements or expectations of those clients upon requests.

An arrest warrant was obtained, and on Friday, September 27th, 2013 at 7:30 PM, Curt Rehberg was arrested at his home without incident.

Transported to Crystal Lake Police Headquarters, Mr. Rehberg was processed and served with seven counts of theft as follows;

  • 3 counts – Theft over $100,000 720ILCS5.0/16-1(b)(6.2) Class 1 felonies
  • 2 counts – Theft over $10,000 720ILCS5.0/16-1(b)(5) Class 2 felonies
  • 2 counts – Theft over $500 720ILCS5.0/16-1(b)(4) Class 3 felonies

Bond for these offenses was set at $100,000. Mr. Rehberg posted $10,000 cash, (10%) and was released pending a court appearance at the McHenry County Courthouse.
