The Chicago Tribune article about Archer Daniels Midland’s attempt to get a subsidy in the range of $20 million.  Note that Mike Madigan’s reapportionment hearing lawyer, Mike Kasper, has been hired to help make the pitch.

Compare that to the headline in the Chicago Tribune: “ADM details bid for tax breaks.”

Tell me, if you can, how moving 100 jobs from Decatur to the Chicago area (plus another hundred on the come) is worth $20 or million over fifteen to twenty years.

The Sun-Times article says that State Rep. Barbara Flynn Currie, House Speaker Mike Madigan’s frequent dinner companion, used the term “blackmail” in describing the attempt to pry tax breaks from the state.

State Rep. David McSweeney “said he would oppose further tax subsidies to individual companies in favor of across-the-board cuts in corporate tax rates,” according to the Sun-Times.

Archer-Daniels-Midland and other ethanol producers were already been given about a billion subsidy (which no one at the Illinois Revenue Department can find the details of) during the early years of Rod Blagojevich.

Illinois gave about a $70 million subsidy to entice Boeing to move its headquarters to Chicago.

Others with subsidies like ADM is seeking–income tax breaks–include Motorola Mobility, Sears, Navistar and Ford Motor Company, according to the Chicago Tribune article.
